In that case upgrade to a Xr.
The Xr is a downgrade from the 8 Plus in too many ways.

Im pretty old and very wise---been new iphone owner every year since 2007But that's shallow and you'll soon grow out of that when you're a little older and wiser, then you'll realise the real prices.
The Xr is a downgrade from the 8 Plus in too many ways.
I think Apple has seriously misjudged their price elasticity of demand. £100 cheaper and I think they would fly off the shelves.
Your missing an incredible point and that point is that Samsung allows expanded memory so realistic the 64gb would be 256gb if you had expanded memory. And you also leaving out you can get bogos on Samsung phones. And please don’t go the route of Apple is better or premium that’s why no bogos
It does however have the newest design, silicon (A12 Bionic), and wide-angle camera. In retrospect it compares best to the regular 8 in features and its position in the lineup.
iPhone 8 -> iPhone Xr
iPhone 8 Plus -> iPhone Xs
iPhone Xs Max is a new size/price category.
The design is less important to me than ppi, and I’ve gotten used to 3D Touch and the dual cameras at this point. Still not sure which way I’m going to go on this.
It's not just "a phone". It's a pocketable super computer.
again, 1,100$ for a phone (basic configuration...). For a device that in 2 years will be slow and unusable...
The video quality between the 8 and 8 Plus is noticeable. I’ve personally tried tested them. This is a deal breaker for me and the XrI thought the Xr would be $700, but the upgraded memory would be $800. Now I find out it's $750, with an upgrade of memory price of... $800. That's fine by me lol. Coming from an iPhone 6S+, seems like an upgrade in every way. All this talk about PPi and 720P vs 1080P on small screens seem insane to me, but I'll be waiting till people who actually know what they are talking about (some of the reviewers, with actual units doing a side by side comparison) get their hands on them before I decide what I'll actually buy.
I’ve been saying this for a few years now when the price issue comes up. For most people the smartphone is their primary and likely most used computer. And the bit about being slow and unusable in 2 years is nonsense. The current 2 year old iPhone feels brand new still on iOS 12. And I have many family members who are currently using 4 year old iPhones 6 and are quite happy.
Does it suck that the top of the line iPhone has slowly raised in price? Sure does. But it’s improved significantly over the years as well. And they do have models that aren’t $1100.
Not happy with the price? Don’t buy it.
Yes these devices really are social media devices. When I got rid of my social media accounts earlier this year I also realized I don't need my phone much, and downgraded to an SE. It's proven to be a great decision for me personally, but I'm left without an upgrade path with Apple. I hope they maintain the SE for some time to come.
All due respect, that's simply not true. I work in IT and this phone is my lifeline for my career. I can remote to any PC/server in the entire organization, check email, run scripts, fix issues of nearly any sort, etc. If I get a call from one of our automated notifications at 3am because a server went down, I don't even have to get out of bed anymore to get another device. I can answer the call, log in to the server, fix the problem, email/text/call anyone else involved, and all of this can be done on the same device.
Yes, the cost is almost ridiculous... but this device is a massive convenience for me and it's definitely not for Social Media.
Sounds like the iPhone Xs might be your best option if you decide to upgrade.
I'd go with the 8 as an upgrade to the SE. It really isn't that much bigger.
Again, it may be for me too, but I need to see them side by side before I can make that call. The video quality between the 8 and 8 Plus is noticeable. I’ve personally tried tested them. This is a deal breaker for me and the Xr
