But for AT&T to say they must manually do this, is a load of dung. Not only do they not care about what their high paying customers want, they'll also lie to us to.
Yes, I can prove they do not need to individually do this. Proof?...

Further proof was that we were successful receiving & sending MMS during the early betas of 3.0. If they really have to do a software/hardware upgrade to "enable" MMS, how were we able to do it before?

Tethering is working quite well after an initial hiccup. When I first tried to connect it failed with a network device error. The internet tethering section in the settings also disappeared. I reapplied the 5.0 ipcc and now tethering works (I'm posting this through my tethered connection).

I don't expect to get MMS working, but I'll still try for a little while. :)

You'll need to do the following for MMS to work:

4. Call AT&T Tier Two Technical Support at 888-892-9760 press option 1

5. When talking to representative explain that you are a registered software developer for the iphone and need to have your phone activated for MMS.

These are the things they need to do to make it work

a. Make sure you are on a standard texting plan and not the iphone texting plan
b. Enable Media Net and WAP Push
c. There are two areas in Snooper that need to be checked off to enable MMS
d. They need to do a push OTA (over the air activation)

THIS IS THE KEY!!! JUST GOT BOTH OF MY PHONES WORKING, FINALLY!!!!

Hi all. First, this thread has been extremely helpful. I got MMS working on my iPhone. I followed what a few others discussed earlier.

I should note that I am on a family plan. I don't know if the standard iPhone text message plan will work.

First, I followed all the directions in terms of updating the carrier file. My settings have only the APN, mmsc, and mmsc proxy filled.

It wasn't working at first; I had the ability to take a picture in messages, but it wouldn't send. I removed the sim card from my iPhone and my mother's crapPhone and put my sim card in the crapPhone. After turning it on and off a couple times, I was able to access MEdia net and send an MMS. I then replaced the sim cards, and it was working on my iPhone.

So, if you are on a family plan and have another phone lying around, I am fairly confident this will work.

I think the Family Messaging feature helps a lot with getting MMS to work.

THIS IS THE KEY!!! JUST GOT BOTH OF MY PHONES WORKING, FINALLY!!!!

I just got royally shot down by the AT&T rep for asking about snooper.

She said, "Despite what you may have read on Macrumors' forums, we aren't able to check off those two options anymore, I'm sorry"

I called att and they said they cant enable wap/push anymore. she said it was against there policy and can only enable it on the release date. :( I explained i was trying to test an app out but still no luck. I guess this is the only option that needs to be changed to make it work.

TheRiseofTheFal - are you jailbroken too? I only ask because your screenshot has iPhone where it normally has the carrier name

I'm actually not jailbroken, I jailbroke my original iphone 2G and I changed the carrier symbol, i didn't like the jailbreak and restored my software but the carrier symbol stayed changed...Once I upgraded to the 3G last august it carried over within the backup to the new phone...kind of funky I know, but otherwise it's a clean iphone 3G albeit with 3.0 firmware :)

I finally got the option to send mms on my 3.0GM

i tried the settings mentioned above no dice

i called at&t with my sim in another phone and supposedly got mms working and i could send and recv mms while my sim was in other phone

put it back into iPhone, try to send mms status bar gets almost to complete then errors out

sent mms to my iphone from a verizon phone mms gets lost in never never land, mo more "you have received a MMS go to this website..." messages like i used to get but no mms recvd either

everyone just give up ATT has given us all the F Off button in their system - sucks, but it is what it is and I am tired of trying to get around something that we all know is possible. I would bet that if Iphone was available on VZW - there would be a boat load of ports :)

I just tried chatting with AT&T online and I told her I was a registered iPhone developer and I needed MMS provisioned on my iPhone. She said Ok, can I have your Developer ID and information? I flipped and just closed the chat. I didn't know what that was so, unfortunately, I still cannot send MMS, but I was able to get tethering to work over bluetooth. Guess I'll have to wait until they "officially" allow MMS.

It worked on mine by doing that, for like an hour. The AT&T detected the phone was an iPhone and turned it off.

Same here! Why are they doing this? I don't even understand the point of them fighting it.

They aren't fighting it, its automated. Your phone registers as the non iPhone device the when you use it, but once you start using the iPhone again, it registers with AT&T as an iPhone, and is automatically disabled.

well why don't they turn off that process, the whole thing is absurd.

i dot understand why people are all up in arms about this. they are going to enable MMS eventually so if you can get it to work right now, thats ok. BUt getting tethering to work is the big thing since if they do activate it, it will cost money!.

Once I get my iphone if I can get tethering enabled I plan to cancel my actual internet service and just tether if I need to you my computer. I dont use the internet that much or download alot of stuff so that shoudnt be a problem and will save me about $40 a months. The only real question is, can I tether the iphone to my xbox and still have enough speed to play halo without lots of lag

Anyone know? Anyone tried playing a video game on their xbox while tethered??

OK so my Visual Voicemail is broken now. I missed a few calls over the last 3 days and thought they didn't leave messages until someone asked me if I got their message. I call my voicemail (not using visual voicemail) and there are several new messages there!! How do I fix my visual voicemail? Worst part of this is that MMS options just disappeared and now VVM doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated. Also if you installed version 5 of the carrier file you may want to dial into your voicemail to see if you have any new messages since it seems that it breaks VVM.

Same thing happened to me when I did the MMS part... even though I changed the settings back, VVM didn't work. I had to restore my phone to get it back. Works fine after that.

The Bundle Problem

If the .ipcc file is grayed out, try downloading from a different browser.

I used Safari and instead of downloading in the .ipcc format the carrier file downloaded in a .bundle format. Changing the extension in 'Get Info' does not work, however, when I used Firefox to download the same file, it appeared as a .ipcc and I was able to select it when updating my carrier file.

The Visual Voicemail Problem

If your voicemail is broken after attempting the MMS and Tethering change, I found a forum that suggested using acds.voicemail in the place of wap.cingular. It worked for me, right after I typed it in the three voice-mails I had attempted to send earlier chimed.

Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network>Visual Voicemail (Not a button, one of the sections on the page)

Visual Voicemail
APN: acds.voicemail

Leave everything else in this section blank.

My Success

I was able to send and receive pictures multiple times (though not from multiple carriers or people, sorry but it's four in the morning here) and I the reason for my success was the Gizmodo trick.

http://gizmodo.com/5202406/ https:/...att.com/ https://mymedianet.wireless.att.com/

I have the (unlimited) family messaging plan. I did not call AT&T, just followed the steps from Gizmodo. I used the fix in my post above to resurrect Visual Voicemail and had to use Firefox to download the carrier file. Hope this helps.
