Are you returning your Xs/Xs Max for the Xr?

Right…which is exactly why I’m not sure if I’ll end up keeping the XR. The improved battery life, upgraded SoC, and unique colorways are all intriguing selling points, and I honestly couldn’t care much less about the camera. He notched, lower-PPI display, although lending itself to overall better battery life and greater performace, may be the dealbreaker.

Typically I haven’t been in love with the displays of the 326-PPI devices I’ve owned (iPhone 5, iPhone 6, iPhone SE), but the 6.1” size and specific form factor are admittedly rather compelling.
For me, the XR would be absolutely perfect with a higher PPI screen and dual-lens camera. However, in that context, the XS Max would become completely superfluous to me (and probably a lot of other people too).

It's sad. Going forward there will likely be no such thing as a high end LCD iPhone. High end OLED is fine, but the price is hard to stomach.

Agreed. OLED is also apparently biologically incompatible with many users; let's hope the tech continues to improve both in function and in cost.

Personally I don't see a huge benefit of going from the 8 Plus to the XR. More of a cross-grade,

The 8 Plus has a better quality screen and dual-lens camera, and the SoC isn't much slower than the XR's. The XR does show more on-screen, but the screen is narrower with a lower ppi.
Battery life will be the big tipping point I think, along with the screen size and clarity. If it’s a battery beast many people will look past the lower ppi.

If you can see PWM flickering then of course you should get an LCD screen phone, and luckily Apple is offering a good one.

That being said, it’s really tacky to try and justify your decision to get an Xr by putting down OLED screens and then getting defensive when people point out the many benefits of OLED.

Love the looks and the features of the Xs Max! Not returning it!

iPhone XR uses a completely different strategy compared to iPhone 5c.

5c: Low-cost
XR: Mainstream

5c: Repackage last year's iPhone 5 (2012) using a cheap chassis and subtract $100 from the MSRP.

XR: Satisfy mainstream demands for a 6.1" phablet and include the newest SoC and camera sensor. Use the same premium aluminum chassis.

Xr - Xs is $749 - $999 or $250; Xr - Xs Max is $350 difference!

So after owning a Xs Max I have decided that I am going to return it and wait for the Xr.

The reasons why you might ask...

I can think of 5 great reasons.

1. Image persistence/retention
2. Blue shift
3. PWM sensitivity
4. Battery efficiency
5. Saving $

Just wondering who else is following suit?

I love my Max, i found 256GB very expensive and bought 64GB which filled within few hours of getting it. Hard time offloading pictures and videos still not sure how to remove them without losing them. I have 200GB iCloud storage about 150GB is filled. I have never used such a beautiful screen in my life, i watch lot of YouTube videos and i fill the screen and the small cutting of video doesn’t bothers me. But this 64GB storage is too small for me, probably with heavy heart i would return it. I am sad about it. I really wish apple had given us 128GB for $1099. This is the first phone from any company i liked so much. :(

And vice-versa.

Maybe I’m not looking closely enough, but I’m not seeing threads equivalent to ones like this where people are slagging on those who choose to stay with LCD screen phones. I’m not seeing equivalent behavior from the “other side”.

No one is “slagging” OLED. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out that there are benefits to both and that OLED isn’t necessarily the undisputed king of screens. You’re being a bit sensitive about the OLED thing I think.

HAPTIC TOUCH
Apple eliminated the 3D Touch feature in the iPhone XR and instead replaced it with a new haptic touch option, which the company says is similar to the haptic trackpad in the MacBook Pro.

3D Touch is available throughout the iOS 12 operating system and is often used to display additional information through a force press gesture. The same functionality is not available through haptic touch, but haptic touch does provide feedback when doing things like force pressing on the camera icon on the Lock screen of the iPhone XR.

Apple is rumored to be planning to eliminate 3D Touch in all future iPhones, and it could be replaced with the haptic touch option in the iPhone XR.

As discussed earlier, I think we already have haptic touch with existing phones. If you turn off 3D Touch on an existing iPhone, you get the 3D Touch features in iOS 12 with long press, along with haptic feedback. I suspect this is the same thing as what the XR will get, but they just decided to give it a specific name for XR marketing purposes.

Makes sense. Just wish they hadn't pushed the Xr ordering out so dang far. I wonder what that was all about?

Apparently it was manufacturing issues with the LCD display. It feels funny to be in the first wave this year. Last year the X came out later than the 8/8 plus and I had to wait.

Some believe it was to favour XS & Max sales, but I'm much more inclined to believe the analysts who say it was mainly due to yield issues with the XR's LCD new screen. It is different from all of Apple's previous LCD screens. It's the same 326 ppi, but it incorporates a new technology, CGS, which may have effected yields.

Back several months ago the analysts started warning us that the 6.1" LCD iPhone was going to get delayed due to supply issues, and it appears that's exactly what happened with the XR.

It’s different because it’s curved and does it have to bend over in the same way as the does at the bottom?

I get very nervous when I hear things like "manufacturing issues". It makes one question how tried and tested these displays will be and if there will be issues with them straight out of the gate, (which we all know NEVER happens with Apple). ;)

No guarantees. But I'm not worried. The wife is getting an XR order in on Oct. 19.

??? Uh, what?

I am going to order one on the 19th as well. I wonder how smoothly ordering will be, or if they will get backordered pretty quickly? I think all the color and storage options will help alleviate some of that.

Yeah, this is what I’m talking about. In this thread you’ve accused those who prefer the OLED iPhone screens of being spec chasers and painted them as sensitive. It’s obnoxious and unnecessary.

OLED phones are excellent. I wish I could use those devices. Some actually work fine for my eyes (Pixel 2, Oneplus devices) but since I always am on iOS it’s just the PWM settings Apple used on the iPhone X and again on the XS and XS Max. Until they change the frequency of those OLEDs I’ll have to continue using LCD. Whatever LCD device they offer which will be Xr this year.
