I do think Apple need to make a smaller camera ion if it next year as they are reducing their market releasing it in one very large size.
I think this was as small as they could make it while packing in the features it has and giving it the expanded battery life. So I don't think we'll be seeing a smaller size ultra with the same features and battery life as the current model any time soon. If they do make a smaller size ultra next year, it'll probably have less features and less battery life than the larger ultra -- at which point maybe it's better to just brand it as the S9.

At least half of all Ultra buyers are not keen on its looks but are just coping with its size and looks because Apple hasn’t upgraded battery or SiP on the $399 AW since Series 6.

Apple is giving you two options:

A. Completely new Watch with tons of new features, premium materials, premium display, and 2x battery life. Only cons are size and aesthetics.

Or B. AW “Series 6.2”, aka Series 8, with next to no new features, no battery life improvements, no new SiP. Nothing exciting but size and aesthetics are much better than Ultra.
The Ultra is not that different internally from a AW8. It has the bigger battery and extra button but the SiP is the same and the screen is not much bigger than the 45mm AW7/8

While the ultra isn’t my thing, I’m a girl who has always, always worn oversize watches. My Guess watches are all men’s sized, chunky rose gold. All my Swatches are men’s or Pop. I wear them chunky and loose so they move.

I’m not alone in that preference.

Many people like big watches.

I like the Ultra. I don’t intend to buy one because I’m not a big watch person.
It seems like it’s geared to a ultra active lifestyle which is cool. I would guess you need a big watch for those activities. If you’re mountain climbing, diving etc but there’s no reason not to wear it casually or formal if you chose to. All of these types of devices are to be enjoyed as much as possible. Have fun. Think outside the box.

Who knew there were so many watch snobs?

I really like my ultra on my 177mm wrist. No larger than other watches I've owned. And yes, I would wear it in a suit.
I'm also going to wear mine when I want to look a bit fancier, which doesn't happen all that often. Basically, and I'm sure that there are others who can sympathize with me, but I was on the fence when I first saw and then got my Ultra, compared it meticulously to my Series 7 (gold stainless for me), thought that it wasn't as nice looking, but then started to have the look and feel grow on me, appreciating how the lighting makes the titanium finish look in different environments, all while starting to imagine if I could REALLY part with this watch, Apple's first BIG redesign since the original came out! My answer? Nope: this experience (which goes beyond just looks) is just TOO good to pass up! With this enthusiasm, I hope that Apple continue this line, making gradual revisions while keeping the core look, adding more color options (like gold and black, which we have now in stainless steel), and making the Ultra continue to live up to its name, outside of just its ability to keep up with more demanding activities!

I finally saw one in person today and I thought it looked even worse in person than in the pictures -but I am very happy people seem to like it as that bodes well for future versions perhaps without that large unwieldy growth on the side and a lot less orange.

When they first announced it, and when I saw it in video's, I was not a fan. Then I went to the Apple Store last night and tried it on in person and actually love how it looks in person, and how it felt on my wrist. I just placed my order for the Ultra with white ocean band. Sadly I have to wait till 11/2 but Im excited.

Here are some pics of your future Ultra, just to give you an idea of what to expect (although pictures don't do it justice):

The large Ultra doesn't surprise me. If you look at the general trend in watches, including high-end watches, it has been for larger and larger designs. Even Rolex upsized the classic submariner from the decades-old 40mm size to the new 41mm size.

The pandemonium in the Rolex fanboy community was a sight to behold. Folks losing their minds over a 1mm change. The Submariner was thought to be a "scared cow" in the Rolex universe so changing it even so slightly turned some people's world upside down. This crowd is known for arguing vehemently about pretty esoteric stuff, but I had to log off and go away when the Rolex Forums turned into an angry mosh pit.

It’s quite fascinating the amount of time “a select few” will invest in trying to convince others that a product placed out of their reach by self imposed physiological synapse, psychological barrier, or a more simple means like financial ideology, already has another product in niche, and so on, and digress over and over in such a passionate matter, of how their points are somehow “relevant” to the majority of people, when in fact, just moving on and not purchasing it would give them the best result. Mind boggling how many things can be juxtaposed to make a point relevant. From what I see, apple has had a huge success with it, and their pre market research is paying off. But, the amount of effort given to convince others that the watch is somehow a failed ugly product is truly fascinating. If it were me, I would just vote with my wallet and move on or at least offer another product in that category that is so much better I felt like letting others know why. Mosh pits over a 1mm. I have to read these! Lol😆👍😆

Beautifully stated

It is amazing how such a small handful of people need to bring such a huge amount of negativity to an overwhelmingly positive ownership response for a product like this.

And the more positive comments are posted in this forum about the Ultra, it seems the "select few" need to drive their negative points home harder.

I was skeptical about wanting to upgrade from the Series 7 and how this would look on my wrist. Like most everyone else, I'm finding this watch to be even better than I could possibly have imagined. The series 7 is a toy compared to the Ultra.

You appear to have a larger wrist than most people, the 44 sits nicely on your wrist in that photo . I’d still say the 49mm would be too big but your probably be able to wear it better than most , the max I can go to on my wrist is 41 wwhich is what my oyster perpetual is. I’ve tried a 44 on and it buries me
Sounds to me like you are just miffed that you have dainty wrists! All kidding aside…this isn’t a Rolex and is not intended to rival your oyster perpetual. The Ultra, IMO, is easily the best looking Apple Watch available, but that’s subjective. It’s perfectly fine for you to not like the aesthetics of the Ultra, but your take on large watches sucks IMO.

I'm astonished that people actually think the Ultra looks good. But that's just my opinion ... lol. Massive bezels, a plastic ring around the display, an orange button, a sandblasted finish that cannot be repaired/restored if it gets scuffed or scratched ... hard pass. 🤮 🤣🤣🤣

You mean an AW6? They haven't upgraded the SIP in years.

I have small wrists and have worn a Rolex Sea Dweller for years, one of the biggest and heaviest mechanical watches there is. It is ostensibly a divers watch but I’m not a diver, I just really liked the look of it and still love it 40 years after I bought it. Some people insist on ranting why they don’t like what so many others do like. We don’t really care🤷‍♂️

I'm astonished at a lot of hairstyles, clothing and body modifications that people think look good too. But I just shake my head and move on, no need to go try to convince them that they're ugly or take a public poll to justify my opinion.

The only person an opinion matters to is the person holding the opinion. Nobody else cares.

I'm a female with small wrists, but I opted for the AWU with white ocean band. And, I am really loving it! Is it large? Yes. But, I like the look so it works for me. Definitely surprised at just how light it feels. My AW series 7 has been relegated to my drawer for now. It is nice to have it as an option though.

The bolded tells me that you clearly aren't the target demographic for the watch anyway.

Exactly. I’m from a generation where tattoos were something that sailors and criminals had, at least that’s what my dad taught me. 😊 I just can’t get that out of my head, and think tattoos are ghastly. On me. For me. What everyone else likes to do with their body is of course up to them.

I’m very happy with my new AWU. Is it the most beautiful thing in the world? Probably not, but remember, beauty lies in the eye of the beerholder. 🍺😊
