If that really is how people view things then no wonder so many people are up to their neck in debt.
You base things on the now not what might happen in the future after all. Even the upgrade program people shouldn’t be doing it unless they think they can afford it. Doubt people who are buying this phone would if they can’t afford it.

Having been in bad debt in the past, and learned my lesson the hard way, I know more than most that it's DEFINITELY the case that some people will buy this who can't afford it in the long term. They shouldn't but they do. Luckily I've learned not to do that anymore and spending lots of money per month might be nothing for some people but for others im sure there are those who spend more than they should. But equally, everyone is free to spend their money (or the bank's money) their own way!

Sorry guys I've been away for a few weeks so haven't been able to keep up with the posts on here!

Quick q - for those already on the iUP, what is supposedly the quickest route of reservation on Friday? I'm assuming it's opening the Apple Store app and going to Account > iPhone Upgrade Programme and following the steps there?

Cheers,

Dan

Hi all,

am I wrong to assume that bookings for iUP will open on 3rd of November and not on pre-order date? So on Friday 27th you'll only be able to buy it and have it delivered or pick up in store (without iUP option though).

I always thought that iUP is available for same day pick up. Am I understanding something wrong?

Apple should've added support for Apple Pay on iPhone 5S  I mean, yes it doesnt have NFC, but at least I should be able to use it within apps!

Here are the steps I have to go through on Friday:

* Open Apple Store app (takes 7 seconds)
* Go to favs and select my model (takes 7 seconds)
* Add to bag and then go to bag (3-4 seconds)
* Checkout (2-3 seconds)
* But wait, I now need to enter my Apple ID and password (takes 5 seconds)
* Finally checkout (2-3 seconds)

I've heard that Apple may send some verification PIN to device, waiting for it to arrive then entering it = 5-10 seconds or even more.

So it'll take me at least 30-45 seconds to go through the whole checkout process! Maybe more if there are some issues.

With the news that there will be walk-in stock I would not worry. I'm sure if you get in within the first few minutes it will be fine.

Yeah, if my pre order delivery is Nov 3rd then its ok, otherwise I'll be trying to get it from other retailers or Apple Store(s) in London on Nov 3rd and cancel my pre order.

So when do stocks arrive at Apple Stores for pickup? I guess I can wake up early morning, go to the iUP website on Nov 3rd, and reserve a unit there? Or do I have to go to the normal Apple Store website to do it?

IUP reservations will be this Friday too.

Apple making this announcement and encouraging people to get their early all feels a little cheap to me... they want to encourage long queues and all the fanfare when all the news and noise suggests they’re be so little stock around. You’re going to need to be one of the first in the queue to get one!

Im probably going to get this one as it looks quite sleek and needs to look half decent in our bedroom, might get a different one for my office though

Edit: actually I meant the silver one: https://www.mobilefun.co.uk/satechi-portable-universal-qi-fast-wireless-charging-pad-silver-65146

I’m not putting an aluminium edged charging plate anywhere near the glass back of an iPhone. I like the colour but I want a softer surface. And something with some grip - glass on glass/plastic and it’ll probably slide off overnight

good point, you'd think a sapphire glass back would be able to cope with it but maybe not. It does have a rubber area but it's not big I admit. Need to look for something similar

Agree. I’m not a fan of IUP and IP. It’s apple’s ways of justifying their ever increasing prices and making it feel like they’re doing us a favour allowing us to upgrade yearly.

Who would have considered taking out a bank loan to buy a phone if it wasn’t called IUP or IP!?

Does anyone know if it will work through the Apple Silicon cases?
Sorry I’ve only got the Apple leather case, but it works fine through that.

I'm sure there's someone, probably people who are that desperate for the newest that that is more important than the cost.

For potential walk-ins, in case of failure to preorder... I work in the City so Covent Garden is my nearest store - could get there early but queues already likely to be big. Would it be better to try some operator stores/carphone warehouses for SIM free handsets? Not opposed to signing up for a contract- am out of my VF SIM only contract now, but they all look like they’ll be expensive.

They wouldn’t encourage queuing if they only had ten per store. And if they had limited stock they should inform the queue the night before to stop people queuing that have no chance. While they may want queues for press, they really don’t want to trick people into queuing that won’t then be able to get a phone - that’ll backfire massively on them

If you go down this route, bear in mind that even if you pay fully upfront, iPhones from Carphone Warehouse and PC World and some other places will lock to the network of the first SIM card used.

Hmm. Although not an issue for me particularly, it would mean I stick with VF for my own use. Main issue would be selling on if I switch to an X2 next year. Worth bearing in mind, thanks. But my impatience may get the better of me..

I remember seeing that phones brought from CPW are no longer locked to the first sim you put in.

No worries, but every time I see a new poll thread I can’t help but think of Brenda in Bristol

God that woman made me mad!!

Do we have any coupon codes for MusicMagpie / EnviroFone etc?

Also, how much of a hit does taking iUP make to your credit score? I have good credit at the moment, and am planning on borrowing to put a house extension on soon, but was slightly worried that this would appear as a black mark on my file?

EXTRA5 on envirophone for 5% extra on trade in price at 'checkout'.

Lol I love how optimistic everything in this thread is.

I expect that there will be NO launch day stock at all in Europe. If they have only made 2-3 million in total I get the feeling it will be sent to the US and China (as those are the biggest markets).

I think a early pre-order will be lucky to get 2-3 weeks for delivery. And that will be the soonest Apple will ship to anyone in Europe.

And even in the US I expect if your not on in the first minute you will be waiting the same period of time.

There will be some allocated stock for the UK - likely not a lot but there will be some. Also packaging (and the info printed on the back of the phone) varies between countries so

(That response below is funny... "the upgrade is supposed to be free" - er, no, you just thought is was.)

That is hilarious!!

Interesting story about in store stock. Wonder if they get rid of in store pickup because of this. I was under the assumption that in store pickup replaced walk-ins in the last couple of years. Don’t think I could face queuing. Then again queing through the night while playing Mario Odyssey on my Switch might be kinda fun ;)

I thought they were trying to deter / stop queuing for walkin's also

This is no longer the case. We had a bit of a debate about 200 pages back

CPW have confirmed they no longer lock iPhones to the first sim.

damn I wish I was in a smaller city than London, I mean surely I can maybe go to Bath and get it from the Apple Store there? lol
