i do sunday job for an electircal retailer in the UK, called COMET. some of the people that come in to the store looking for an expensive PC (its in surrey which is jolly wealthy) are so inapt in terms of technology. i show them the iMac and so many keep on saying where is the computer after i say its an all in one??!"?!?

also they are sooo annoying because they all think windows is the best, well the rich ones do mainly because they get teased into thinking they have bought the best from lower class places like currys.

people for some reason just dont like change, not even somthing that strictly speaking isnt real, such as an OS.

People also don't like the thought they've made an error in what they've invested in. Ergo, all the references to 'Stockholm Syndrome'

Apple's best idea to killing this is Bootcamp.

i'm a full time linux user for about a year now, but just recently bought a PowerMac G3 B&W that i plan on restoring to like new condition. (i believe it may be a collectors item one day, plus it looks SO 90's!) anyway, i can sympathize with many of you as far as stupid things windows users say. alot of people do not even realize they have a choice as far as OS's go. i was selling an older Dell on craigslist that i had installed linux on, and made it very clear that it was not running windows. the lady that was going to buy it came over, and when i re-iterated that it didnt run windows, she said, "what's windows?" (she had been using xp) absolutely clueless.

When I first used a mac, it was a powerbook 12" G4 from school. It was EXTERMELY slow, like crazy slow (probably cripped by the school)... pretty much made me never wanna get a mac. Then.. vista comes around the corner and apple switched to intel. Now im a happy camper :D

Oh ya, I keep getting "Macs only have one mouse button" comments all the time. its annoying. I do a two finger click and they all go "wow!! my touchpad won't do that"

It's these stories that throw me for a loop. How could she (and a lot of other people who use XP) not know what Windows is? I mean, it just shows the logo and says "Windows XP" in big white letters on boot-up... Are these people blind? Has the thought ever crossed their mind "Hmm, I wonder what "Windows" means."?

Sigh...

Well at least they don't call it their "Internet Explorer". :Shudder:

@ayeying - Is it just me, or do you use your Air as your only computer?

It is. I only have 2 computers at my house. The MacBook Air you see in my sig. and a 24" iMac that is my dads. I never use the iMac unless I need to restore my mac (remote disk). So technically, the air is my primary system for everything.

Hard drive funny question

I was providing assistance at my old high school and one of the teachers there asked about downloading movie files for a presentation and he said to me:

"If I put loads of movies on the computer will it not make it really heavy?"

Classic!

Sorry, you work at Comet and think Currys is lower class. Come on both cater for the scutters of society. Now if you worked at John Lewis, then I could understand that.

Though to be fair, the last time I went to Comet I found the staff to be less in your face like Currys.

Here are some dumb questions/comments I've gotten:

Friend: I would get a Mac, but I can't afford the software.
Me: What do you mean?
Friend: Well, Macs don't have any free software for download, do they?
Me: ...

---

Friend: Does your Mac have the internet?
Me: Yeah, the whole thing, right on the hard drive.

---

Friend: How do I open a program I downloaded?
Me: What do you mean?
Friend: I downloaded a program, how do I get it to work? What program do I use to open it?
Me: Well, what kind of file is it?
Friend: It's a program.
Me: No, I mean, what are the last three letters of the name?
Friend: E-X-E
Me: That's a Windows executable file, it's not a Mac program but a Windows one.
Friend: OK. How do I open it?
Me: <smacks forehead>

---

Friend: Can a PC mouse work on a Mac?
Me: PC mouse? What's that?
Friend: You know, a mouse designed to work with PCs. Can they run on a Mac?
Me: .. Yeah... they can.

---

Friend: I don't want a Mac... I need a two button mouse.
Me: Macs have two button mice, and you can right-click really nicely using the trackpad on the laptops. The Mighty Mouse is a two-button mouse, basically.
Friend: Yeah, but I need a two button mouse.
Me: ... then just buy a friggin' two button mouse, and plug it into your Mac!
Friend: Yeah, but I don't want to buy another mouse.
Me: But didn't you buy the mouse you have now?
Friend: Well, yeah.
Me: Then use that one.
Friend: ... but I need a two button mouse.
Me: ???

---

Me: Why not get a Mac? You can get a cheap used one that's still really nice, and it'll do everything you need.
Friend: Is there any software for Macs?
Me: ...

I had almost the same conversation with a co-worker. I ended up turning around, looked to the sky and asked the man upstairs why he put stupid people on this planet. And of course I didn't get an answer.... but I had to ask anyways.

Not sure if this counts but someone in my school got a new Mac and they asked me today: "What special stuff can you do to my MacBook... uhh... G2 I think it is, to make it better?"

I kid you not, that is the exact quote.

I was helping my dad install Boot Camp on his Mac Mini at his office, and I forgot the restore disks, so I had to call my mom to find them in the house. She kept calling them "Mac oh-five-x" disks. It drove me crazy.

People who drone on and on about how Macs suck are as stupid as people who drone on and on about how Windows/other PC's suck.

No, because Windows really does suck.

We can find evidence that Macs dont suck, but people who say Macs do suck cant... Its because it dosent exist :D

OK, OK, what is this, the anti-Mac thread!

I do actually think the quality control thing is a real problem, I hope they sort it out. My MacBook has this weird thing there if I push on the plasic next to the trackpad it wont work, also if I push on the plastic next to the button it clicks! Only the right side, though, try it and see if it works on your MacBook, too!

Ummmmm,

is this a stupid question :(

Whats so great about Macs? Ive never had one, but the ppl I know who have one are sooooo happy with them. Once, this old guy on a train said he switched to Apple 10 years ago and has never looked back. Currently, I have some sort of HP (recent purcharse) and it works well enough.

Please be nice :p

Not verbatim but pretty much as it happened.

Colleague: "What anti-virus do you use?"
Me: "I don't have any but when I had a PC I used AVG Free and had no trouble with it."
Colleague: "You don't have a PC anymore? Really? I thought you loved computers?"
Me: "Yeah, I've still got a computer but I had a lot of problems. Now I've got a Mac."
Colleague: "A what?"
Me: "A Mac?"
Colleague: "A what?"
Me: "An Apple Mac. You know iPods and iTunes?"
Colleague: "Yeah..."
Me: "They're made by a company called Apple. They make computers too- have done for years."
Colleague: "Really? I didn't know that? I just... everyone... used Windows?"
Me: "They do pretty much."
Colleague: "So if this Mac stuff's so much better, why doesn't everyone use it?"
Me: "That's a very good question..."

That's not word for word but pretty much the gist of the conversation.
