It's time to decide.....

To my surprise a replacement HTC One has just this very minute been delivered by courier !! They told me 14 days. It was actually 6.......

Now I have to decide which phone I prefer, and which I can personally deal with on a day to day basis.

The 13mp camera is holding me on the S4

Sense 5 and general aesthetics and uniformity of GUI design is swaying me towards the HTC One.

I am utterly torn at this moment. No matter which I choose I am going to be making compromises. I just have to work out which compromise is more important to me.

Yea I agree it is ironic, but I think iPhone users need to look in the mirror they have been doing the same things for the past 6 years. I don't like either companies marketing strategies much at all.

I have nothing against HTC or their new One. Great phone, but if iPhone owners are going to say they have not been buying Galaxy phones because they don't like Samsung ads is kind a crazy. Now I am not saying that is what you are doing, but I do get that from some posters. I would never buy another Apple product if I went by the way the company conducts themselves. I just look past the ads and go with what phone suits me best.

I think it is great the iPhone users are trying android, but to come out and now bash Samsung for just have a gimmicky phone is just kind of stupid. The S4 is a great phone too that is built the way it is for a reason. It works for a large amount of people just like the iPhone works for a lot of people. People wanted to jump all over other posters when they bashed the iphone, but now it seems to be the cool thing to bash Samsung. I am not defending Samsung cause I could careless, but I just find it funny how people were terrible for talking bad about Apple. Now the tables are turn and it is all good.

That double standard goes both ways bud....

And I agree for the most part. For me, the marketing is only part of it - and I don't recall Apple ever specifically targeting another OEM and putting them down in an ad. Apple's ads are generally focused on a product or feature set. Samsung's ads tend to be focused on why the competition (and worse the competition's users) are idiots.

There's a pretty big difference.

On the other hand, I too tend to ignore Apple's grandiose marketing claims and just go by what I think and feel about the device. The 3.5" iPhone was a perfect fit in my hand, but a 4" phone (and even 4.7") suits me just fine as well.

Even though Apple embellished when saying something like that, it doesn't mean there aren't people who truly do think that 3.5" is perfect. But I also think Apple will release a larger iPhone next year so...

Did I not say it goes both ways? People having been bashing Apple for years. I know this. I just think it is funny all those people that got so mad at people for bashing Apple now find it OK to attack Samsung cause they have found the "perfect" android phone. Half the people that are doing this have never even tried a Samsung phone before. Yes they are plastic, and they don't have quite the same feel as the HTC One. But the S4 is just as powerful and is a great phone. HTC did not just create this great android phone no one has seen before. Great android phones have been being made for a couple of years now. HTC just decided to make the One look a lot like the iPhone. Seems to have worked.

I agree - my only point was that, as specs go, there isn't a flagship smartphone out there that couldn't handle what a majority of consumers use their smartphones for. Other criteria have to come into play when choosing a smartphone.

I'm not saying the GS4 is a bad phone. I'm just saying its not perfect. And for me, one of those "other criteria" has to do with their marketing and overall philosophy.

I will say this about the One - while there have been quite a few great Android devices, the One is the first which matches (and quite possibly exceeds) the build fit and finish of the iPhone. It truly is a beautifully designed and made device. And no other Android phone had done this until now.

I would agree with the part about maybe exceeding the iPhone. I think the screen may be the best screen we will see all year. I do like a lot about the One. I still am not convinced by skinned android phones.

I don't know I just thought there would never be a good enough android phone to pull iPhone users away. It seems all the die hard android user go more for the S4 and new comers like the HTC. I kind of saw it coming with HTC making it look so similar to the iPhone. I think you have a great phone. It just seems like the tables have been turned a bit.

Don't worry - I'll find a way to get the iPhone 5S too.....even though I say now I won't upgrade my iPhone this year ;)

Apple will announce it and I'll want it - then I'll talk my mom into letting me use her upgrade (still on a family plan - cheaper for my wife and I and would be the same for our families regardless) since she just used my wife's for her 5 - plus she has an iPad upgrade she can use sometime later.

Then I'll have two upgrades next year (my phone line and iPad mini line) and will likely upgrade both.....

I have a problem....:p

Yea me too, but I will not be getting the iPhone 5s. No thank you. I understand you are still an iPhone guy, and this might be just a short stop on android for you. I am glad to see you are liking it though. Wish more people would give it a try.

Am I right in thinking that the camera is the only factor swaying you towards S4 over the One?

That seems to be the general theme of all the reviews I've seen up to now, that everyone is blown-away by the One's build quality and Sense 5, but lean towards the S4 in the end due to the camera being a better all-round performer (external battery/SD card slot aside).

I think HTC's Ultrapixel gamble may very well back-fire on them. Can you imagine the response the One would having if it had the same 13MP sensor as the S4? Or even an improved version of last years 8MP sensor? HTC would be wiping the floor with their competitors right about now.

I hope HTC can stay in the game long enough to launch a successor to the One with an 8 Ultapixel camera - then the competion will really be worried.

Yes thats the only thing, its the camera... In EVERY other regard to me the HTC One is a superior device.

External battery doesn't bother me. SD card other than for music and video is a bit irrelevant with Android 4.1 meaning I can't put apps onto it meaning I will be restricted to the 9gb of storage on the S4.

This should be a easy choice to be honest, HTC One is in my opinion the better overal phone.

Remember, the S4 Bootloader has been unlocked. At some point in the future, you will be able to use the SD card as internal memory for Apps. Just not sure when.

You'd think it would be - but it doesn't appear to be so easy. I am torn, but I am veering to one device over the other.
It would be a easy choice for me, but ofcourse that's a personal opinion and could be different for you. I would rather have the first real good looking android phone who can competed with the Galaxy S4 (hardware wise) and looks much better, even better than the iPhone 5. But if the camera is a huge dealbreaker for you, then you should keep the Galaxy S4. I'm still waiting for delivery of mine (comming from the Galaxy S3).

Oh its no short stop - I'll be rocking both for as long as I can :D

Well enjoy both iOS and android. I don't know if I could even use them side by side. Any time I try to use the keyboard on iOS now I always look for the period key by the return key. I also try to hold keys down to get different characters and well of course none of that does anything on iOS. I just don't think I could make it work.

Lol - iOS is second nature to me....plus I have to use an iPhone for my job - company requires them ;)

Yea I understand. IOS use to be second nature for me. Now I am just way to use to android. I guess if I used both like you do all the time I could get use to it. Maybe one day I could talk myself into selling my note 2 and getting an HTC one, but I just like having it as a second phone. Great for watching videos.

The HTC One on paper is the better phone without a doubt but you have to factor in things like apps available, being willing to live without some current apps (as was my situation) and being comfortable with the media ecosystem (not having iTunes on Android). There are people who have spend years and lot of money buying apps so for someone to just walk away, I can see it being a tough choice.

I'm not speaking about the debate if iOS users should leave there iPhone. It all depends on taste after all. Android and iOS are both good and people should make there own descision, wether they want to switch or not.

Fyi, I just got an email that the HTC One trade in program has been extended to May 19th.

What's this?

----------

Sigh, I was really considering grabbing the htc tomorrow but then I see the black version hasn't been released yet. Any eta on the black version?

After many thoughts and debates I have decided on the winner for me.

I'm going to sell the S4 and keep the HTC One.

A better camera alone is NOT enough of a payoff for poorer OS GUI / Design language. The more I use the S4 the more the GUI irks me. The fact that I can change to a different launcher doesn't solve issues with dialler, calendar, contacts, music player etc.

Performance is an issue, and despite the more powerful processor the stutters are noticeable and the millisecond delays irk me more than I thought, maybe using another device where there isn't the delay.

Battery life likewise is far better for my own personal usage on the HTC One, and likewise I do not want to ever become a slave to memory management (I know in theory you shouldn't need to, but theory and practice often are not the same thing) that the S4 was making me. Checking what Samsung services had started running in the background despite me not using them.....

So yeah, I've decided it's the HTC One that wins out for me, because for me in EVERY regard other than Camera it is the better device, with better UI and better performance all round.

I love the camera on the S4, but I use a phone for far more things than just photos and for that reason - there was only 'ONE' choice. (see what I did there).
