I have the hissing when I record videos only. iPhone 7 Plus, JB.
Thanks, added two new options to the poll for people who may have the same scenario as you. Does the noise in your videos sound similar to either of mine?

Also, are you sure you can't hear anything when you take the case off you phone, and hold the back of the phone right on your ear?

My iPhone 7 Black has the "hissing" issue as well. You can hear it when holding the phone to your ear, but I have heat to hear it coming from the phone without holding it up to my ear.

Normally, I'd be fine with this, as it's not too noticable. However, I can hear a distinct static or buzzing sound that gets recorded in videos that aren't in loud environments. Interestingly, I can't hear the buzzing in the videos if I record with EarPods plugged in. Furthermore, the sound becomes much louder if I put my hand to cover the back camera and mic next to it. This leads me to believe that the mic is picking up the sound. See the videos below so you can get an idea what I'm talking about.

It would be good if anyone with the same issue or without the issue could comment. Because if everyone has this problem with video in a silent area, then I guess they'll have to recall the phones?
Yeah I got the hissing. iPhone 7

Hello everyone

I finally got my iPhone 7 plus on Thursday. While I love it the phone seems to be affected by hiss gate. I shoot a lot of video and the hissing can be heard in the recordings. I have included a few videos to get others opinions of how bad it is. Give the videos a listen (with headphones is better) and let me know what you think. I am considering taking the phone back because to me it seems pretty loud. It sounds like a digital kind of white noise....pretty awful to my ears.

Yes, Many customers facing this issue of hiss gate. Use your phone at Low power mode. I recommend to take a look at

I haven't got 7 yet...but if it's gonna be with all iphones, then that's a problem for me..because I usually film stuff and edit...having the hiss sound would be a problem if apple doesn't respond to it.

But guys, Rene Ritchie from iMore says this is all normal.
Its circuitry, Mac's do it too. If theres a lot of data process and your expecting it to be quiet then its just naive to be honest, pretty much all advanced computering has this "hiss" not disputing that it might be really bad (like the video OP provided) but for high data writing/reading thats constrained to its limits well this is expected.

My 15" MacBook Pro, the high spec one from Apple doesn't make any hissing. Nor does the desktop in my signature which is considered high end.

I've never had any electronics that hissed like this and I do have sensitive hearing, I could hear the hiss in the ops video very very easily.

I suggest you read this, but you must be deaf if you've never heard these within a PC - I hear it comes with old age. As I said some might be worse than others, if its unavoidable fair enough but high processes you should expect this and if you dont understand simple circuitry and signals then I'm afraid our discussion ends here.

Very audible, if you really want to go crazy play all three simultaneously with headphones on. Thought my Sennheiser's were going to fry or something, haha.

Pretty bad that it gets picked up in recordings. I record a fair amount of audio and video on my current iPhones. This would be very annoying.

My Late 2008 MacBook made a slight hissing sound under load and when scrolling that I remember and my Late 2013 rMBP is no different. Slightly quieter but I can still hear it over the fan at idle when scrolling on a webpage. Can't hear it on my MBA however. But I'm in a server room right now, has to be perfectly quiet to hear either of them. Minimal noise though the headphone jack too, but I've used lower end PCs that had a lot of interference in their headphone jacks when using the PC. Not so much with Macs.

Don't be ridiculous, firstly I'm 28. I've been building computers for over 10 years. My hearing is perfect and I take very good care of my hearing. I'm the sorta person that scores 100% on a FLAC vs MP3 320 test and have high quality heaphones, DACs and amps.

My computer does not make audible noise like described in that Wikipedia article. My laptop does not make noise like in that article either, even if I sit my ear on the keyboard while doing a CPU stress test.

And by the way, the iPhone 6S also did not make bloody hissing noises. This is the first time people are discussing this issue and when the problem is so loud that you can hear it on video recordings made on the device itself (like many many people have shown on YouTube including a reviewer I subscribe to) that is a problem.

There is a difference between electronics making sounds and it being audible by the user using the product. When things get so loud that you can hear it while using the product normally (e.g. not with a case open with your ear a CM from components) there is a problem.

Yes my 6S just got replaced due to a hiss. But that was due to the battery. i'm not disputing that the hiss is normal for extreme cases when you can hear it recording, however doing high CPU stuff lots of signals being sent to a destinationthen it is expected and you get it on PC's more so than mac's and mobiles but it is normal, if you don't comprehend in that then I give up I've given you a wiki link go educate yoself.

I don't need to be "educated" my company designs consumer electronics. And when you design something poorly or assemble it poorly you can have sound emitted by ceramic capacitors and other components.

The point I'm making is it's a design flaw for it to be so loud that users can hear the whining sounds in normal operation at normal ear to device distances.

These kinds of whines have never been audible to users before on any previous iPhone. It's a flaw, he should get it replaced by Apple and they are replacing them for this problem so they recognise it's a flaw.

Also some people are getting this sound so loud that they can hear it across the room while the phones are charging. Case in point:

Also iJustine can hear hers whining while she's on calls with other people. - Again big youtubers here having these issues so it's a wide spread problem. Also in that video I linked above she has both the iPhone 7 Plus in Jet Black and Gold, both do the whining and she says it's audible on both in many situations.

I never said consumer electronics never make sounds, I have always maintained that they should not be making sounds so loud that you can hear them during normal operation because that is not normal. Good engineers pick parts and distribute loads to processors through multiple phases to keep temperatures of components low to stop them vibrating and causing audible sounds, I know, we designed set top boxes where we did this kind of work, nothing more annoying than watching a movie and you can hear the box whining in the corner.

Make sure you distinguish between broad frequency white noise on video and click/buzz/pop-type noises on video.

I had two iPhone 7s that had both problems.

So if both you're iPhones had the click/buzz/pop, then it's safe to assume that exchanging mine or returning and rebuying won't help?

...I just got off the phone with apple support...they said they can either ship me a new phone or go into a store and do it that way...I am thinking I will just get them to ship it because I dont want to spend the time having to go through the hassle of tracking down another phone...
