And there is your reason. Right in front of you. A lot of people don't need more than 64GB. It's really just that simple. If you need more, buy more.
Because he chose to buy more storage than he needed doesn't mean o
There's this wonderful thing in 2019. It's called The Cloud. We store our videos and photos there. LOL. 64gb is fine for a great many people. Ya need more? Buy more.
I agree. Some people would be silly to buy anything less than the 512 GB model while others a perfectly fine with 64 GB. Maybe they don’t shoot a lot of 4K videos, I don’t know but it’s their phone and how they use. They shouldn't be told they’re using their phone in improperly so therefore they have to buy more storage. I really dislike the elitist attitude from some people.

You may backup your iphone to your computer but surely you understand 12 dollars a year on storage is cheaper than paying an extra 100dollars for the non base storage. So yes, that is the beauty of icloud storage

Bottom line is Apple is still getting their money either by you paying more for storage or more for icloud fees. Considering most users are keeping phones 3-5 years now. Paying an extra 50 for 64gb to 128gb evens out with many users now.

Forced to pay? If Apple increase the base storage and keep the same price.
Whats the problem?
The problem is you don’t understand basic economics. You remind me of these people demanding free healthcare thinking that the money is just gonna be printed so they can spend it. If Apple spend extra money on one part that you have to raise the price of the phone or cut something else in the phone. If I need a phone with 64 GB I shouldn’t be forced to buy a phone at a higher price with 128 GB or a phone that’s been cut in some way. Someone suggested removing the charger or putting a cheaper charger since they already have fast chargers. This is not acceptable. If I need a phone with 64 GB I shouldn’t have to pay for 128 GB.

Edited to fix weird double post that my phone did

You lose the synchronisation of your photos across your devices if you don't have your photos in iCloud.

I find it very valuable to have all of my photos synced up across three devices so that I can show someone something regardless of what device I have to hand.

It doesn’t matter if you have more storage you’re still going to need more than the basic iCloud storage plan if you want a back up. Either way I don’t think anyone is arguing discontinuing or disallowing people to buy higher storage options. They definitely need to keep higher storage options available for people that need it. The discussion is removing the lower storage option as a choice. You can still buy your 256 or 512 GB model. No one is trying to tell you you’re not allowed to buy this. What I'm saying is you shouldn't tell others that they’re not allowed to buy a model with less storage.

Exactly. Users should be given the choice of different storage options. I don't want a 128GB option if it's going to cost me more money at the expense of a cheaper 64GB option.

The synchronization is nice but my biggest thing is having a back up. It’s not the best back up as in you should have another back up as well but if I drop my phone in the road and it gets ran over or it just decides to stop working I will still have all my pictures and whatever other settings on the replacement phone

I have an iCloud backup of my devices and a full device backup in iTunes, which itself has a Time Machine backup.

So I'm well covered.

The 128 GB model doesn't "cost more at the expense of the 64 GB model". I’m not sure how your logic goes with that one. That's like saying because car dealers sell base model cars that makes the fully loaded models more expensive LMAO

What I'm saying is if the base option becomes 128GB, but it becomes more expensive at the same time, that is not good for all the people who only need 64GB.

It’s always smart to have a back up with your devices. I thought about getting time machine but never got around to doing it. I think most people with iPhones use iCloud as their sole back up. It’s not the best situation but it’s better than no back up. If you back up with iTunes doesn’t that turn off cloud back up or you could do both? The last time I used iTunes to back up my iPhone was an iPhone 5.

Despite whether 64GB or 128GB.. Most of us would still pay the minimum amount to increase iCloud from 5GB.

Espeically those with multiple devices who keep backups in the cloud

Personally I back up both on the Mac and iCloud.

regarding time machine you should definitely do it.. I always keep an external 500gb SSD for it

Some people can live with 64gb. But this is NOT the typical user case, so shame on Apple for having the Pro lineup start at 64gb. This is nothing but an upsell tactic.

I agree with that. So many people are complaining that the newer iPhones are more expensive. Part of that was poor marketing by Apple with coming up with the new iPhone X as a replacement for the iPhone 7. They should’ve came out with the iPhone XR not call it XR But but just the iPhone like it is now. Then later on come out with the pro or Max whatever they want to call it as a alternate phone that’s upgraded rather than the replacement for the seven. It made it look like the XR was a downgrade from the seven and the X was the replacement

I would say the typical user case is far less than 64GB.

Having different storage options has always been an up-sell tactic. Those who need/want more storage have to pay more for the privilege.

Please cite your source for this is not a typical case. Every friend I know that has an iPhone X or even older iPhones has 64 GB or less. It seems like you’re making up stuff to justify your opinion that people should not be allowed to buy reduce storage. This is just an elitist attitude that doesn’t make sense. Just because someone has the same phone you have with less storage doesn’t devalue your phone. Perhaps you feel you can’t show off your phone to your friends because they might think it's the cheaper one with only 64 GB but that sounds like a problem you have. Perhaps Apple needs to make a special color for the 512 GB model so the elitist people that feel they're better that other people with a cheap 64 GB model can show it off

I think it was clear from the pricing that the iPhone X was a new premium tier above the standard iPhone models (the 8 and 8 Plus that directly replaced the 7 and 7 Plus).

The range is as follows:

iPhone 8 - low end
iPhone XR - mid range
iPhone 11 - high end (this is the only model that would have existed if Apple still did just one phone a year)
iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max - ultra high end.

It's still cheaper to get the base model and add 50gb of iCloud of if you need a little extra. Keeping your iPhone for 5 years would equal a total of $60 in iCloud vs paying an upfront $150 to get to 256gb.

And even if you bought the 256GB model you'd still need the iCloud storage to ensure your photos were synced and your devices backup up. So you'd have paid for the extra on-device storage AND for cloud storage. You might as well save the cash and buy the 64GB model and the cloud storage.

Not really because the iPhone XR did not come out till after the iPhone X. Your choices were the iPhone 8 which felt like an iPhone 7 with a new number and the iPhone X that was significantly more expensive. There was this big outcry that the phone was almost $1000. People felt that they couldn’t upgrade to the eight because it wasn’t really an upgrade unless you had an iPhone 6 in the X was just too expensive. I think a lot of people who bought the X even though it was much more expensive than they wanted to pay would’ve preferred a Phone like the XR. Of course now we know the tiers a little better especially since Apple has dropped the XR name and just called it iPhone.

I have the 256 GB model and pay for iCloud storage just for peace of mind knowing that if I break my phone or I should say when I break my phone I won’t lose my data.

The 8 was the upgrade to the standard iPhone line (7 and 7 Plus), the X was the new tier above the 8.

The 8 had as many improvements in it as the 7 had from the 6S and the 6S from the 6 before it (faster hardware, better cameras, new features (Qi charging)).

The X was a big departure and represented a new tier above the standard iPhone line (hence it was a lot more expensive).

The Xr replaced the iPhone 8 series as the standard iPhone line.

The 11 replaces the Xr as the standard iPhone line.

The XS, XS Max, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are the ultra-premium tier.

I would say the typical user case is far less than 64GB.

My iPad Mini 5, is already using 20gb of storage out of 64gb.
Didn't sync my personal music files to it.
Only installed two games that total to 2.3gb.
No photos or videos taken.
Have 67 apps that are not games.
System storage takes up 6.5gb.
Only music that's installed is from Spotify playlist downloads which takes up 1.48gb. My Spotify playlists are small.
And I just recently got this Mini a couple weeks ago.

So you really think the above is typical for an iPhone user? HELL NO!!!!

I’m not disagreeing that what you’re saying is wrong but I’m saying some people didn’t think of it that way. I had friends that thought the iPhone XR was a downgrade from the iPhone 8. Apple should’ve done a better job marketing the XR and it should’ve came out at the same time as the iPhone X that way when the new iPhone came out people had a choice to upgrade to the new system without paying $1000. Either way both the iPhone X and iPhone XR sold like hotcakes so Apple did a good job marketing them to sell but they could’ve done better at squishing some of the negativity.
