My usage pattern now (all done on the MacBook currently except where noted) and where I see it going in this scenario:

- quick email - iPad
- longer email - desktop
- Web surfing - mostly iPad
- youtube/online videos - mostly iPad
- managing iTunes - desktop
- MS Word - desktop
- video editing - desktop
- ripping/burning - desktop
- photo editing - desktop
- managing photo library - desktop
- viewing photos - iPad
- quick web-based work in emergencies - iPad? Can it do this? Or desktop
- serious work - currently done mostly on work laptop - still done mostly on work laptop

I'd sell the Kindle if I read a complete book on the iPad and find it a pleasant experience, else I'd keep it.

Overall goal is to streamline gadget inventory where possible, and to improve my experience in the majority of areas while suffering the minimum amount of new headaches/pain points.

Thoughts?

My first thought is: wait until the HP Slate or other Windows 7 based tablets are released. If usability is bearable - and I understand that it might given that that touch function on Windows 7 is much more advanced than in previous Windows iterations - you could replace your desktop with the slate for almost all of the functions you listed.

And for the millionth time, why pay more for something that does less???? Usually "something in the middle" has a middle cost with middle capabilities. This has a higher cost for middle capabilities? Only Apple can convince people this makes sense. :)

I don't look at it as what does more. I don't want something that is a Jack of all trades, master of none which is what a net book is. An iPad may do less than a net book but what it does it does a lot better. I have a MacBook and and an iMac and my iPad gets a lot more use than either of those now.
For someone that has a desktop computer and was thinking about a laptop I feel the iPad is a great alternative. Any heavy applications can run on the desktop and the light stuff on the iPad. Just my opinion.

Hah, the slate will be awful. Wait till you get your first tablet virus. I cant even imagine using some Windows apps that were not design for touch input on a tablet. Just imagine how Outlook would be with only touch input. No thanks.

When did this stop being the "First impressions" thread and start being the "same stupid argument that's been going on for months" thread?

Kudos to Apple

First morning with the iPad. No battery loss overnight despite being unplugged. Standing here typing at the kitchen counter while my tea steeps.

Sounds like Heaven! :)
I played with my iPad all day yesterday (well, all day after it was delivered in the afternoon). This thing is absolutely AMAZING and Apple, IMHO, is the only company able pull off such a magnificent device :D:apple:

I don't understand the argument for putting a full os on a tablet. Do you have a laptop? If you do then why would you want a tablet with a full os when the laptop is going to be better at just about everything over that tablet?
The only plausible reason I could see going with a win7 tablet is if you hooked it up to an external monitor/keyboard/mouse.

And thus the reason while all tablets before the iPad have been failures.

Sat outside this morning, drinking coffee, reading the news on my iPad. Just an awesome device.

I have no loyalty to operating systems and limited loyalty to brands - I have a minor bias toward companies that invent things, like Apple and HP, over companies that just assemble things, like Dell.

But I don't think a tablet, any tablet, can match a good desktop of the same era for things like video editing - just not the same amount of horsepower. In the event, the desktop arrives via UPS on Tuesday :)

Question for me is whether the iPad can replace the MacBook with more gain than pain - and then secondary questions are whether the iPad can replace the Kindle, and whether the desktop (hooked to TV via HDMI) can replace the Apple TV.

Given enough positive answers, I will come out of this with fewer gadgets, the possibility I'll actually make money on the transactions in net, and a more streamlined and pleasant experience.

I am resistant to adding the iPad to my stable of gadgets without removing at least one to make room - I can't justify them all. There's not enough time in the day to use them all enough :)

Some People Just Can't Think Outside The Box

You just don't get it do you? The iPad was never meant to be a replacement for the full functionality of a computer. It is a convenient way to do simple tasks like email, browsing, watching movies, etc.

Oh, and good look with anything from MS....the very epitome of a dying empire.

So last night I brought it to a party with around 15 people and
every one was blown away after they tried it. Again someone posted
"why would you pay more for less" If this was meant to function as a laptop that would be true. After using this at the party you soon realize this is a new type of device. Everyone wanted one. Best way to describe this is its a consumption device that you can keep with you all the time
consumption of the digital world: Movies, music, tv, internet books and magazines. When I am not at work hanging, around my house or coffee shop
this is what i will use my iPad for. If I have to work on movie editing or photoshop i would bring my laptop. I can guarantee the majority of people in this world are using their computers just for email, social networking and internet and this is the device for them. This will not replace the lap top or the desk top but what it does do for at least me is gives me a device that is light with long battery time that i can use for my casual use like bringing on vacation, surfing the web in the kitchen. reading a book on it in the coffee shop etc. I consider myself a geeky power user who drools over ram and faster processor speeds. Yet this device even in my world even as a power user will see a lot of use. Now for most people the power and functionality in their desktops and laptops is super overkill and for those people this device is what the world has been waiting for. Example: " son my computer stopped working " "two hours later message on my answering machine "I brought it to the apple store they told me i turned it off by accident" Do you think my mom will be upset that the ipad doesnt have USB or multitasking?

My iPad experience

Unfortunately, was super busy yesterday with commitments so this is about 24 hours late.

First, UPS - my tracking showed my iPad was in Richmond VA (I live in Roanoke about 3 hrs away). I was seriously thinking I wouldn't see it until Monday so starts syncing my iPhone with som new music. Completely missed the first call from the call-box at the front door of my building. Thankfully the UPS guy tried again and I ran out the door to see a big guy stand outside the door. He chuckled and said "it's Apple day!" that was at 8:40 am. I also have not had many nice things to say about UPS in the past, but the guy seemed really happy and proud to put something special in my hands.

Out of the box (I'm almost afraid to touch it) it's 98% charged and must be synced before use. Dumped 29 GB (bought the 32 GB) onto it from my MacBook Pro and that took a while.

First impressions- it feels heavier than I expected. Everybody else is right about responsiveness though... It's wicked fast! Still getting used to navigating and setting my prefs. I'm a little freaked just laying it down when I walk away. Wish my case had shipped at the same time and I'd be a little less paranoid.

Trying out some of the apps. Really like that you can "try out" books before you buy them. Got about 50 pages of a book before you have to pay for it.

Typed this entire post on the iPad so if there typos chalk it up to the learning curve.

To all those saying the iPad does everything most people use a computer for

PC: web page -> link to mp3/doc/pdf/... -> right click -> save as
iPad: ...

Or, you know, browse while chatting with an IM client.

Also, enjoy paying for apps that are free on a computer (if they are there at all, thanks to not having an alternative to using the app store) and not being able to play MKV/FLAC/OGG etc.

You don't want one that's cool. You save your money.

Just don't piss on other peoples chips. It's the same arguement everytime.

Some want it others don't. You don't have to get one.

Ok... I'm going to be lazy here and not read all 33 pages in this thread, but am I the only one that hates the way the documents are self contained in every App? For example... I have pdf presentations from work I would love to have on my iPad for quick view and the only way to open them is via Mail. So I have to email them to myself! That seems silly in my book. I asked the Apple sales guy at the store and he said that is the only way unless I have a mobile ME account and could open via iDisk. The iPad needs a better document management system IMHO. Other than that I love it.;)

What kill's me, is the people who think this iPad was SUPPOSE to replace your laptop or desktop. When clearly its been stated and reviewed that its not. Then come in here, and repeat the samething OVER & OVER again. No multi-tasking, No Flash, No camera-Video, etc.

Oh yea, I wrote this from the iPad:D;)

But for some people it could. I have an 8-core Mac Pro for heavy work. My laptop is my email, calendar, office device. I'm hoping the iPad does replace my laptop for 99% of what it does. I love it so far.

Also typed from my iPad. =)

EDIT: actually, the device I see the iPad killing is the MacBook Air. I used to want one, but they never gave it the new trackpad.

I do think multitasking and Flash are curious omissions. They wouldn't cause me not to buy an iPad, but given the opportunity, I would ask Apple designers pointed questions about those. They could have approached it another way. For example, if multitasking risks bogging the system down, add some utility layer that warns or won't allow you to exceed limits.

A camera does not seem like a natural fit for this device.

The MacBook Air was ill-conceived. It solved problems almost nobody had. It is cool for the sake of cool.

All I know is i have not even opened my laptop, since I synced my iPad. Personally I am beginning to wonder why should I own a $1200 computer to sync my iPad lol.

I am sure it's mostly because it's the new toy, but I definitely getting rid of my laptop and thinking about a cheaper desktop.

Well, it was a solution to problems NetBook users had too. Lightweight and portable. They just picked the wrong price point. (it shouldn't cost as much as a desktop.). It was the Cube sequel, essentially.

I gotta say and i don't care if i sound like a fanboy or not. That i am in AWE. I've never gotten bored of the iphone because its awesome to have something that size that can do some much. And now the ipad has me speechless too.

Say what you will about flash but its not a dealbreaker to me. I just love the damn thing and i am very impressed. From watching movies on netflix on the go thanks for a mifi to reading the NYT and the display is just beautiful. I'm sure that apple will make a new ipad next year. And i will buy that one as well. But i just love the ipad its great.

Exactly what I was thinking.

When did this stop being the "First impressions" thread and start being the "same stupid argument that's been going on for months" thread?

Yesterday I had so much fun reading about everyone's first experiences with their new iPads, and those waiting (impatiently) for the UPS drivers to arrive and noticed (enjoyed) it was so clear of those who want nothing more than to rain on someone's parade. Seems it was a brief reprieve. Sigh.

Same here, just speechless at this magical device.

i bet Macbook air will see a price drop and SSD option in both models. MBA is expensive because of the CPU inside them are like $300.

what is the possibility of MBA type system using the ARM? that way it might be cheap and yet full system with Key board and Mac OS X.

Prior to delivery yesterday I had read the statement (from several different people) that you had to "hold it" to understand what the iPad is all about. And now, after getting mine, I reiterate, if you haven't held it, go bash Apple some place else.....it wont work in this forum because you don't have a clue.

If Steve makes it I got it ..
