Final Cut Confusion

Just got a 24" iMac (can't believe I was on PCs for so long before discovering these things!) and I mainly got it for Final Cut Pro.

will FCP work on the ATi Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card that the imac came with? or will I need to buy a new graphics card? (if so, which one would you recommend?)

please don't get too technical...it'll just go over my head!

thanks

Hopefully it will work with the 2600 PRO, as graphics cards are not upgradable in the iMac. Only thing you can upgrade is the RAM (easy) and the hard drive (not so easy).

My new 2.93 iMac came by fed ex from CA this morning. It is sitting in my car waiting for me to go home and play with it. They delivered it to my wife's work where she drew a face on the front of the box because the iMac is my new girlfriend.

It's possible but you have to know a lot about electrical things. :D

So, it's almost impossible.

I ordered the 24" 2.66 w/ the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics. I see that everyone on here basically ordered the 2.93 or the 3.06 with the GeForce cards.

I don't play games or do any sort of video editing. I download music, use iTunes, and here and there download some videos to burn to DVD. I use my computer tons but it's always for casual use.

Do you think I will be ok w/ the 2.66 (Nvidia GeForce 9400M) or should I return my new iMac (yet to arrive) and order the 2.93 GHz GeForce 120?

It'll be fine for you. Why would Apple make product which can't run OS X smoothly? 24" with 9400M is the "mass" model for people who watches movies and surfs on in the net, so it's for you.

Cool, thanks. Do you know if I can return my unopened purchase to the Apple Store?

Of course you can. You can return it in 14 days after purchase. If you open it you can still return it (but if you live in states you have to pay 10% of restocking fee)

Should have mentioned that I ordered it from the Apple online store

It'll be fine. I was going to get the 2.66 but went for the 2.93 at the last minute as I thought it might be more future proof. But certainly for everyday tasks, the 2.66 will be more than ample. :)

That's the thing, I guess I am not future proofing by going with the 2.66 GHz today to save a few bucks but possibly spend more down the road. By the way, this is my first Mac ever

Same here, my first Mac. What I would say is that if it's going to play on your mind, you should swap it while you still can.

just ordered mine last night and I'm so happy

24" screen

2.93ghz

4gb DDR3 RAM

Nvidia gt 120

BTO Options:

Wireless Keyboard

Wireless mighty mouse

Years of satisfaction

Guess I just need to justify the $70 or so to send it back and the $300 price difference for the 2.66 vs 2.93 & 9400M vs GT 120

It's totally worth getting the better iMac now. I for one didn't really NEED one. I just had a lot of music equipment sitting around that I hardly used. I wanted to sell all of it, but didn't want to spend that money on bills. I bought that stuff for personal enjoyment, not so I could pay off a credit card or two. And until recently, I couldn't think of anything that would bring me as much enjoyment as the music gear.... until I saw the new iMacs.

I was going to get the ATI Graphics card... Just for the hell of it. But the dumb shipping dates made me choose the GeForce 130.

There's nothing wrong with investing today for tomorrow when it comes to computers. Unless the computer is about to be updated.

The only logical reason I could see waiting to get a new iMac would be for snow leopard. But who knows when that will release. And more than likely they will not do any hardware updates with the new OS. I'd rather just buy the new OS

It was kind of surreal for me today. I was driving my car to the store where I was going to purchase my iMac and Pink Floyd came on. Last two songs from Dark Side of the Moon. Very odd. I get the cool songs on the radio when I'm about to do something cool.

20 Inch iMac(2009 Model) 2.66 Ghz Processor, 2Gigabytes Memory with a 4 Gigabyte Memory upgrade pack from New Egg for $52. Can't wait until I get off work to take it home and start using it.

By the way, I'm not a switcher. Windows PC will still be my main machine. This is a game developement machine for me.

Ok so I'm very heavily leaning towards returning my 2.66 GHz and getting the 2.93 GHz. This leads me to a couple of questions that I was hoping you kind folks can help me with

1) My 2.66 GHz is considered a custom mac only because I got the numeric keypad. I tried to do a return online but it won't let me b/c of the custom issue. Do you think Apple will allow me to return this machine even though by their standards it's "customized"?

2) If I go to the Apple store tomorrow to pick up the 2.93 GHz am I able to "customize" it at the Apple store by getting the numeric keyboard instead of the default keyboard?

3) Does anyone know the zip codee / city, state of where Apple returns go? Trying to get a sense of how much the return will cost me in S&H

ati radeon 4850 or nvidia gt 130

Oh well, canceled my iMac 3.06 intel core 2 duo, 1tb HD, 4GB ram, nVidia GeForce GT 130 512MB order today (Didn't have to pay restock or return shipping).

Got same setup w the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB instead...These things aren't cheap, so the $50 extra, and 3-5 week wait, for what I've read to be the best current graphics card Mac has by far (in post after post), I think I made the right move.

For whatever its worth...

1) I see customized refurbished computers on apple.com all the time. I would assume so.

2) As far as I know, BTO items are not available in the apple store. I was able to pick out a wireless mouse and keyboard for my new iMac today, but it was already pre-bundled. Call your Apple store tomorrow to see.

3) Shipping (with USPS) will be around $20 - $30. I've shipped a lot of 15 - 20 lbs items the past week and thats how much it was for me. I like USPS because they are cheaper and faster than UPS ground. You may be able to return it at an Apple store. Not sure on that one either.

Or just $5 more for students. :p But shipping time sucks. Glad someone has the patience.
