Oh well, canceled my iMac 3.06 intel core 2 duo, 1tb HD, 4GB ram, nVidia GeForce GT 130 512MB order today (Didn't have to pay restock or return shipping).

Got same setup w the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB instead...These things aren't cheap, so the $50 extra, and 3-5 week wait, for what I've read to be the best current graphics card Mac has by far (in post after post), I think I made the right move.

For whatever its worth...

Benchmarks of those GPUs are almost the same. GT130 (aka 9800M GTS) is desktop card so it's produces more heat (60W) and needs more power. 4850 is mobility card which is very energy efficient (about 45W).

4850 is little bit faster, so if you want to wait, that's the way to go.

:( according to the fedex site mine left sacramento, ca and has been in transit to reno, nv for two days now. lol

hopefully it's just not showing up for whatever stupid reason. delivery estimate is still tomorrow according to the site

Received my 24" 2.8GHz clearance iMac and 4GB RAM upgrade kit last night. I bought it from an authorized online dealer and it had the drop-in iLife 09 disk in the box. The screen and graphics are ridiculously great and so is the processing speed! Definitely worth the upgrade from my white iMac 20".:)

Just got my 24" 2.8 Ghz Refurb and I oh so pleased with it thus far. I'm coming from a 17" 1.25 G4 purchased in early 2004 so its not hard to please. :) Love that 17" machine BTW, my first mac and it has made me a addict for life! I do have 2 gripes with my new 24" though.

1) The brightness control is awful. My old 17" had a wide range of control. It could be dimmed down to a very low level which was almost too dim in a sunlit room (but perfect for working in low lit room at night) and brightened to easily see the screen in any sun lit room.

The 24" has a VERY narrow band of control. It ranges from very bright to just bright. When I reduce the brightness I can see the change, its just not that much. It's very obvious when comparing the 2 macs side by side at the lowest brightness level. To put some numbers to it the 17 inch has a brightness range from 1-10 where the 24 inch is 6-10.

The reason I'm perturbed is because when I work at night its like staring at the sun after awhile. I have pushed the screen as far as way as I can. I realize there are things I can put on the screen but I would hate to do that on such a fine piece of hardware.

Does anyone know if this is just mine or is it with all the new iMacs? Any thoughts on how to deal with it?

2) Not Apples issue, but I have experienced the crucial bad ram problem (2 x 2GB ram sticks) that I've read about in various threads. I'll just suck it up and call their (crucial's) cust serv dept and wait for some new ones.

Thanks for listening!

I posted this in the other iMac BTO thread but I guess I'll post it here too. Just a question..
Has the "estimated delivery" date on the fedex site been spot-on for you all? I have one that originally said it was being delivered the 19th and now it says 17th. I'm trusting 17th is right but since I have to sign for it I don't wanna miss it when it comes. (Just FYI it's the lower-end 24", I use a PC for gaming and don't plan on doing anything really graphically demanding).

Got my 24" 2.8 Refurb today

Fedex was supposed to deliver it yesterday, but it came today. I'm not even close to making the switch from the PC yet; still have much work in copying files and preparing my desk/shelf area for a larger screen. It came in a white box, but not a new iMac white box. It looks pretty tidy and clean inside, and there was a disk with iLife 09 included. I'll report back when I start my new life as a Mac user.

No, because it needs OS X 10.5.7.

Downloaded shades as was recommended..... AWESOME!!! My rods and cones are feeling the love already!

i like the ability to turn it on and off easily and also the very stylish slider in the top bar.

Thanks again for the recommendation!

mine originally said 12th-18th before it actually shipped

then when it shipped it said 14th (today)
just checked and it's on a truck for delivery :)

Originally bought the prev Gen 2.8 at my local apple store but encountered some heating problems and a small dent on the casing so returned it, they wanted to give me the 2.66 new model but I said no way that is a downgrade model, if I wanted to accept the 2.66 model I had to pay nothing so considering the 2.66 is 100 more than the old 2.8 currently it would have been a good deal for some but not for me, after returning the damage 2.8, I received a gift card and decided to go for the highest configuration I could afford so ordered the 3.06 2GB 8800 GS Prev Gen Refurbished imac, I feel more comfortable now knowing I am getting the top of the line machine of prev gen, I was about to get the 2.93 one but I really need the extra speed of the CPU, the RAM can be upgraded for just 50 bucks on the 3.06 and I wont need more than 4GB, I also got the apple care. I have seen the Benchmarks and the 3.06 is much faster that the 2.93 even faster than the new 3.06 according to user testings on performed and posted on primatelabs.com so I am a happy camper, mine arrives on Friday hopefully.

Can't wait for my replacement. Got stuck pixel 5 days after delivery, it sucks. I hope that the new one will be stuck pixel free.

You were able to order a refurb from a Apple store?

Just ordered my first Mac!

After 25 years of Microsoft based computers I made the leap today to the new iMac after quite a bit of back and forth decision making! I will be using it not so much for gaming, but for iLife apps as well as productivity.

Here is what I ordered:

2.93GHZ INTEL CORE 2 DUO
4GB 1066MHZ DDR3 SDRAM-2X2GB
NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 120 256MB
1.0TB SERIAL ATA DRIVE
APPLE WIRELESS MIGHTY MOUSE
KYBD (NUM)

Ships: 1 - 3 business days
Delivers: Mar 20 - Mar 26

Can't wait to get it!

Just picked up a new 20" iMac from the store with the wireless keyboard and mouse for my son (he's six). He thinks it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Given my techno geek side, I was looking at the 24" 2.93 or better but it would not fit on his desk given overhead clearance issues.

In scanning though this thread, I haven't seen many people that have purchased the 20". I know that the screen is better on the 24" iMac and is much better on the new 24" ACD (which I have for my MBP) but all in all after playing around with it, it is a great little computer and I am sure that it will get use from others in the family as well.

I actually considered getting a MacMini for him instead but given that i don't have any monitors or keyboards laying around and hooking a mini up to my ACD would defeat the point of having another computer that can be used while I am working, it would have cost me almost as much to buy a monitor, keyboard, mouse and the mini (yes I know that the monitor could be used in future computers).

So, why isn't the 20" getting much love around here?

So, why isn't the 20" getting much love around here?

I don't think it's the 20" not getting much love but the fact that the price point for the 24" (albeit refurb/previous generation) now being within reach of people's budgets (myself included) who could use the extra display real estate. The 20" (new, refurb and previous gen) is a very good machine and can fulfill most people's needs. Congrats on your purchase and enjoy the wonderful OS and hardware platform!
