I thought about this for a while myself. Honestly, I'm my happy self when I'm wearing casual clothes and a sportier, perhaps bulkier watch.

I know there are technical rules about what size watch is "correct" and what would be appropriate in a formal or dressy occasion. Since I could only afford one watch, I was hesitant to get one watch that would "break the rules" in certain occasions.

But then I realized I should prioritize getting a watch that I am happy with most of the time, instead of focusing on what "works" in very limited situations (where I'm probably not happy with the rest of my clothes anyway). I've made my peace that I will annoy some people in some situations for breaking the rules.

That’s hideous.

1910 wants their watch back. Great grand dad is going to need it when he sends off to the Great War.
I actually like that watch for what it is. But comparing it to the ultra is sort of silly I think they're two wildly different watches for two very different purposes.

I don’t find it all that much different than any other smart watch design. Like the phones, a slab of glass. The size is not all that different than standard 44mm watches. Here’s a comparison to my 44mm Panerai and Sinn U1. If you can handle a standard 45mm watch, the Ultra will fit fine.

Nice collection. Which one of them is most accurate?

(rhetorical). :D

At least half of all Ultra buyers are not keen on its looks but are just coping with its size and looks because Apple hasn’t upgraded battery or SiP on the $399 AW since Series 6.

Apple is giving you two options:

A. Completely new Watch with tons of new features, premium materials, premium display, and 2x battery life. Only cons are size and aesthetics.

Or B. AW “Series 6.2”, aka Series 8, with next to no new features, no battery life improvements, no new SiP. Nothing exciting but size and aesthetics are much better than Ultra.

Either way, I’m sure Apple will give the $399 series 9 markedly better battery than 6-7-8 and a new SiP and then we’ll see how much Ultra owners really love their chunky thick-Watches.

The trade-in value for the Ultra in September 2023 will probably cover the costs of the new Series 9. So it’s just some $300-$400 lost and a year of Chungus McThiccums dragging at your arm.
I'm sure you can back that statement of "at least half" up with some figures right? You must have done an extensive market research to come up with such a claim. You wouldn't just say something right.

I'm not a fan of Panerai but you do justice to yours, it looks better than what's on their website.

The Ultra doesn't belong there, it's rectangular, an ugly little brick.

Not like a normal smartwatch either (I had a few).

I am genuinely puzzled by people buying Apple watches, they all seem horrid to me. Ugly design, bad user interface. I guess it's like Volvos, boring, ugly and crappy, but with enough fans out there.

In person, the Ultra is very nice. It would be wise to reserve judgment on this until you can check it out.

The band issue: Again, you need to try these (if you can).

I’d agree but Ive seen people wearing these monstrosities with suits on so yeah….that’s that theory out of the way
No it's not. That's like saying a Ferrari isn't a sports car because I once saw a bloke drive to work in one.

Any device, if you take good care of it, lasts more than 5 years.

Your "argument" is crap.
Don't be rude. You entirely missed the point of my so-called "argument," which is not crap -- in fact, it is indisputable (which is why I marked it rhetorical).

Apple itself states that people will need to replace the battery on the Apple Watch in three years (at an expense that may or may not be worth it). The OS support is limited to 5-7 years like most Apple devices. The hardware itself has electronic components which have a limited lifespan. These are not controversial statements. Either you did not understand the point of my so-called "argument" or you disagree with common knowledge. But, assuming both devices are well-maintained and not accidentally damaged, the Panerai will most likely outlive the Ultra by a magnitude of decades -- that is a fact and that was the point of the "argument."

I guess we are all different and like different things.
I personally like the Apple Watch and the Ultra really hit the spot for me.
As for interface I think it is ok, and after having a Garmin for running it felt like a breath of fresh air.😂
My wife likes her AW and as a non technical user the fact she is happy must mean the interface can’t be all bad.

As I say it’s all subjective and it is absolutely your right to dislike it.

Having looked at most peoples photos of their new watches, I’m happy you’re all liking them but I think the majority won’t. Wearing a 49mm watch in this day and age is ABSURD unless you’re in the SAS or completely ripped and your arms are massive. Right now I’m seeing these watches just overtaking peoples wrists to the point it is comical, sorry but I think they just look awful.
I understand that you need more screen real estate to swipe and have apps etc, but the concept of apps and other add ons all integrated into a watch to a watch purist like myself doesn’t sit right with me at all. It’s gimmicky as hell and that’s why I’ll always stick with Rolex or JLC for my watches as they actually know how to make a proper watch
Im not alone in this thought either, below is a picture of someone with a 45mm apple Watch and the top comment is “looks like you have an iPad mini on your wrist” which is a perfect description, and the new ultra is 4mm bigger ! 😆😆
Just ridiculous honestly and Apple should be really contemplating who makes their decisions because most people would never sign off on a watch that big.

Interesting! Going by your chart, the Ultra might just be custom made for me! My wrist measures 8 3/16 inches. Here‘s my 46mm Pilot watch…which I love! I’ve also got a 45mm S7 that fits fine (ie looks normal).

Very logical analysis! Why are you on Macrumors? 😊. Kidding. There’s a reason Apple didn’t focus much on the S8. They wanted to sell the Ultra this year! Then next year they can sell a ton of AW 9’s with the flat display and squared off body:)

Guy with tiny wrists complains that cool watches won't fit him and disses everybody else for wearing them. You should probably stick to a 38mm and leave others to wear what they're happy with.
It is quite fascinating the time people put into this thread trying to convince everyone to think the same. It’s quite obvious Apple hit a home run. There are a couple people that find it the Ultra mind boggling. It’s like they are in an Ultra disbelief. Well, Apple certainly hasn’t expended its choices and I am sure people will continue to find ghastly products. (How a watch could be ghastly is beyond me) The market will decide this one I am quite confident 👍🍺 Now that the watch won’t work for a couple people, maybe they will start a thread on what does work and why? Enlighten us, no haters lol. Different stroke’s different folks. There is always another year, then another, year after year lol!! 😆

Ultra owners. I should probably just try one on in person. I have small wrists, and the Apple Watch 7 fits, but it is a close fit to my wrist bump. Any Ultra owners with small wrists?

I like the flat display with lip but not the fat bulge, so for series 9 please Apple - 45mm size with flat sides and curved underside for comfort
