Depending on how successful Face ID is, Android OEMs will follow. There has already been talk of OEMs ditching the under glass FPS for a Face ID like one.

From the reports I read, the problem was uneven lighting from the display where the finger print would be under the screen and that was why both Samsung and Apple had to scrap those plans.
That makes sense...thanks!
[doublepost=1508956213][/doublepost]I could see that happening.....

But I could also see the opposite happening....
I imagine if Samsung can get it to work....while Apple couldn't. It would be a big PR win for them. I could see then pursuing it just for that reason.
Hopefully they can put the FPS under the display and make it round.

And if it remains on the back, let's hope it's no longer next to the camera...

Looks like right below the camera? Would still like ti a little lower to be honest and round!

This a leak of the Galxay A7

It looks that way. I wish it were a little lower and round to be honest. But it is a good start anyway!

I'm imagining it on my S8 right below the camera. It would be a great spot. For the S8 Plus, it could hopefully be a little lower.

Either way, definitely the right direction.

A successful "Face ID" doesn't phase me in terms of smartphone ownership since I use the Iris Scanner on the Note 8. Though I am kinda weary about possible health repercussions and would consider switching to the Note 8's facial scanner if it's beneficial.

What kind of health repercussions?

Not sure how important the round part is, but as you say, certainly it should be a bit lower. Not enough space between the camera and the sensor.

I'm worried about the S9.

I wonder if Samsung will look to the Iphone X and copy it in price, fragility and repair cost.

I hope they go completely the other way. A bit like the pixels in repairability especially.

Or develop the A series to be as good as the S series, but a little more utilitarian and practical.

I wont be buying another smartphone if it costs $600 to replace its glass back!

I find face unlock so much faster than IRIS. IRIS is probably more secure though?

It's faster since the Samsung face unlock seems to be garbage from security point of view. There have been cases of it being fooled by a photo, something FaceID doesn't fall in for. Their own homepage states "It is important to reiterate that facial recognition, while convenient, can be only used for opening your Galaxy S8 or S8+ and currently cannot be used to authenticate access to Samsung Pay or Secure Folder.". This to me says a lot about the current Samsung face recognition, and I'm currently using an S8+ as my daily driver.

Kind of pointing out the obvious here. Yes, their statement about the (in)security of facial recognition says a lot about the security of their facial recognition...

Research the "fooled by a photo" story. It's not what you think it is. It failed the vast majority of the time. And it requires someone getting access to a high res photo of you. It's not anything I'm worried about.

Face ID certainly looks more secure. I think it's the only one feature where the iPhone X leapfrogs the competition.

That’s gorgeous.

Are you still going to get a Pixel 2 or are you focusing on what Samsung is going to do next? I’m packing my Pixel back up next week and sending it back. I’m done with everything for awhile. I’ll visit to stay in touch with what’s going on, though.

Maybe this will allay some of the fear...just blindly believing Youtube videos is a recipe of being scammed.

I haven't made up my mind yet...not sure if I will get the Pixel 2 now.....Google customer service let me down.
Are you returning it over the over heating issue?

No, that was evident only once and another forum member gave a plausible explanation for it. I’m returning it over a combination of reasons, the final deal breaker being the defective camera—I presume mine is defective because the video recording quality was absolutely wretched on every setting and I even made sure the lens was clean. Photos taken by both cameras give too strong a yellow-green cast and reduced color accuracy overall in many lighting situations. That is the last straw since the camera was such a huge draw for me.

The pure Android experience is nice and I am definitely interested in revisiting it later this year or next year, but there were too many compromises in the overall experience courtesy of Google that made my husband and I decide it was not a good use of our money at the present time.

Over at Android Central one of the writers is claiming a witch hunt over the display. Honestly, I think those of us who actually have owned the phones are reacting out of legitimate concerns about customer service and quality control that go beyond anything to do with the displays. Mine is quite nice, in fact.

My husband’s 2XL display probably would not be acceptable to most people at that price point because the blue shift becomes more distracting the more you use it, not less so. You don’t realize how often you need to view a display not completely head on until you start to put a phone through its paces rather than just evaluating the display for a review or first impression.
