That's the beauty of iCloud, there's no need to get anything but the base storage.

No, it's not the beauty, you are still paying for icloud. Apple is still getting money from you. Either pay $50-100 one time fee for more GB or keep paying monthly for icloud. Apple wins both ways.

I don't think you understand how this works. I know it can be confusing to Android users who don't have an iPhone.

iCloud also keeps a full resolution backup of your pictures and keeps backups of your iPhone. I have a 256 GB iPhone that's not even 1/3 full and I pay for extra iCloud storage (99 cents per month). If I drop my phone off a cliff or it gets damaged somehow I can simply get another iPhone, log in, wait for restore, and I'm back to where I was.

That's
That's exactly what would have happened if they chose to start at 128 GB or 256 GB with the same price. Nothing is free. I don't see why people are complaining about having the option to buy less. This reminds me of Android fanboys who think if you don't buy what they want you're wrong. I'm sorry but if enough users only need 64 GB then Apple will offer it to them. The whole why don't they offer 16 GB argument is faulty because no one or perhaps very few would be able to use it. I know so many people who have 64 GB on their iPhone and aren't anywhere close to the limit. Once time changes where these people need more then Apple will remove the 64 GB option.

A strong argument for having the option to buy just the phone without having to pay for the charger and headphones could be made but haters would have a field day with this so it's not likely to happen

I Pity Anyone still waiting on a fast charger from Apple as a handout . Nice gesture / should be a given but isn’t of course / but ultimately inconsequential.

Should’ve Bought used or 3rd party long ago, you’ve wasted a few years of what could all been saved time every time you plug it in. Especially if you got a 12.9 ipad

The base storage always has to be just slightly too tight to make the next step up appealing... apart from the 6s in 2015, still offering 16GB at that point was beyond ridiculous, it clearly wasn't enough for a phone that had just introduced memory hungry 4K video and live photos as big tent pole features, and there were even problems just having enough room to upgrade the OS!

I know how it works, you are paying 99 cents a month, that' $12 a year in revenue apple is getting from you

I don't pay Apple a dime more than my iphone xs max 256GB purchase.

I manually backup my iphone to my computer every 1-2 months.

Bottom line, Apple is gonna to get ur month either by fear of running out of space and forcing people to spend more on GB they probably don't need, or force people out of GB to pay for icloud.

The whole trapped in the ecosystem is silly. Most iPhone users don't have an ecosystem other than iCloud backup and a few apps they purchased. I could go to a Note 10+ and would have absolutely no issues. It's an awesome phone and would do everything my XS Max would do (sorry Apple fanboys ;) ). I just choose not to for several reasons. First is privacy/ security and the second is support. I can go to the Apple store anytime and get help or repairs if I have issues. I have other smaller reasons but that's unimportant. The thing is of my own free will I choose to use an iPhone. This might be hard to comprehend by Android fanboys but ole Timmy isn't forcing me. Will I ever get an Android phone? Possibly and I've had several in the past.

Exactly. The ironic thing is the Android zealots criticise Apple for the lack of choice then equally criticise people who choose to buy an iPhone. Is choice a good thing, or not? Pick one and stick with it.

My main issue with android is that it's a google product and I disagree very strongly with their business practices (hoovering up user data to build profiles to sell advertising against). They are also very anti-competitive because they use their advertising business to subsidise a huge number of unrelated products and services which has minimised competition in those categories (how many operating systems compete with Android, for instance?).

For people who don't need everything on their phone and not using 500gb or storage it's actually cheaper to get the base model with iCloud. And even cheaper if you upgrade more often. You can purchase the 256gb for $150 more or you can purchase the 64gb and pay $12/year for 50gb additional storage or $36/year for 200gb. If you keep your phone for less than 5 years ang get the base model and iCloud it's actually cheaper than getting the 256gb model.

I was debating between the 64gb and 256gb. I'm currently using about 250gb but that's because I have my entire music library, most of my movie/tv library and years and years of photos. With my lifestyle now, I really don't need to keep my music, videos and photos on my phone. I was going to get the base model and actually ordered it, but cancelled and ordered the 256gb. Still thinking about changing my mind again to the 64gb since ship dates are still at 9/20.

I think Apple is keeping the 64gb around for 1) most people don't need more storage, 2) they can sell iCloud and 3) they can make money off the upgrade to the middle tier. If they got rid of 64gb, I bet a lot less people would go for the 256gb and they would lose money, although I do see them changing the base in the future when more people are wanting more storage. I wish they would start the base at 256gb, but I'm not mad about.

I love some of these counter arguments defending this horrible practice of increasing their margins.

1. "I don't need it, therefore it's ok." I'm sorry but if you are buying a $999 phone with 64gb, and not using the space, then you're not using this phone to its capabilities. So, the question is - why are you buying it? Do you do it because you think it's cool? Are you somehow this rich? (i doubt it, the median salary in the U.S attests to that) Can't stand when people say "i can afford it" nah, you probably can't. Some of you can, but most people can't without the use of credit.

2. "use Icloud" yes use the worst cloud system out there. Delete in one place, lose your stuff everywhere. Despite some minor improvements to icloud over the years the thing still sucks. it is confusing as all hell, and look, i'm far from tech illiterate and their approach still doesn't make much sense to me.

Bottom line is throwing 64gb into the 'pro' line is absolute greed. I recently purchased a macbook pro 2019 for my everyday use, both work and leisure and i had no choice but to upgrade to 256gb, and i already ate half that memory just installing my apps. Why? because i actually use the computer more than just web browsing and email. That's the purpose of "pro" lines. Yet, apple chooses to screw us.

You may backup your iphone to your computer but surely you understand 12 dollars a year on storage is cheaper than paying an extra 100dollars for the non base storage. So yes, that is the beauty of icloud storage

Here we go again. Now that everyone will be recording 4K 60fps footage and taking three photos at once with their iPhone 11... yikes. A repeat of the 16 GB iPhone 6s. (sigh)

The 6s is still a usable smartphone even today, but I feel sorry for anyone who got one of those with 16 GB.
Do people seriously not use cloud storage for their photos? If I stored my library on device I would need a 512GB phone. But lol...just why..

It makes perfect sense. iCloud isn’t treated like a “backup” solution, it’s treated as storage for your devices. Just like on-device storage, except it’s mirrored to all your devices. It’s exactly why I don’t need any more than base storage. Thanks to iCloud my 64GB iPhone is 264GB.

So unnecessarily condescending.

I have an X, my sister has a 7. Immediately writing off people who disagree with you as android users is not only baseless and rude, it shows that your argument is shallow.

Also, 1/3 of 256gb is 85gb, so you are over the base storage and show exactly why the base of 64gb is a joke.

Anyone who has kids knows that 64gb gets eaten up super fast. Having to juggle space onto the cloud is super annoying. If you are selling a premium experience, actually offer a premium experience. The fast charger is a step in the right direction but the base storage is laughable.

I'm not sure what your point is. Of course Apple are getting money from me, I'm paying for a service they are providing me. Apple wins, and I win.

What do you mean by “juggling space”? The beauty of iCloud is that you don’t. The device just uploads your photos and video as necessary. And vice versa. Then backup your Mac with Time Machine and you have yet another secure copy of your photo library.

Seems like you don't understand how that same process works under most android devices. Google photo allows full resolution picture backups as well. All personal data is on a microSD card that can be backed up and restored from a file server at home.

iCloud optimise storage is such a poor experience.
Having to download photos and videos when clicking on them meh.
I use iCloud, and had enabled this function and it was fustrating so turned it off.
Having originals on your phone at all times and being able to access in its full glory at anytime regardless of connectivity >>>

64GB is a poor proposition.

iCloud is not a substitute or replacement for local storage, please stop pushing the narrative that it is.

Base should have 128GB - no contest.

Well maybe you need to talk to some of my Android using friends and show them how to set it up. On iPhones you don't have to do anything because it's automatic. When I replace my iPhone even when I went from the iPhone 7 to the XS Max the new phone was an exact clone of the old one even down to icon location on the screen. Perhaps this is possible on Android but none of my friends who have Android phones know how to do it. It's funny watching them spend hours trying to setup their new phones to be like the old one lol

Base storage should have 128GB youre correct, were not arguing that.
But when you have pictures and videos dating back to 2014 why would i want to keep the full resolution version on my phone when i rarely look at them.
Maybe your connection is slow as my pictures load instantly, videos can take longer

The iPhone 11 Pro is a beast, don’t let 64GB ruin it. That’s like having a Ferrari with a gallon of gas.

I went with the 256GB model Pro Max green

These phones are built to last for years, and stand the test of time. 64GB is not..

YOUR base storage should be 128 GB because YOU need this. Other people who don't need this shouldn't be forced to pay for a feature on a phone because you need it. This attitude almost reminds me of the old Apple snobs who would say "well that's just the way it is so you need conform to the device". Sorry but just because you want or need something doesn't mean I do. I don't think stainless steel Apple Watches are good because they're too heavy. I won't buy one. I'm not saying all Apple Watches should be either aluminum or titanium and stainless should be discontinued because heavy watches feel uncomfortable to me. I think it's perfectly acceptable for other people to be allowed to purchase a stainless steel Apple Watch even though I'll NEVER buy one.

This is really stupid in my opinion. I don’t get the reason for keeping the base storage at 64gb for a “pro” version. Personally it doesn’t really effect me, I have 256gb on my 8 Plus but am using 32.5gb.

And there is your reason. Right in front of you. A lot of people don't need more than 64GB. It's really just that simple. If you need more, buy more.

Then buy the 256 GB model? Did Tim Apple demand you buy the 64 GB model when you went to the Apple Store. That's just unacceptable!

seriously apple is too much. im' still waiting for the day everyone does a giant collective **** OFF and their stocks plummet.

There's this wonderful thing in 2019. It's called The Cloud. We store our videos and photos there. LOL. 64gb is fine for a great many people. Ya need more? Buy more.

Forced to pay? If Apple increase the base storage and keep the same price.
Whats the problem?
