I picked up a 32 gb unit today around noon. Decided I'd go over to my Best Buy store and play with one while waiting for my 3G one. LOL. Big mistake... I had to have it NOW!

Anyway, my comments are the same as almost everyone's, it amazing and better than I expected. One thing I haven't seen anyone post about yet thought is the Skype app. I use Skype on my main computer and loaded it up on the iPad.. Called my son without headphones and he was impressed.. He said he thought I was on my cellphone and really didn't notice any difference!

I'm on an "N" network at home so maybe that helps, but this was certainly an impressive test of the mic in the iPad.

Anyway, just thought I would share.. BTW, this is still the iPhone Skype app, and it looks like crap when full sized but suspect the new HD version will really look nice.

The UPS man showed up right before 5PM! I have it now, and it's gorgeous. I unboxed it like a madman.

(I can't start syncing and playing with it yet, though, because now it's time to dash off to my pals' Doctor Who season premiere viewing party...)

I don't see why some people are complaining about the keyboard. I'm typing this post on my iPad and I gotta say that keyboard is pretty sufficient for light typing. But that's just personal opinion I guess

Well it's an improvement over the keyboard on my iPhone. If you are a "touch typist" you'll find that technique doesn't work well on the iPad's (or iPhone for that matter) keyboard. For that kind of precision and speed you'll need a keyboard which I may opt for later, depending on how much typing I do. Now, on the flip side, it's sufficient for "hunt and peck" typists ;)

Yr Blues, kas23, DaveGee: thanks for the very kind replies!

petestein1, deconstruct60: Thanks for the informative explanation about the GoogleMaps issues.

anthonyjr: thanks for the info on way the demo apps might not be full resolution

This is one of the nerdiest things I've ever read.

Not Knocking... just saying.

My iPad 64 arrived in Gold Canyon, AZ (east edge of Phoenix) around 1:30pm MST. The driver stated that UPS had 50 trucks just in the Mesa area just delivering iPads today. They have until 7 pm local time to get the delivery accomplished per a contact person at UPS.

So hang in there!

BTW. I got two non-delivery for out of area notices the other day. I called UPS and stated they had made many Saturday deliveries to my address, so what gives? Obviously, they made the Saturday delivery.

Loving my iPad so far. I have an issue though that I feel could be serious.

Basically it seems that when i put the iPad up to light the end seal, aluminum and screen do not match up around the entire outer circumference of the device.

Anyone else have that issue? I can't tell if its a seal higher in some places, the aluminum casing uneven in some places or the screen uneven (doubting the latter). Something just looks weird though.

Also not sure if this is a manufacturing defect or it was due to me holding with one hand on the bezel and sort of opening up the space between the screen and the aluminum case, allowing the seal to move a bit.

Thoughts before i go crazy?

School & iPad

Anyone download eFram Research's Periodic Table?!

That application alone is incredible!

I'm still not convinced about the iPad just yet, may never will.

But its perfect for the Arts & Science students IF the applications get Made for it and 802.11N connections to school databases to download texts; even workbooks for those in Accounting Majors!

Yeah I say 1yr and the apps alone will possibly negate the need for the iPod Touch for development and with specific apps for iPad.

Just got the ipad at best buy. Thought they wouldn't have any but they did, plenty if you didn't reserve. Anyway, thought this wouldn't be useful but it's much easier breaking out the iPad then getting to my mbp which is my desktop pc. Apps look great from what I have seen. Even though it's not really targeted as a net book type device it's only a matter of time before it's jail broken and great productivity apps come out.

Overall very happy with my iPad. The keyboard is not as bad as made out, while I'm still pecking at it as I write this it isn't horrible. It's still a bit too small to expect a hardware type keyboard, especially placing both hands where you can type like on a hardware keyboard. Well this is my quick 2 cents, off to download apps.
:apple:

The acid test

I have over 2 hours playing with my new iPad, it's over my initial expectations.

My father in law (+70 years old) starts using a computer device for the first time in his live (he only saw our screens when we were using our computers).
He wants purchase a new one with 3G to access internet in his town. (now, I have a problem with my wife, due I need purchase it to him. )

Good work, apple.

Has anyone had problems when imputing on the keyboard? It seems like it craps out and the keyboard closes and when it you open it back up and hit backspace the characters get all funky.

Has anyone else experienced this?

San Diego UPS Deliveries anyone?

My tracking info still shows "ONTARIO, CA, US 04/03/2010 7:27 A.M. DEPARTURE SCAN" (about 120 miles from San Diego) as the last entry and I haven't seen anyone post from San Diego that they have received it yet...:eek:
FedEx delivered the dock and when I heard the dorrbell, my heart stopped... so the dock sits waiting on the table longing to meet its mate and here I am reading this forum trying to not spontaneously combust from anticipation/anxiety (slight hyperbole:))... so if you live in SD and you and UPS came through for you, please post!

Got mine a a little before 10 this morning even though there was supposedly no Saturday delivery in my area. Freakin love this thing.

I just got home and my iPad was waiting for me. It is syncing now. Beautiful external build quality; if it performs like it looks we have a winner.

I was at Best Buy checking out the iPad since I ordered a 3G. The Dragon voice recognition app worked great - even in a noisy store. I'm thinking it will eliminate the need for a keyboard at times.

I got my 16gb delivered in San Diego at about noon today and I just havent been able to put this down. Even though I pre ordered it at 5:30am sight unseen I was still kind of unsure how this was going to be. Now that it's in my hands it just all makes sense and it's got to be one of the best computing experiences. Call me crazy but Im going to be using my MacBook pro a heck of a lot less from here on out. The keyboard works awesome for me and I'm getting used to it to the point of not caring about not having a physical one. Funny thing is my very untechie parents were all over it just as much as I was and thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread. Needless to say I'm very happy with the iPad.

Someone may have mentioned this but I couldn't find it in the 30+ pages.

Obviously the iPad is stand alone. Yet, how can you use the thing if you are required to hook it up to iTunes to sync when you take it out of the box?

My boss just got his but his mac is at home.

I want one, but I only have a 12'' G4 powerbook with Tiger.

Even if I never intended to upload music or movies from iTunes and planned to buy everything for it directly through the iPad, I'd still have to hook it up when I got it home to activate it or something yea? Does Apple really expect me to borrow someone elses computer or buy a whole new one just to use their stand alone iPad product?

Maybe I can activate it at an Apple store?

Got mine around 11:30 this morning. I am currently toying his on the iPad and it is amazing. I love everything about this device so far and think that it will only get better with time. The UPS guy told me that they had about 150 palletes of iPad's for my area.

Hmm

Our local Best Buy received between 40 and 65 units of the three models: No accessories were available.

Three drawbacks with my 16g iPad: Weight, the glass and Safari (I won't bring up the drawbacks we all knew about - no usb and no camera the top two).

Why didn't Apple make the case plastic like the iPhone!?! The metal casing has to weigh nearly a pound. I actually like the plastic feel of my iPhone 3g over the 2g's metal case. I seriously don't understand Job's need to justify high prices high-cost components. The iPad isn't like a laptop where the screen might warp the bottom when you move it around.

The glass panel has a couple of spots along the edge that aren't sealed flat, like the bubbles you get when you put a protector on an iPhone. I can't imagine Apple'd replace it because I know they will consider that issue a minor cosmetic one.

Safari's lack of a bookmark bar is a serious issue. I mean, this a TOUCH based interface, yet no quick-link bookmarks to tap. I have to scroll through to surf. This is the second most serious issue with the iPad. In fact, this may be as serious an issue as the weight. A pound and a half gets pretty heavy after a while, and surfing becomes frustratingly slow.

Haven't played around with it much because I'd prefer to get a screen cover on and the Apple case when they get around to releasing them.

But I did download a few apps, the iBook among them, and reading the new book I bought is a delight. Snappy and crisp.

Feel your frustration, but Apple clearly notes iTunes and 'puter are required. I too was irritated mine didn't come on ready out of the box. Perhaps if they had made this for use with a complete OS X....

Too bad they didn't and too bad they don't make all iPhone/Pad apps usable on a laptop.

Safari for iPad has Bookmarks bar. It's there. However, it's hidden unless you tap that Google search text gadget as if you're going to do a search. Once you do that, whether you are in landscape or portrait, the full Bookmarks Bar will appear just like it does on the full blown Desktop/Laptop Safari. No worries there. Bookmark Bar away. Just remember, the bookmarks bar is hidden until you tap the search gadget .

Another thing also, is that some Facebook apps actually work when using the iPad Safari as opposed to the iPhone/Touch version. It won't help folks for Farmville. (There's already a port of Mafia Wars to iphone, though it's at iPhone resolutions, at this time.) However, if you like stuff like Castle Age, you're in luck. It works with only 1 little presentation oddity. When you do an action where it has to load the update from the server, when that little blue swirly wait symbol pops up, your iPad keyboard pops into view during it. Once the page updates, both the wait symbol and the keyboard go away. Doesn't effect the game at all, but it's just a presentation quirk.
