Ugh, i was typing out a post on my new iPad, but deleted the whole post after trying to delete just one line. Doh. so i'm typing on my laptop...
I got my iPad a couple hours ago in Shoreline WA (16GB model). The UPS lady seemed a bit frazzled -- after i signed for the package on their UPS package tracking device, she started to walk off with my package, leaving me with the UPS device! it was amusing.
So my impression is that the thing is AWSOME, altho it'll get a bit tiring to hold for long periods of time i think. Not a big deal to me.
I primarily bought the iPad as a PDF reader - I've got a Kindle DX also which i used for that purpose. i do NOT buy normal eBooks -- so i don't suspect i'll be doing much of that with the iPad either.
PDF is one of the listed formats that the iPad supports, but it wasn't clear how to get them onto the iPad, and once there how to read 'em. I suspect (not having read TFM) that if they're mailed as attachments, they can be opened that way. Maybe there's another way that i haven't discovered yet.
Well, i bought "GoodReader" for my PDF needs; seems pretty decent so far. the app allows organizing the PDF's into folders, something the Kindle DX doesn't - one of the reasons i'm ditching it. color for the PDFs doesn't hurt either, nor does faster screen refresh and a device thatnot so purpose-specific doesnt hurt either =)
The interface for uploading files to the iPad SUCKS. It has to be done directly in iTunes. It would be much better to have the iPad mount up as a device on the desktop, similar to what could be done w/ iPods way back (tho you didn't have access to the music in that way, IIRC...). The uploading of files is done per app, and none of the stock apps show up as being able to upload/download files. And since the uploading/downloading is done PER APP, i don't see how two apps could share the same document. So if i wanted to get a 2nd PDF reader, i'd have to re-upload PDF's to it as well, consuming more space. Definately sucky.
The iTunes interface for file management has an "add..." button for selecting files one at a time (which i used...painfully...for many PDFs), but you can also drag'n'drop a bunch of files thankfully. There's no file organization in this interface -- just a list (big, in my case) of files. Fortunately i picked an app that had some organizational capabilities (which are a bit...odd to work with, but do the job). If it hadn't, it'd be no better than the kindle in that regards.
