Let's be clear: in Apple speak "walk-in stock" means stock that is available on a first come, first served basis for people who turn up on the day, without a reservation.

Those queues you saw were for people with reservations, e.g. through an up-front payment using the 'collect in-store' option when ordering, or through the iPhone Upgrade Programme.

Last year, Apple put out a statement a few days before launch - note that this means after pre-orders - saying there would be no walk-in stock for any Jet Black or Plus models of the iPhone 7.

That Apple is saying there will be walk-in stock for the X, and that they are saying this before pre-orders even begin, is a very positive sign.

Disagree.

It’s there way of making the lack of stock online look better. They will hold pre-order stock for stores. And it will still be limited.

They are mind fing you...

Reading previous pre order threads on here, some didn’t get the App Store app up until 8:09, yet some had 8:03 how can it vary so much?

Okay so I just spoke to a rep from Three. And they assured me that they’d be getting a significant amount of stock for iPhone X and it should be a breeze to get it from them (but then this could be a really nicely timed sales pitch), however, at the moment it has to be on a contract, but they did say it’s unlocked. I asked about paying it off, they said it should be fine but more details after 27th.

So yeah I guess if Apple store failed you, try three. The stock shortage news maybe blown out of proportions or it could be a marketing strategy all together.

Keep refreshing from 8:00 am till like 8:30. If it’s still down at 8:30, servers blew up big time. Haha

Go to the kitchen cupboard, grab the salt, take a pinch.

Will o2/Three allow me to have the phone delivered to my place of work does anybody know?

Gonna be out all day and there will be nobody at home etc.

Carriers are notoriously bad for promising stock and not delivering.. literally.
They’ll happily take your money for a pre order, promise launch day stock and then fail.

Roger that, it’s been almost 10 years since I was last on a contract, it’s been contractless phones and loving it. Okay well, I guess Apple Pay it is.

I’m not putting an aluminium edged charging plate anywhere near the glass back of an iPhone. I like the colour but I want a softer surface. And something with some grip - glass on glass/plastic and it’ll probably slide off overnight

Samsung’s newest fast charger is around £50 and is a soft finish flat charger that converts into a stand if you don’t mind paying a little extra.

Wow didnt know they sold sim free thanks for the info. Another website to try :)

While Three sell phones sim free (or more accurately full price on PAYG) they don’t do so when a new phone launches. It’s normally only when stock is readily available so I’d doubt you’d be finding an X sim free from Three at launch.

Guys come on be serious...

Now Apple have said there will be stock in stores - they are encouraging queues - this is clearly because online orders will be delayed. And they want to have publicity and have people think they can get the phone in store.

The problem is now you will see the return of scalpers - people queuing up days in advance to sell it on at a profit.

You will have to turn up the day before to stand a chance of picking up a phone on the day; even then I think unless your the first 10 in line you might miss out. I really think stock will be beyond limited. We have never had an iPhone with so LITTLE stock on launch.

I will pre-order - and expect a delay. I might try ordering from a network as well - just to see if I can get one a second way - but I think 99% of people on this site will be disappointed.

I expect after launch day we will return to online reservations with limited stock everyday - so at least those of us who know how to work the online system have a chance.

Wouldn’t this be basically the opposite of how Apple have gone with retail in the past - encouraging online preorders and use of the app rather than queuing up?

Yes. It is the opposite but it makes sense. Not enough stock online and no stock in stores makes apple look terrible.

Happy customers outside the stores - even if it’s a limited number looks good and the media will ignore the online losers who pre-ordered.

It makes perfect sense. Rather than look bad in every way they distract with store stock. But it won’t be enough either way.

Encouraging long queues to only then frustrate most people is not good marketing. They wouldn’t say they have walk in stock if they only have a handful per store

Lol How is frustrated customers who queued and cant get a phone bad publicity? It’s great. To everyone they have hope of getting one in store and those that do have it will take all the limelight and everyone else will be back the next day, and the day after that.

It’s simply down to transferring the available stock to the stores so they have happy customers instead of it all being pre-order and no one getting it and no queues.

You may not believe me or accept it - but we KNOW there is limited stock. It isn’t suddenly available with 10 times the stock... the analysts were right about the delayed release and they are right about this.

I know what I am saying is not what anyone wants to hear - and I hope I am wrong but lets be realistic.

I’m going to do an apple pre-order and a network upgrade and see if either turn up on the 3rd. But I suspect neither will.

Couple of questions when is blue water open again.

An how does queueing at Bromley work? Is the shopping centre open all night or do people queue outside the shopping centre

Bluewater is still closed, Bromley centre is closed and from what I've been told they have multiple doors. So queuing outside might be a challenge.

How about Lakeside?
[doublepost=1508875468][/doublepost]Anyone tempted to queue now the news of walk in stock available in stores?

actually quite like this stand in a weird kind of way, reviews are mixed but might give it a try. Thanks

Yes you can

How? I don't see an option for SIM free on their website. When I go to the Plans page, it shows me that I can buy it on a PAYG plan, so I pay full amount upfront, but I have to get a PAYG SIM (£10 min).

Is that what you're referring to as 'SIM Free'? Or am I missing something?

Spoke with my Business account manager in 3, he told me they will be getting stock for Launch day, he said they should be getting a decent amount of stock, good thing is, pre orders are at 9 so if you fail on apple.co.uk your next stop could be 3.

I personally already have myself 1 Silver 64GB reserved, Ill be trying to get another for family on friday.

Good Luck everyone.
O2 won’t but not sure about 3

3 will but only as a upgrade. Any first time orders will be to the home address

Apple definitely said no Day 1 stock last year.

Were thy successful in their strategy?

Go to the kitchen cupboard, grab the salt, take a pinch.

A large pinch?

.

Hmmm don't mind the gold one but it looks like using it as a stand will mean the phone is tilted more than I would prefer.

Still tempted by the IUP route but I don’t think I can... my credit isn’t great to be honest and if it’s more difficult than a mobile contract, I would die of embarrassment if it got rejected at the Apple store #firstworldproblems

Genuine question, not trying to start a flame war but I must be missing something with regards to the iUp program, why is it so popular seemingly instead of just buying outright and selling later like I normally do. Is there a financial benefit that makes getting a credit search and credit account beneficial?

£1000+ is a lot of money and iPhone ownership has been getting exponentially more expensive over the last five years. You also have the benefit of not having to sell your old phone which for a lot of people is a chore.

(Personally I've never gone for the iUP but I can see the appeal and may try it this year if I fail to pre-order for launch day delivery.)

I understand but you’re still paying the same amount for the phone right? And recouping a similar if not less amount when trading it in vs selling privately?
