I'm with you. The new shiny they show us will probably be awesome, but I was thinking, I can get this MBA for about half or a third of what that will cost. Plus I love my no fan Air.

Good luck tomorrow and hope you enjoy whatever you decide!
Sticking with this MBA - don't need anything new. The New Pros are decent but don't feel justified by the price.

Yesterday I picked up a 16gb/1tb 8-core MacBook Air M1 in SG. I am definitely interested to see if they refresh the MBA, but in the meantime I am extremely impressed with this thing! I sold my 16” MBP that was loaded. The 16” drove me insane when the fans would start spinning even doing basic tasks. The Air is definitely better than I anticipated!
That's the same config I have... Works perfectly for me...

Feel the exact same way! And isn’t it grand that we don’t have to wait—we can enjoy right now. :)

Soooo did you open it? How is it???

Just bought the base 8gb/256 gb SSD space grey Air at microcenter for $800. I’d been holding out for a 16gb/256 SSD refurb, but I could not turn down a new computer at this price. I’m replacing my 2013 11” air that I bought refurb for a similar price years ago. I just need the laptop for getting some distance from my home office. Also, I’m a professor, and Blackboard works poorly on my iPad. I still wish they would make a new 11”, but getting the M1 at this price is amazing. Let’s hope I get 9 years out of it like my last air!

You can't pass up that deal! This will be a BIG step up in performance. :)

Totally. And it was a 4 gb/ 128 gb ssd 11 inch too. Believe or not, 4gb ram was fine until the last two OS updates or so. I would have liked to wait for MagSafe on the next air, but otherwise, this is still a great computer for the money. I'm still surprised they are selling them that cheap. If you can live with the storage and ram it's a no brainer.

I've placed an BTO/CTO order for my MacBook Air M1 through Apple on 10/24 Sunday evening. Then 10/25 Monday morning MacOS Monterey was released.

It has not been shipped, but scheduled to be delivered between 10/27-10/29. Do you think my MacBook Air will come with MacOS Monterey preinstalled?

I know I can always update it on my own, but would prefer it already come preinstalled.

Highly unlikely it’ll have Monterey on it. If you want a fresh install then just wipe it when you get it.

I skipped all the bought/ordered/shipped stuff and just want to show off my new setup. Never thought I'd need a laptop again (I really don't) but hot damn is it nice to have.

I recently picked up a 2015 MBA11 on eBay because of this statement from the seller...

I had a feeling the seller did not know how to do an SMC reset on this laptop, based on the statement above, and because they could not power it on, they assumed the laptop was broke and sold it for parts instead... here's what the laptop looks like...

Two small dents on the back case cover is all I have on this laptop... not bad for a $100 Air :) After the SMC reset was performed the laptop is functional.

I've been wanting to replace my 2018 MBP 15" for a few months now, and waited until the 14" and 16" were released to see what they had to offer. Well their price is a bit too steep for me, even though the performance increase and features are very much an upgrade from my 2018, but I just couldn't justify it for the money.

So I looked at the MBA, read the reviews, and came to the conclusion that the MBA is more powerful, lighter, and quieter than my MBP, exactly what I want.

Ordered a 7c/16gb/512 model from Apple the middle of last week with a Nov 9-11 delivery date. It just shipped out this AM from China and scheduled to arrive Nov 3rd.

Apple gave me $870 for my MBP for trade-in, which is close to what I would get from selling on eBay, so I couldn't turn it down.

I'm very excited for it get here.

$100? That's a damn heist right there! I'm sure they put a BOLO on you! Did you tell the seller you got it working? Did they cry?

No they did not cry. I told them what was wrong with the laptop and how I was able to reset it and here's their response. I felt they took it in a very positive way and I actually look forward to seeing if they will have another for me to grab down the road... you never know...

I will now start setting up this laptop as my travel laptop and upgrade my storage drive to 512GB NVMe. That should be good enough for a travel laptop. ;) Currently on Apple's 250GB storage drive running Mac OS12 with no issues...

Edit: There was a Firmware Password set by the previous owner of this laptop but I was able to bypass this and everything is now working perfectly. :apple:

I just bought a new M1 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD. It is the 8-core GPU model. I am coming from a 2019 16" MacBook Pro and I can't even begin to describe how much smoother the MBA is in daily use. Unbelievable.
I haven't done any benchmarking beyond Cinebench, where my new MBA performs exactly the same as my old 16".

Hmmmm decisions decisions

FYI- The base MBA is at $879 at Microcenter, up from $800 last week. That's still cheaper than most other places, but not the killer deal it was.

I did something today that I thought I would not do. I picked up a brand-new M1 MBA with 8gb of RAM and a 256gb SSD. I had been waiting for the updated M2 MBA next year. But Costco was offering the base MBA for $799 - and I had a $166 credit. So I effectively got it for $633. That was too good to pass up.

I figure I'll have fun with it and learn whether I need more RAM. I'll wait a while before buying the M2 version. But assuming I pull the trigger next Christmas, I'll bet I could get $500 for my M1 version.

Oh, and by the way, I skipped Apple Care. That would utterly destroy the value proposition for this particular purchase - at least for me. Perhaps if the machine that replaces this one is more expensive, I'll go for Apple Care then.

Just got refurb Silver 16/512. Looks perfect, 2 battery cycles. Was thinking about the new Pros but for price/performance I think this was it. Most taxing thing I'll be doing with it is Lightroom.
That's exactly my setup (bought new), now is probably around 2-3 cycles too :) Enjoy your MBA I am enjoying mine :)

I gave my wife a 2017 MacBook Air 13" in perfect condition for Xmas, with Core i5-5350U, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB SSD. There are sometimes some pretty decent deals out there on Kijiji and eBay now, now that Apple Silicon is out, and scissor is back.

Before I wrapped up the gift I installed Monterey on it and configured her entire user account, and then charged it up. My wife scared me after opening her present though because she said the battery was dead when she received it... It turns out she NEVER rebooted her old MacBook, and so was just used to the machine waking from sleep when she opened the lid. She didn't realize she needed to press the power button to turn it on. I guess that's a testament to the stability of macOS. :) (Note: My 2017 MacBook 12" will actually boot up when you open the lid, but she wouldn't know that since she has never used that machine.)

BTW, she thinks this machine is blistering fast. That makes sense since that i5-5350U is 3X as fast as her old 2008 MacBook5,1 Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz, and it doesn't stutter with YouTube playback. I personally don't agree it's blistering fast of course, but nonetheless I do think it is very decent, more than enough for comfortable daily mainstream consumer use (which, along with the scissor keyboard, is why I bought this model). It's always amazing to note the differing performance perceptions with these machines with the general public.

Also, since she has iCloud, her 128 GB SSD is more than enough for her. She has direct access to her entire Photos library without needing much storage for it. I was contemplating swapping in an OEM Apple/Samsung 256 GB SSD as they are available for relatively cheap now, but I don't think I'll bother. The other option is a third party drive, but I don't want to deal with the potential inconsistent glitches and/or power consumption issues with those drives.
