I gave my wife a 2017 MacBook Air 13" in perfect condition for Xmas, with Core i5-5350U, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB SSD. There are sometimes some pretty decent deals out there on Kijiji and eBay now, now that Apple Silicon is out, and scissor is back.
Before I wrapped up the gift I installed Monterey on it and configured her entire user account, and then charged it up. My wife scared me after opening her present though because she said the battery was dead when she received it... It turns out she NEVER rebooted her old MacBook, and so was just used to the machine waking from sleep when she opened the lid. She didn't realize she needed to press the power button to turn it on.
I guess that's a testament to the stability of macOS.
(Note: My 2017 MacBook 12" will actually boot up when you open the lid, but she wouldn't know that since she has never used that machine.)
BTW, she thinks this machine is blistering fast. That makes sense since that i5-5350U is 3X as fast as her old 2008 MacBook5,1 Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz, and it doesn't stutter with YouTube playback. I personally don't agree it's blistering fast of course, but nonetheless I do think it is very decent, more than enough for comfortable daily mainstream consumer use (which, along with the scissor keyboard, is why I bought this model). It's always amazing to note the differing performance perceptions with these machines with the general public.
Also, since she has iCloud, her 128 GB SSD is more than enough for her. She has direct access to her entire Photos library without needing much storage for it. I was contemplating swapping in an OEM Apple/Samsung 256 GB SSD as they are available for relatively cheap now, but I don't think I'll bother. The other option is a third party drive, but I don't want to deal with the potential inconsistent glitches and/or power consumption issues with those drives.
