There is NO way to justify the new iPad Pro if you have any of the new shape since the M1.

Let’s be totally clear - you don’t need the M4 - it’s an iPad and the M1 can do everything it does.

I’ve spent over £2000 on a Nano 1TB M4. Yes, it’s super thin. Yes, the new Magic Keyboard is much better. Maybe, just maybe you might find the OLED better. Maybe, you might prefer the nano display…

BUT unless Apple give us some mind blowing software change only available on the M4 then no one needs to upgrade. FACT.

DON’T try and justify the spending on a new IPad by listing the ‘improvements’

You all bought one because you want the latest, best iPad. That’s all.

Me too.

(the only exception to this is if you did not have an IPad pro before, then yes you can justify it if you wanted an iPad with the best specs).
Please don’t speak on my behalf. I use my iPad 8-12 hours a day and it’s been a real improvement for me.

I'm probably going to return my iPad Pro M4 11. I received it on Wednesday moved everything over and it is . .fine. I was coming from an M1 11 iPad and while I can tell a difference, it's probably not worth $1000.

Everything is faster but outside of a few apps, they were already fast enough. The only app that has me tempted to stay is Roon which I use extensively and it was always slow on my M1. It flies on the M4, a substantive improvement that is easily 5 to 8x faster. However, other things are faster (Safari, WSJ, NY Times, etc) but as I said they were already fast.

As far as the display goes it is nicer. Not 10x nicer but nicer.

I’ve just read white text on a black background via the kindle app, and blooming isn’t glaringly obvious at all. I’ve tried at the lowest possible brightness and at a reasonable brightness, and still completely legible with no “hey look at me I’m blooming”
Do you have a 12.9 m2? That is the only device that will bloom.

edit: this is blooming

How?

I’m sorry I don‘t believe you for one second. I am typing this on my nano 1TB 13 inch and it’s lovely but your talking nonsense…

I’m on the verge of returning my iPad Pro 13. Don’t get me wrong I like it, it’s lightweight, extremely portable and fast but the thing that lets it down for me is the OLED. It’s just looks too yellowish to me and that’s with True Tone turned off. Much prefer the mini led screen on my 12.9, even the screen on the M1 11 iPad Pro looks better to me.

I have a 12.9 M1 which was the device that started bloom-gate as it was the first to get mini-LED

And it looks nothing like that in real life, you've fallen foul of "looks much worse in a photo"
I stand corrected for the m1 12.9 being miniled.
but the blooming in the dark does look that bad IMHO.

You can set your own white point on an iPad, can’t you?
but I like the less blueish color of my display.

was just thinking this - I read my iPads in bed with the brightness all the way down and the "reduce white point" at 80 or even 90% - works great for crashing quickly.

You gotta be trolling, aren’t ya?:)

It was quite obvious (at least to me) that an OLED display won’t change anything. Just more oversaturated colors, flickering, probably burn out in 5-10 years perspective.

I have had multiple OLED devices and believe me I know what I am talking about, these are not game changers and never have been.

I still remember those posts on MacRumors forum where people asked Apple to add OLED because every Android phone already had it. They have added it, aaaaand? Nothing really changed. I can barely tell difference in iPhone 15 and iPhone SE displays except for the slight brightness increase and oversaturated colors in 15, and my eyes get tired faster

I’m not sure about this. Steve was pretty opinionated about Apple products an d did not change his mind based on popular opinion because he respected Apple’s fundamental vision for each device. And while he did seem to change his mind occasionally, (stylus is one I recall) he did not change his principles.

In the specific case of stylus the change was to acknowledge the stylus as an essential input device for tablets — but not on smartphones like Apple’s competitors.

It seems to me that macOS on iPad is one of those principled issues that I don’t see Steve or any Apple leader abandoning because it’s demanded by armchair product designers — most of whom haven’t tried using the iPad the way it is intended but instead complain that it should work like a Mac.

One example is the Files app — I have never encountered an issue getting something done in Files and I use a shared iCloud Documents config on my MBPro, iPad and iPhone so all my files are accessible from all devices. The key is to use the same app on each device. I honestly don’t see the issue. Now I’m sure someone will invent a contrived example that doesn’t apply to 99% of users but still insist that justifies putting macOS on the iPad. 🙄
Jobs was principled yes, but very smart people, while principled, aren’t afraid to change their mind when they discover new information. Case in point, the iPhone 5 was the last iPhone Jobs was involved with, and the first to have a bigger screen. Hence, he was already beginning to change his mind about something he had been outspoken about. I have no doubt that Jobs would have eventually come around to the benefit of the even bigger displays we see now when he saw how they could benefit the customer.

Being willing to change your mind is a key part of the creative (and product development) process. Jobs knew that. If it turns out there’s a new product category or need for a new product line with combined macOS tablet / notebook, Greg Joswiak and has already stated they see them as two separate products, yes, but that they can’t rule out changing their minds.

I thought my M4 would compact trash like the Apple ad I saw. Very disappointed.
They gotta invite Greta for their next iPad ad, make her sort the trash and have a slogan in the midst of a video “Let us sort it out for you*”

Apologies, I meant my 10.5 :)
sorry for teasing! in fairness, i do get the spirit of your point! i don't mind the slower pixel refresh on my miniLED macbook pro compared to the OLED iphone - i can still tell its different, but that particular difference doesn't impede the product for me. i'm sure for others it definitely could though. i've been spoiled by 120hz in general as well as any sort of local dimming, so its hard for me to go back to 60hz or lcd backlights on any new purchases.

These iPads are a luxury item, most people should not be buying them in these fiscally tough times. You should only buy them if you are well off financially. I got mine today, pretty happy with it so far. Gave the M1 to my wife.

I guess cause Apple isn’t telling you it’s a good idea you hate the idea. But if Apple released it you’d be its number 1 fan?
THIS, right here. All the people bagging on me for wishing this powerhouse came with the ability to run MacOS will be praising Tim Cook's brilliance for revolutionizing mobile computing again like they'd been simping for it all along the moment he announced it.

I could see returning here and there but, with the ability for most to go to an Apple Store to experience the product in person before purchase, not to mention knowing specs ahead of time, it appears you continue to allow yourself to make bad decisions due to Apple fever.
How many MacBooks did you return?

I tried but it still looked the same. It’s a real shame it’s a nice device but when all colours have a yellowish hue to them and I’m looking at my monitor then the iPad and the colours look vastly different I just can’t trust it or use it for what I bought it for.
