well, unfortunately NOTHING can run in the background, that was NOT the issue of the app makers, but apple's SDK terms.

I hope to see vidoes on there sometime....

the battery drain isnt TOO bad. I mean, MOST of the time, you will be listening in a car or at work right?? its not TOO hard to hard to keep chargers there

I agree, the fact it can't play music in the background is the fault of apple, not the developers; but purely from a user point of view this does (unfortunately) detract from the app's usefulness in the same way as AIM clients are not as useful until apple rolls out their new push notification service...

I don't think it's safe to assume everyone who uses this app will be using it just in their cars or at work, but even if they do, not everyone has got a charger in their car and not everyone works in an office where there are powerpoints and/or usb connections, but like i said in my first post, i don't mind the battery thing as much because it's a given that the battery will drain faster, you just have to accept that when you download and install a streaming app... ;)

Two things I've noticed with this app:

1. When launched, even after it scans my library, it causes my iMac to slow to a crawl, so doing anything is next to impossible...
2. For some reason it uses up about 500MB of hard drive space when active...

Once I shut down Simplify Media, I get my 500 MB of space back and I can actually use my iMac. Strange behavior... I never did get my iPhone to connect to my iMac's library (I was on the same WiFi network, do I need to be outside my network like the Teleport app I wonder?)

your right.. MOST people will not have a power joint in their work place.. but in your car.. i mean, if you KNOW you want to stream music and you dont already have a car charger, you should just get one.. car chargers are almost nessecary if you have an iphone.. or any phone for that matter..

but the work thing i can understand..

I DO wish some apps could run inthe background, but i totally understand why apple said it was not allowed.. there could be malicious apps or just a battery drain

I used it from the same network as my macbook pro, so the network is not an issue.. and my macbook is running just fine.

Probably want to start with the basic first. Is Sharing your media enabled in iTunes?

Bummer. Still no luck.

Still getting "Login Failed - Cannot connecto to Simplify Media server".

Anyone willing to give the friends feature a shot? Screename is the same.

Fair point; if you're using your car a lot and are into music a charger is certainly a must..

I agree with your wish for apps to run in the background; your last post brought up a very good point in that perhaps apple should consider allowing apps to somehow "piggyback" existing background tasks (like the music player), although i may be oversimplifying it, but it would be great if they could do something to help out apps like this as they're doing to help out AIM apps with push notification... Oh well, might as well sigh for the moon as my mum used to say.... ;)

my itunes is set up for sharing libraries, but i can't seem to connect. even the desktop app's been running for 15 minutes and still shows 'scanning libraries...'
i only have 60gb worth of music, why's it taking so long?

If it helps, I've only got about 25gb of music and mine took about 10 minutes to fully scan my library...

My only gripe with Simplify Media, and it's happened on the desktop version and the iPhone version, is that occasionally, a song will just stop and it will move on to the next stop. Or in the desktop version, it will bump me out of the shared music completely, forcing me to go back and pull down the remote list and everything again. Not sure what causes it, though, but it doesn't happen all the time.

Sounds like exactly what Pandora does to me.

pandora streams a radio program. This streams YOUR music that you may not be able to fit on your iphone.. so you have access to your ENTIRE library all thetiem

Is it legal to strip out DRM from your media? I take your point about you owning it, but i own DVD's and i'm sure i read somewhere it's technically illegal for me to strip out the region encoding from them...(?)

got mine baby!

I wonder how long till the 100,000 freebies are gone?

Me too! I just got in from work about an hour ago, was bored so I decided to check out MacRumors. I didn't expect to be able to score this for free this late in the day!

Now waiting to connect to libraries here

Update here:

It works! LOL Using my iPhone 1G on both wireless and Edge. Buffering on Edge is slow of course. Not sure if Edge would make my iPhone 1G the one to take and use in my car though. :( Maybe hearing from some experiences from 3G iPhone users may make me jump to the new iPhone...

Man, I with another poster here... they need to have a donation link for us that got the program for free! This could end up being the killer app for the iPhone and the App Store :) At $3.99 it is a steal as some have mentioned compared to what we have actually paid for some other apps.... :(

Now I just wish that ATT will rollout FREE wifi officially for us iPhone users. As much as I travel at times, I might just spring for paying for wifi time and save space on the iPhone and not worry about storage space issues on what music I bring along. Also I look forward to sharing my music with friends in my travels.

*totally* agree with you as far as we should have the right to do whatever the hell we want with our own legally bought copies (including making backups, which would naturally involve removing content or copy protection), just not sure of the actual legal status of it... :D

Just tried this myself. Changed SM settings to allow computer to sleep while connected, then i forced the computer to sleep; my phone couldn't connect with the desktop app...

i just tested this, and when i force the computer to sleep the phone won't connect .. but if i let the computer go to sleep on its own, the phone can connect.

not sure why this is happening, but that's how it is working for me with "allow computer to sleep while connected" enabled.
