thought i'd share this tidbit of information seeing as we're all friends

you'll recall over the years some people report not being able to access the store minutes after others have placed their order. e.g User 1 is able to access the store and place an order at 8:01 however user 2 still sees the "apple store is down for maintenance" message at 8:05.

People have put this down to the way apple place a CDN (content delivery network) in front of the store and this is only partly true. Apple set a cookie in your browser, this cookie randomly delays entry into the store. It ensures not everyone can hit the store at once. I do not know the exact name of the cookie as it changes slightly each year however if you clear cookies and refresh shortly after 8:01 you should be good to go. The Apple Store app also sets a cookie which can be removed in Settings > Safari. hope this helps.

interesting to know, would selecting the safari option to block all cookies on my iPhone help?

Got any proof of this cookies existence (like a thread discussing it) or a previous name thats been used for it?

Thank you for that information, should help us all.

By deleted the cookies from safari on settings does that delete it from the apple store app?

Some sites require cookies to function properly. It’s best to just delete your cookies and try accessing. Chrome/Firefox have plenty of addons that clear cookies and other cached data and the touch of a button

You can also open a private browsing session which would have the same effect for the first request post 8.01.

One thing to note is they you will likely be logged out of the store (if you could even be logged in in the first place!) if all cookies are removed

In previous years I've tried this and still been stuck behind the CDN gate so I'm very sceptical of this cookie advice.

Whilst I can’t vouch for what Apple do it is common practise on high volume sites to ‘throttle’ traffic in this way. It’s a technique I’ve used in my work for high volume spikes on sites

Agree that in the past I’ve removed cookies, tried in ‘clean’ devices etc and see no effect. You just don’t know what tricks people will implement. It’s only going to help if you do do it

May actually be a hinderance if you have to start logging back in etc when you finally get to the store page.

Just had this from Carphone Warehouse - interesting they’re taking deposits before pre-orders go live. No idea if it guarantees you anything, might I’ve them a call and find out.

Thought that too but given the store would be offline you can’t actually log in? Which would mean an additional click if your browser remembers your username and password

Very much doubt it guarantees anything. More likely CPW trying to hook you in with a sweetener so if they’re late you hang on anyway

I doubt that gives you anything in regards to getting the phone sooner. Interesting if anyone you (or they) can find those t&c’s it mentions

There is info on the CPW website - though not totally clear!. From what I can gather, you pay the £25 to get £25 off the handset cost when ordering - so effectively are getting £50 credit for £25, which you can then use WHEN you pre-order the phone. So this is not a reservation, but rather just a way of incentivising people to pre-order with them on 27th. I assume they will give some sort of voucher code to redeem when ordering on 27th online or over phone.

In relation to stock, I bet no network or reseller has any idea of how much stock they will get or when! On previous launches Ive been told by stores that they literally find out when it arrives (or doesn't arrive!).

Yup no mention of any preference of stock going down this route.

One thing that site has done is open the colour debate again!

The space grey seems to look a lot lighter which I like. I was set one a white/silver one until now.

Wish there were more ‘real’ pictures or videos of the colour options. The stuff I saw from after the keynote doesn’t really help

Just gave carphone warehouse a call and they confirmed this deposit guarantees you a Iphone X for launch and that you deposit now and someone calls you next friday for the remainder of the payment.

Unfortunately this only applies to contract so I was unable to order. Whoever is going on contract this is a perfect opportunity to guarantee the Iphone X.

Sorry if this has already been covered but thought I’d share.

Heard the process for those getting an X who are already on the iPhone Upgrade programme will be much smoother.

Stores will giver priority to IUP users and you’ll be able to place a ‘reservation’ to upgrade even if they’re not in stock at the store and when they become available, you’ll be contacted to come into store and upgrade. This would save having to check store stock daily to make an appointment.

Not sure what this means for getting one on day 1 and if we’ll get priory for that but does seem easier overall.

Apple employees in the store have had training for this.

I hope this is the case, because I don't want to be doing what I did to get the 7 plus: checking daily at 8am and again mid morning and hoping for a reservation. I managed to get one about a week after launch but what a pain!

It would be great if you can apply for a new one and have  contact you to go in to upgrade! As long as it's not in 2018 ;)

Just signed up with CPW. Apparently you have to wait for the outbound team to call you on Friday to continue with pre-order. This is after them taking £25 from your account -.-

Not sure if this is USA only and it’s a little unclear on what it means but

But no price tariffs available?
