My iPad Mini 5, is already using 20gb of storage out of 64gb.
Didn't sync my personal music files to it.
Only installed two games that total to 2.3gb.
No photos or videos taken.
Have 67 apps that are not games.
System storage takes up 6.5gb.
Only music that's installed is from Spotify playlist downloads which takes up 1.48gb. My Spotify playlists are small.
And I just recently got this Mini a couple weeks ago.

So you really think the above is typical for an iPhone user? HELL NO!!!!

Yes that sounds fairly typical. Most users won't have any music on their devices anymore (because they'll pay for a streaming service) so the only thing taking up any appreciable space will be apps and photos.

So you’re basing what you think is typical for iPhone users on what’s on YOUR iPad LMAO

Please cite your source for this is not a typical case. Every friend I know that has an iPhone X or even older iPhones has 64 GB or less. It seems like you’re making up stuff to justify your opinion that people should not be allowed to buy reduce storage. This is just an elitist attitude that doesn’t make sense. Just because someone has the same phone you have with less storage doesn’t devalue your phone. Perhaps you feel you can’t show off your phone to your friends because they might think it's the cheaper one with only 64 GB but that sounds like a problem you have. Perhaps Apple needs to make a special color for the 512 GB model so the elitist people that feel they're better that other people with a cheap 64 GB model can show it off

Seems like you're the one that feeling some type of self pity. I never clowned anyone for having base storage. But if you want to believe Apple throwing you 64gb at $1k+ prices is okay, then they got you wrapped around their finger.

I’m not disagreeing that what you’re saying is wrong but I’m saying some people didn’t think of it that way. I had friends that thought the iPhone XR was a downgrade from the iPhone 8. Apple should’ve done a better job marketing the XR and it should’ve came out at the same time as the iPhone X that way when the new iPhone came out people had a choice to upgrade to the new system without paying $1000. Either way both the iPhone X and iPhone XR sold like hotcakes so Apple did a good job marketing them to sell but they could’ve done better at squishing some of the negativity.

The Xr couldn't have come out at the same time as the X. The X was a brand new iPhone design with components that Apple couldn't make enough of. Don't forget the X wasn't released at the same time as the 8 precisely because of this.

Given the supply constraints on the X it would have been suicide for Apple to have had their standard range model being in such short supply at the same time. The 8 was there precisely for that reason. It took Apple another year to developer the tech to allow LCD screens in the X design anyway, the technology wasn't there to release!

If you only need 64GB storage then why isn't this ok?

If you're good with 64gb, then fine. I'm not arguing against the user. But there is no defending Apple selling a $1k+ device with only 64gb. And most users can't deal with 64gb. Why do you think Apple has Offload unused apps feature? It sure wasn't cause users had too much space left.

Well my friends that own this $1000 iPhone with 64 GB of storage have absolutely no problem but it seems like you’re the one that’s the problem with them choosing 64 GB on their phone. I like how this works you want to or feel the need to tell others what should be on their phone because it's better for you. Sorry dude this isn't communism or a dictatorship but rather a free market economy. My apologies and no offense meant if you’re communist or live in a communist country. I have friends that are and I feel there’s nothing wrong with that if it’s your choice but it’s not my choice. If people want 64 GB they will buy it but if not they won’t. It's not up to you to decide what should be on their phones.

most users can easily deal with 64gb. That’s why the base models are the best selling!

Nobody chooses 64gb because they can't handle having more storage. 64gb is not the choice that was made. It's the pricing that was the decision. You give your "friends" the option of having 128gb for the same price, NOT ONE OF THEM would still choose the 64gb.

If people want to buy $1000 device with 64 GB they should be allowed to. If you don’t like it don’t buy it. That’s how free market economy works. If enough people think it should have more memory or it's too expensive, they won’t buy at then Apple will increase the memory. Right now quite a few people are comfortable with 64 GB. This works for them. This may not work for you but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for other people. Other people can be different than you and have different needs. Some people find this really hard to comprehend.

If I was given the option of 128gb for the same price as 64gb I would take the 128gb.
But you’re making an assumption there that the 128gb option would be the same price.

My assumption is that it wouldn’t be the same price and it would cost more.

Of course. I would take the 2 TB model. That’s like saying no one to chooses a Ford over Ferrari but not everyone should be forced or have to spend the money to buy a Ferrari. They should be allowed to buy a Ford if that’s what they can afford and that’s in their budget. You’re trying to tell them they must buy something else. If you need or want a Ferrari that’s your choice to buy it. The choice is there for you this doesn’t mean you should take away others choice to buy what they want.

Exactly. The problem is people today have been told they should get free this and free that but the reality is nothing is free. It’s impossible for something to be free because someone made it, someone has to sell it market it or whatever. People say oh well the memory only cost six dollars that’s stupid. The $40 case for your phone at Walmart was made in China for four dollars. Sorry but that’s just reality. You’re not getting it for four dollars. You’re not getting memory upgrades for wholesale prices either. If Apple installs X retail dollars worth of memory in the phone they will either have to cut the same amount of retail dollars worth of something in that phone or increase the retail price that much.

ignorant and entitled people believe they should get something for free.

no idea how or why people got like this but it’s an incredibly ugly trait.

I’m not arguing against anyone. I’m not sure your opinion on this but I’m just trying to state or clarify facts for people who don’t understand. It’s surprising how many people don’t understand basic economics. That doesn’t make them dumb or ignorant but rather they just don’t know that.

I think it’s just something people are taught. I don’t think they’re ignorant but maybe entitled would be a good description. It’s just that some people are. They’re not bad people but rather they just misunderstand things.

I believe the only time Apple increased the base price was when they went from the 32gb to 64gb and at that time it was about 5 years since the last price increase. So it's hard to say if the price increase was due to prices going up or the base storage going up. All of the other times, the price stayed the same (8 to 16 and 16 to 32). The base price is already so high, I doubt they will increase the base model just because they're increasing the base storage.

I'm pretty sure the storage of 64gb compared to 128gb has a minimal factor of Apple setting the price. Apple is going to price what it think it can get away with.

I think Apple sets the prices first, then they set what minimal storage they can get away with for the set prices.

With other phone manufacturers, prices didn't go up because base storage did.

You are correct that they don't have to increase base price. They could cut costs for production or reduce profit margin. The last one isn't going to happen because Apple is under pressure from investors. The thing is Apple knows how much storage people use on their phones. If they see a large number using less than 64 GB they're not going to increase base storage. Like I said many of my friends use way less than 64 GB.

You don't know what other manufacturers did to absorb the increase. They likely made cuts to something. It would mean about a $50 retail price increase for 128 GB. Not much but still an increase.

I’m going from a 256GB iPhone X to a 64GB iPhone 11. I was going to go for 128GB until I checked my storage usage. I’m using 20GB of my 256, it’s insane how little I’m using and how little space everything takes up these days. Most people really don’t need more than 64GB as base, this isn’t a 16GB base situation.

I’m a very heavy user and I would still have 40GB free if I was using a 64GB. Unless you’re really doing a lot of stuff that uses tons of space I think 256GB is probably overkill on a phone.

I have a 256GB iPad Pro and use all of it but there’s zero point for me to have both and I don’t think I’m in the minority.

but with other manufacturers they have to offer bigger numbers to remain competitive.

Apple are less pressured to release big numbers because they have a USP in iOS.

The other manufacturers will simply make less profit. But if it’s a choice between less profit or no profit, they have to pick less profit. Apple doesn’t need to make that choice because they already make the most profit and consumers cannot get iOS elsewhere

It's possible the 128gb chips over 64gb doesn't cost Apple more. But they still want to use the 64gb on the Pro to make the higher capacity models more enticing. Why you think the 128gb is available for the 11, and not the 11 pro?

I have 86 GB of 256 used. 20 GB are just podcast that I need to delete. About another 25 or so gigabytes are games that I no longer play. In reality I would use about 40 GB if I just deleted the stuff that I absolutely do not use. That’s not saving storage by putting pictures on the cloud or anything like that. Most users don’t take a lot of 4K video and that’s where you need the larger storage sizes. If you don’t take a lot of 4K video you were just literally throwing money away buying storage. I mean it’s your money so you should have a choice but you should not be made to spend it if you don’t have to.

Exactly, I went for the 256GB because it was virtually the same price as the 64 when the X was discontinued last year. I’m glad I did because I saved myself money this year.

The Pros should probably start at a higher base, if nothing else to add something to the fact that they are now called “Pro” iPhones. I, and many other people, will happily take a $50 saving on the iPhone 11 though.

That’s how I see the 11, I’m saving $50 because I’m happy with less storage.
