I did the Apple iPhone trade-in and prepared it for shipping, carefully packed it up, and dropped it off at the local UPS hub.

Nearly a week later, I get a message saying they received the box, and it was EMPTY!!!

Someone in the UPS chain of command opened the box and removed it! Pissed? I was livid!!! Someone at UPS knew, probably by the address, that it was a trade-in, and likely in primo condition and could 'score' an iPhone. Part of the trade-in was I had to use 'their' carrier, and took a couple of pictures of the box just before I dropped it off. Luckily the drop-off receipt showed the true weight, and Apple apparently covered it under their shipment insurance(?).

But I was pissed. How can I prove that the iPhone was actually in the box? Wow... I hadn't thought of that... Take pictures, take videos, SAVE THAT RECEIPT, and pray as UPS preys on you? I was going to trade-in my Apple Watch, and decided against it and instead gave it to my brother who has wanted one for years. He's tickled and loves it, and at least some lowlife from UPS isn't fencing it, or wearing it right now.

Yikes...

How many people get new product empty boxes? If they can steal (borrow?) a trade-in, I'm sure there are some new that 'go missing'?

Doesn’t the receipt that you get from UPS when you do the drop off show the weight of the package? They definitely do for some recent Amazon returns I’ve done.

That would be your proof. Empty box weight vs the weight with iPhone when you dropped it off.

This is the first time I've preordered something from Apple, so forgive me if this is just expected behavior and I'm being neurotic.

When I ordered the computer about 2 minutes after preorders opened, I was given an arrival range of July 18-25. Last Thursday, at the same time that my order went to "Preparing to Ship," they charged my card and moved the dates to July 26-August 2. About an hour later, it showed as "Shipped," and my UPS My Choice shows the package with an estimated arrival of July 20. But Apple still shows the later dates, July 26-August 2.

Should I rely on the UPS data since the computer is in their hands now, or should I prepare myself for the longer wait Apple is suggesting?

Kinda depends on how UPS's service is where you live but I'd go with what UPS estimates + one workday.

This is exactly what happened with my order. Confirmation email at 7:02, Starlight 8-core, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. Original email said 7/20-7/22. Then when it changed to Preparing to Ship, the date said 7/22-7/26. I got the Shipped email from Apple which said 7/21. And UPS My Choice said delivery would be 7/18. UPS is currently showing "Out for Delivery" today. So I would say trust the UPS dates and ignore the Apple dates.

That sounds like good news to me. Thanks!

WOOOOWWWWW! That's messed up. From what I've seen in the building I live in, people get their computers delivered with no problem, but I was so scared of having an issue with them, it's an expensive item. I've never had an issue like that with UPS... However, USPS... That's another tragedy.

This is the scenario where am I always afraid for when doing the trade-in. I’d much rather go to the Apple store and do it there but usually when one wants the iPhone when it just gets released this is not an option. It worries me each and every time I do this. But it hasn’t happened to me.

I was told that trade-ins get higher value by not going to the store. *shrug*

I hope that's what's happened to mine. The UPS app says it's been in Louisville for over 30 hours, and cleared customs 23 hours ago. Hopefully they just missed a scan, though I also haven't been able to find any SDF-ATL flights that have operated in the past two days, which in and of itself is really strange, but might explain why it appears that the package hasn't moved.

Oh well, my MBP turned 13 on Friday, so I've waited this long and can surely wait another day or two...
It's weird, for sure. UPS told me that once a package gets into a container, for boat, plane, or truck, it becomes part of the whole. The 'cart' is scanned when it leaves, and all the packages scanned into it are updated. It arrives, the cart is scanned and again, all the packages are updated. That is supposedly why 'we' I see multiple scans of the item at a hub. However, yes, sometimes they 'miss' a package, or it will be misrouted, or 'forgotten' and end up going back in the same cart. It's a complicated process, and things go wrong likely all the time. Some hubs are worse than others. My wayward wandering box was a victim of the massive Chicago suburb hub. Stuff seems to go in there and sometimes it just shoots out late or to the wrong destination. Yippee...

Yes, like I said in the comment, I HAD the receipt. People that don't get one are trusting their luck on UPS not 'losing' it.

I keep the recipts for returns, and for everything that I do with any shipper. I always take outgoing packages directly to the hubs. Getting stuff lost is far too easy, and I did have a problem with an item that was returned to a vendor and they called to complain about the weight of the item. 'Well, you know what it should weigh, and it was plus or minus a pound of that weight, so why are you calling me? I mean, seriously, why are you calling?' They stammered something about the price of shipping being higher than they expected and wanted to know if I included 'anything extra'. 'Well, again, why are you calling me? Someone there did open the box, right? Ask them, maybe? I only sent back what I was supposed to send. Did UPS put their thumb on the scale? Again, why ask me? I dropped it off, what happened after that I don't know anything about. The receipt says 'x' pounds.' Well what we got weighed more than that. 'Well, sorry... That wasn't on me...'

The absolute strangest call I've ever gotten, and I've had some winners, but that was just bizarre...

No kidding. Mailed a 'tea towel' to CT. It disappeared. Filed a claim, and never heard a thing back. *sigh*

From experience I know the slip you receive doesn’t specify the weight. Only the time you handed it in.

Ordered midnight 8/8, 16 GB, 1TB about 1 minute after store opened. Apple Card tax charge still pending and still have original estimate of 8/2-8/9.

Wishing for some movement :(

Yeah. Could be. But then again I managed to do both in consequetive years and the trade-in was in the first year higher than the second. Of course could be of changes in valuation by Apple. But I did a trade in in the store in the first and in the second I did it through the online store and the value in the first was higher than the second.

Hang in there! Mine also says 8/2-8/10 and my credit card was charged yesterday and today it updated to preparing to ship. I don’t know how to check ups for a tracking number but i’m hoping it won’t ship from China

Thanks! What are your specs?

I haven't ordered a MacBook in awhile. But do the delivery dates eventually come down to something more reasonable like a week to deliver?

Mine that was originally scheduled for the 15 showed up this morning. Since I had gone to the Apple store Friday to get one -this one got delivered, taken to the Apple store and returned. Done with the order stuff now

It seems our friends in the US are getting more movement on there deliveries once the payment has been taken.

Ive not seen one EU/UK customer who’s delivery has moved forward after the payment has been taken?

This was fun. UPS tracking was indicating today for delivery. Oh good - there's the UPS truck. Driver disappears in back of his truck for 5 min. I eventually just walk out to the truck, and he tells me "well, I know you've got a package coming, but it's definitely not on my truck!". No additional info that he could provide. Oh joy.

6:05pm update: Driver circled back and dropped off the laptop. :p

Mine was supposed to come today, but is still in Louisville, and I am in Atlanta. I thought it had cleared customs yesterday, but apparently not, as that's what's happening now. The delivery window closed 15 minutes ago - though the UPS app still says it's coming today, which I'm sure it's not. Oh well, I can wait!

Sorry to hear. That's really lousy. Hope it turns up soon.
