I wonder how in-depth they do with this. I mean, I wasn't born when TOS ran, but I'd love to see interviews from the crew filming Kirk/Uhura kiss scene outside of the nervousness Shatner and Nichols had already talked about, because you knew it took a huge set of proverbial balls for Roddenberry to do that and for Lucille to green light that, especially in the 60s when it was still taboo for couples to sleep in the same bed together. I mean, Loving v. Virginia wasn't decided at SCOTUS until a year to 18 months after that episode was shot!

BL.
I guess this is for all here. The Uhura/Kirk kiss was perhaps the first in the US. Britain beat us to the punch with anotehr show having both black and white actors kiss.

They beat us to a lot of things, amazingly enough.. I mean, they abolished slavery 58 years before us, so I could easily see them beating us to this as well.

However, that Jadzia Dax/Lenara Khan kiss in Rejoined (DS9, season 4, episode 6) broke just as many barriers as Kirk/Uhura. I mean, I don't know if it was that Berman and Piller wanted to one-up Roddenberry, or present that same issue with an updated twist, as interracial relations were more commonplace 28 years later.

Gonna hate me - check out L.A. Law 1991 which had a prime-time TV female/female kiss.

Hello, Suckas!!!! 😂

Seriously, though, I don't think I'd be a sysadmin/engineer to this day if it weren't for Gene, and by extension, Nichelle, LeVar, and Whoopi.

BL.
Brilliant; thanks for sharing.
And going even further into those Television Foundation interviews.. well, I knew that Lucille Ball took a gamble on Star Trek, especially with being as much of a pioneer as she was (she started the entire concept of IP, rights for IP, let alone the concept of reruns, and OMG, an entire business owned by a woman in the 1950s/1960s!), but you know it says a lot when Nichols had quit... to only be talked out of quitting and withdrawing her resignation by MLK.

BL.
And again, absolutely brilliant.

And remember, the original ST episode, The Cage, featured a female No 1 (played by the legendary Majel Barrett) which - as with a POC serving as an officer on the bridge - was thought to be too advanced for audiences at the time.

Thanks for the link; these are fascinating interviews.

Agreed.

I watched part 1 last night. It was ok. Some of the info I already knew. I didn't know about the funding situation early on and some of the Lucille Ball backstory nor did I know where the name Desilu came from.

Oddly, if I Google for center seat episodes, it lists 8 eps so far, eps 1 thru 6 "aired" on Nov 5th and the one that was on History Channel "Lucy Loves Trek" (E06?) being the ep that aired last night. Weird. It also points to a service Philo that I never heard of that I guess has those eps already?

Fascinating.

I already knew the story behind the naming of Desilu - that was old Hollywood history, - but had not known the extraordinary Lucille Ball backstory re Star Trek; that is absolutely fascinating.

I posted about ep 3 of Center Seat that focused on Phase II and TMP at https://www.tivocommunity.com/community/index.php?threads/the-center-seat-—-55-years-of-star-trek-all-episodes.585455/page-2#post-12435221. TMP production sounded like total chaos.

I enjoyed the ep as well as the following ep that focused on Star Trek II thru IV.

I guess will subscribe to History Vault for a bit to see the rest. I have a promo from Roku to get it for 99 cents/month for 2 months. That'll come in handy.

When does the last episode air? That’s when I’ll subscribe.

I already subscribe to History Vault and while there are ten episodes of this thing, Vault only has five listed. The one about Phase II, for example, isn't there and I only saw it on the regualr History Channel. But the Vault has episodes that haven't aired yet on History Channel, for example DS9 and Voyager episodes. I have no idea what the hell they are doing.

AFAIK, they're only airing 4 eps and they've aired all 4 on History Channel already.

I've watched all 4 currently listed at https://play.history.com/shows/the-center-seat-55-years-of-star-trek#episodes thanks to my TiVo recording them: Lucy Loves Trek, Saturday Morning Pinks (on TAS), Trekking Through the '70s - Phase II and The Motion Picture and finally, Trek Goes to the Movies.

I can't speak to what History Vault carries at the moment.

https://trekmovie.com/2021/11/05/re...un-docuseries-that-takes-star-trek-seriously/ says
The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek debuts on Friday, November 5 at 10 pm (ET/PT) on the History Channel. The first four episodes will air on the History Channel each Friday at 10 pm, with the six additional episodes only available on History Vault, the network’s subscription video service. You can subscribe directly to History Vault, or add it as an Amazon Channel. In both cases, there is a one-week free trial.

Currently, there is no information on how fans in Canada and internationally can watch The Center Seat, but we are trying to track that information down, so stay tuned for an update.

I finished watching all of The Center Seat. I enjoyed it. There was quite a bit I didn't know about (e.g. Les Moonves not liking Scott Bakula and the possibility they were going to replace him and the tension between Moonves and IIRC Rick Berman). The auditioning that Nana Visitor did was also amusing.

Unrelated: I did visit http://www.skirball.org/exhibitions/star-trek-exploring-new-worlds in LA recently. If you live in So Cal (I don't, it's an over 300 mile drive for me) and love Trek, I highly recommend going. From what I've read, this is the final stop for the exhibit and it ends in Feb 2022. Tix are free on Thursdays but for any day, you need to reserve ahead of time.

Really liked the Enterprise D filming model, the TOS captain's chair and console + a bunch of uniforms worn by various actors.

Well shoot (substitute stronger word), Star Trek: Discovery is no longer on Netflix and no idea when and where it will be available outside the US.

It's been a mess for those outside the US and Canada (not me).

https://treknews.net/2021/11/24/sta...4-international-deal-paramount-plus-pluto-tv/ and https://www.tomsguide.com/news/how-...us-and-netflix-release-date-and-time-and-more might help some...

There's also a hiatus coming soon that might be related: https://trekmovie.com/2021/12/23/st...hiatus-after-next-week-returning-in-february/.

I am currently finishing up on Enterprise season 1 again, and enjoying it. Some great characters, with a couple of uninteresting episodes here and there, but overall quite good stuff.

I enjoyed Enterprise, I felt it got a rough deal. The stories were generally good and I liked the cast and the combination of feeling it was futuristic but also very much had a frontier feel to it. I’ve watched all of it, along with all of TOS, TNG and DS9.

ENT should have gotten a season 5.

I haven't seen anything of Enterprise, as I know of. Probably have, but not all of it.
Will soon see if I remember any of it.
So I might have 4 seasons ahead of me of that one.

edit: after watching 2 eps of Enterprise, I think I pass watching this retro stuff now. Vague memory of some of the charachters.
But there's much more up to date interesting series to watch. I don't spend that much time watching series.

I really enjoy in particular Discovery these days, female Captain and all.
Some eps to catch up on, on both Discovery and Picard however. They are really good. 😁🪐💫

Started a rewatch of Star Trek Prodigy last night with the first episode. I think of all the Treks, Prodigy surprised me the most and it's returning this week. I hope it keeps up the momentum from episode 4. I will say Dal was kind of annoying at first, but I do think by that planet two part episode, they did tone him down.

Season 7 Episode 12 The Pegasus

Challenging the Treaty of Algeron and Starfleet using Cloaking Devices.

But here in "All Good Things" season finale the treaty must have expired when Riker comes out of cloak in the enterprise F
