Some folks are scared of change and learning new things outside of their comfort region.
You would hope, though, that someone whose job it is to help others learn new things (i.e. a teacher or instructor), would themselves be more open to learning themselves. If not, that's just hypocritical.

Ya think! :p

Seriously, there are many teachers out there who only profess what they believe in be it technology related or not. Unfortunate. But true.

The real question is, "How do you do anything with Windows?" ;)
True. :)

I have heard many PC users say that you can't do anything with a Mac other than graphics. And then go on to add, that now a PC can do as much as a Mac in that area.

Oh well. Just glad that I use both platforms and can make my own intelligent decision on what is best to use for the job at hand.

I got a full cover page in the yearbook this year because apparently, I'm that interesting. The inset talks about how I aspire to be a film editor one day, but in the meantime (?) use Final Cut Pro. Oh, and the photo shows me using "Final Cut Pro" on a Dell in the middle of one of the school lawns.

what were you actually using in the photo? A dell with video editting software or a mac with fcp?

Well, a junior, whom I know through family friends, was on Yearbook, and she pulled me out of class in November because she thought I was interesting enough to be on the page that featured students destined for great things, apparently. I told her that I wanted to be a film editor, and she needed some way to illustrate that in a photo. I obviously didn't have my video camera, and we agreed that I would be shown editing video on a computer, and she just grabbed her Dell and plopped it in front of me.

She also asked me if I had won anything, and I jokingly mentioned the school geography bee I won in fifth grade (we went to the same school, so she remembered), but that was severely embellished. In short, the writeup made me sound like a powerdork.

Welcome to the yearbook, where your stereotypes will be reinforced.

/rant (sorry)

Ah so the screen wasn't shown? I was worried they'd photoshop in a Mac FCP screenshot onto the Dell screen:D

I remember the first time I brought my macbook into work, my manager asked the usual ' so use macs?' (no this is just a custom made white laptop that happens to have a glowing apple logo on the back) ... followed by ' so do they do spreadsheets and stuff then?' ( no they just look purty.. and I just like to be different) I like the stuff , macs seem to be a great do'er of stuff

I do get so many queries on how you right click with one mouse button, they always walk off impressed when I just tap the trackpad with two fingers.

I also get annoyed with my father saying they won't play games... and have no software ... yet now he wants a second hand macbook.. hmmm . (mainly cause of his needing virus updates, then windows updates then needing to restart .. then not being able to get on the internet for ages every time he starts up his laptop. :p)

well put...

contrary to popular belief window PC's are not totally useless. Both macs and pc's are simply tools in a shed to accomplish specific tasks, sometimes macs are better suited for the job, sometimes pc's are better suited for the job...so to say one is superior to the other is simply foolish.

Yeah, if I wanted a computer that was really good at needing 50 security updates everyday then crashing and rebooting 10 times, I know I need a Windows PC on the job ;)

In my view Windows machines are a bit useless since they inherently lack the basic Unix-functionality. Last time I checked OS X 10.5 was fully UNIX & POSIX compliant on Intel machines, so in practice (not in theory) I can take any source from any other POSIX system and compile that provided I have the correct libraries.
That's the only thing that has swayed me from just making a custom PC with OpenSolaris in it and consider a Mac instead.

Aargh, I cant believe the arrogance of PC users LIVING IN THEIR LITTLE BUBBLES free of all other OSes! They must honestly be shot!

The Mac users are the ones in little bubbles...and it is a very nice, stable, cozy bubble.

As Homer Simpson once said, "They have the internet on computers now?!"

I actually would never want to see the day when macs are as popular as windows is right now. I like the exclusiveness and elite appeal of macs. If that would ever happen, I would have to move to linux.

We may be fewer but we are smarter.

Why wait...I've moved to linux already :D

Actually, I use my MBP for most of my Linux scripting. Not really in the realm of stupid questions, but the comment I usually hear from the Unix/Linux guys at work is how I can function with only one mouse button. Like the other Unixheads here my workstation has a three button mouse (middle button for pasting from the copy buffer if you don't know) that gets used alot. I missed it at first, but I've gotten used to switching to using copy/paste from the keyboard now.

At work, some dope brought in an infected laptop an plugged it into the network and gave everyone the nimda virus. Anyway, one of the IT guys starts coming around looking for the culprit. Says he has the IP address and wants to locate it. He walks over to my friends iBook and says, "Hey man can I take a look for a minute?" One second after moving the mouse I think he realized he wasn't in cansas anymore and said "Hey man, how do you get the IP address on this thing?" Unreal. He told him it was a Mac and this isn't the culprit. He showed him the IP address anyway. Of course it wasn't the one he was looking for.

All I could think was "These aren't the droids you're looking for. You can go about your business."

What a dope. I can't stand Windows IT guys that are blind to anything non-microsoft. I consider myself a "computer guy". I know windows, linux and os x. If you were an IT guy, wouldn't you want your hands in everything?

wow, thats quite sad. you have to seriously wonder whether every M$ IT guy actually knows what they are doing. im just generalising but from my experience they are so caught up in the PC only world that they refuse to learn anything else, including linux and all of that other stuff. yes, there are most likely really good admins who know the whole lot and stuff, but there is a group of people so caught up in M$ that its quite funny to watch them.

and your starwars reference, tops :).

Here are some stupid things that have been said to me:

Teacher on ThinkPad: So you can use my flash drive, but i'm scared i'll get a virus
Me: No, you won't
Teacher on ThinkPad: But don't mac's have like 140,000 viruses and windows none?
Me: (Staring for about 2 minutes) Don't Worry

---------------------------------

Technician: (Putting Mouse Over Dock) Wow! how did you do that on Vista!
Me: No, it's OS X Leopard
Technician: What's that, a version of vista?
Me: (Sigh)

---------------------------------

Teacher: What brand of laptop is that?
Me: It's a MacB....
Teacher: It's an Acer isn't it?
Me: No, It's a MacBook
Teacher: What company makes that? (with illuminated apple logo pointing towards her)

---------------------------------

IT Teacher: Oh My God! you just put a virus on the network!
Me: No, I Couldn't and Wouldn't have
IT Teacher: (Pointing to eMac) Then why is there little icons down the bottom of that screen?

*smacks forehead in disgust*

Please don't tell me that those are things that people actually said (especially the first one). :p

they are all 100% true, kind of explains why only one teacher in the entire school has a Mac, it's an iBook G3 Running 10.3!

"Who's the more foolish - the fool, or the fool who follows him?"
Attr: Obi Wan Kenobi - wise man! Cut in half - very sad.
