Fastboot is a rooting thing correct? So those of us not planning on rooting or unlocking the bootloader don't have to worry about this right?

The Fast Boot he's talking about i believe is something different, when it's enabled and the phone is switched off the phone actually goes into a hibernation mode and the RAM is kept powered up so when the phone is powered up again the phone boots really fast and in the state it was previous.

Hmmm, I'll have to look into this more.

It's not something i'd worry about and much less disregard purchasing a phone because. I have the option turned off on my Evo 3D as when i switch the phone off i want it totally off and not draining the battery so when i next turn it on the battery is dead.

This is true - Android already doesn't do the best job managing battery life in standby mode.

The HTC One is the front runner for my new Android phone. I can't get over the design - its absolutely the best I've seen - better than the iPhone 5 even (and I love my iPhone 5).

It's not like when the screen goes off the phones goes to sleep. This is a mode the phone goes into when someone presses the power button and turns the phone off, obviously when someone does this too almost all phones the phone is totally powered down. But with HTC phones when the Fast Boot option is turned on the RAM is kept powered up so when the phone is next turned on the phone will boot in under 10 secs where any other phone will take 30+secs.

I agree the phone is a great looking phone, the button configuration annoys me though.

Ahh I see....thanks for the info.

Was it Expansys that fulfilled your order in the end?

No vodafone Ireland.

Don't worry about it. Fastboot just speeds up the bootime of your handset by a few seconds. With fastboot on it booted in 6-10 seconds, with it off 15-20 seconds. Really how often do you turn off and how important is those 10 seconds in your life.

-------- quick update ----- proper review will come after more time -------

So I'm loving the phone so far. It's truly great. The power button placement is a non issue, I'll post pictures of me holding it tomorrow but when I hold it in my left hand I can comfortably press it and then position my hand to work the phone with one hand without too much trouble at all.

The capacitive buttons are smart, depending on surrounding light they are either illuminated if its dak or if its bright not. Quite clever indeed.

I turned off google now as its pretty useless to me here.

Sense 5 is fantastic, its so fast with zero and I mean zero lag. Multi-tasking works fantastically and unlike previous One X it works properly. I haven't had to think about memory management (the benefit of 2gb ram) and the photos and gallery are great.

Blinkfeed is missing a number of the contributors I need to replace Pulse, but for twitter and social feeds its very good. They have an App section in Blinkfeed for future support from third party applications.

Battery life hasn't been a concern so far even though I've been playing with it today and installing my applications. I charged upto about 45% after installing my applications at around 1pm today, and since then I've been listening to music via Bluetooth, making calls and texts, taking photos and uploading to Facebook and emailing them as well as uploading the Zoe for demo. I've been reading my news feeds and I'm just about to put it back on charge now. Battery level is currently 15%; so in 8 hours of decent usage I've only dropped 30% battery meter (45 down to 15)

Bluetooth works perfectly with my car stereo's Bluetooth for calls and music playback in the car. I had some issues with the One X sometimes losing media connection via Bluetooth when a call came in.

Call quality is great, very one I've spoken too today have remarked I sounded very clear, even reception is improved and the phone managed to stay connected even when passing through a notorious cellular black spot.

Overall so far - so very good.

One issue..... Angry Birds StarWars doesn't work! ;)

I really like the customisable application drawer. It almost replaces the need for home screens, however I like to have music playback widget :)

The viewing angles on the device are insane......

TV is cool..... :)

Set it up to work with my Humax FreeTime FreeSat box and it works a treat. Now I don't have to use its remote to see a visible guide of my favorite programmes and I can get it to record them fom my phone. It's fab :) a smart remote without the extra expense :)

Have you encountered the dreaded menu bar at the bottom of the screen in any apps? or have you configured the menu button to be a menu button like i did with the One X.

Wow. Very positive sounding. How's the home button configuration? Is it as awkward as it looks to not have a centered-home button?

Would love pics of in-hand use of the power/sleep button and how reachable it is. This concerns me greatly as the HTC One X was horribly cumbersome to reach for.

Very glad to hear about the battery life too, but are you in the UK? Is it on LTE?

Keep on posting! The verdict is still out between the S4 and the One. Would love to see comparison shots too between the One and maybe an iPhone or a Nexus 4 if you have them.

How's the build quality? Any fake metal bits? Flex of the screen? I'd love some comparisons with an iPhone as well.

Yes. The menu to assign menu to a long press of the back is not there on retail software. A bug slipped into retail software (uncovered by XDA who fixed it) that basically when HTC changed device iD from dev to retail they forgot to tell the software so it looks for 'dev' iD and when it doesn't see it, it doesn't give you the menu option in settings. HTC have said it will be fixed in a software update as they didn't mean to take it out.

Home button arrangement took me about 30 minutes to get used to. It's not hard to get used to, especially in low light when the buttons are illuminated.

Power button is much more comfortable for me than it was on the one X and vastly superior to the 8X

I'm left handed and have no trouble anyway. Will post picture later :). Don't have a nexus 4 but will post compared to iPhone 5 & 4S :)

I'm in Ireland not UK - and we don't have LTE.

Build quality is perfect, I've read of others with few issues but mine is absolutely perfect. No gaps, no flex, all absolutely perfect.

I'll post a few pics between iPhone later too :)

------

One small thing I don't like is HTC's official screen protector for the device. It's not oleophobic coated and gets very finger print greasy. I will be replacing it with a better brand (steinheil) later.

Great reviews so far MRU, so jealous right now.

How much storage capacity are you working with?

There was quite a bit of media pre-installed like Thor movie, music and photos. I removed all them and it left me with around 27gb free. Rest I assume is reserved for OS and factory restore image...

I've downloaded around 50 apps, and have 15gb of music installed and so have 11gb free or thereabouts now.

So a photo of the size of the phone in the hand compared to the iPhone 5 with and without case

Viewing angles and brightness are fantastic on both devices.

And this is why I'm starting to hate HTC. They constantly try to screw people over. China is getting a specific version of the One with a microSD slot.

Much like how three (or four) of the major US carriers will be getting the HTC One, China's three carriers will also be receiving the same treatment, according to the country's official device approval database. The three flavors are known as 802w, 802t and 802d, each heading to China Unicom (WCDMA), China Mobile (TD-SCDMA) and China Telecom (CDMA), respectively. For the record, the European version we have is 801n, so perhaps the third digit represents the number of SIM slots featured on the device.

This is certainly the case for the 802w. Earlier today, a Sina Weibo user posted the above photo of said phone with its back cover -- between the two plastic lines -- removed, thus exposing not only its two SIM card slots but also a microSD slot just below the camera. It's worth noting that the European version of the One doesn't come with a removable back cover, let alone a secondary SIM slot or a microSD slot; but at least it has LTE, right? Since Sina Weibo requires you to login before letting you see the post, we've got the full picture for you after the break.

They did the same thing last year. Gave AT&T the One X and Sprint got a specific version of the One X with a metal body, removable battery, stand, SD card slot.

Much like Samsung is giving the rest of the world a faster, more battery efficient GS4 and the US a slower, less battery efficient version?

I think your conclusion that HTC is trying to "screw" people is a little overdramatic.....

Despite what many on here think, the group that wants (and screams) for a removable back, battery and micro SD card is not that large and certainly not the majority.....

The majority likely have no clue they even have a slot for a micro SD card - or even what an SD card is....lol

I think its more what carriers demand ? Dunno but any chance the china htc one is not crafted the same way ?

In fairness you've been hating on HTC long before that article :p;)

Yeah nearly all phones in China seem to carry dual sims for some reason ...

Certainly it cant be crafted the same way as the back on the international one is a solid sheet of aluminium with clever recesses embezzled into the frame for the aerials but it one whole piece regardless. Clearly that can't be the case with the Chinese model.

A Little Battery Update... (a normal working day test)

My phone has been on since 8:30am this morning. It's now 5pm here and with normal moderate usage throughout the day, listening to music as I walk on the beach, bluetooth calls in the car, voice calls at work, checking email every 15 minutes, facebook and twitter updates, reading some blinkfeed and pulse, I'm currently at 78%.

And power-saver feature is NOT on.

Will see how it holds up till I go to bed this evening, but I certainly am not having any problems. :)

What's the deal with SD cards? [insert Seinfeld voice].
Really? I don't get it. If 32 GB or 64 GB is big enough what's the need for SD cards?
