I didn't think they could? Biometric authentication is delivered by the phone by whatever method is available to it - FaceID or TouchID, it doesn't distinguish and neither does the app. So either biometric authentication is on or off?

At least that's what I've read and heard. I know there was a lot of misinformation about this posted on places like this when the phone was announced, but Apple have been pretty consistent about it from the start I thought?
That’s my understanding as well

hey guys, i havent been keeping up to date with the thread. Are UK orders shipping yet? Mines been preparing for dispatch for the past few days but delivery date says 3rd

What's the practical benefit/application of this if biometric authentication is more secure than passwords?

Personally I wouldn’t write out Face ID out of any of the apps I’m involved with.

Although as mentioned earlier in the thread I could see a use case in terms of banks. If twins/lookalikes can fool the system (even in a small percentage) it could be useful not to use it and rely on older authentication methods that are more secure. Remember banks don’t tend to just use passwords, they use passwords along with a code generated from a small device where you must use your bank card and PIN to identify yourself. Clunky but secure.

Mine is due Nov 13-20, but might try my luck with John Lewis in the meantime.

The app is great - I've a 30 character password....the app doesn't accept more than 20 characters o_O

8am on Friday - not yet...

Orders are live for me using the app, though i've not tried to do so as I have an apple store order.

Edit: I see, it just gets caught in a spin when I click 'buy now'.
Hope you strike some luck ordering one eventually.

I went for this one - ordered on 24th October, arrived yesterday.. First impressions are ok, but I'm not sure about the glass covering the FaceID area. Will have to see whether it affects things. But it has a rear protector so if I choose to go without a case, the rear protector may help protect against scratches etc.
That was my thinking too. I think I’ll just put it straight on the phone out of the box and see if FaceID/Camera seems any different to the YouTube reviews out now. I don’t like the screen protectors with the notch cut out completely, think they’ll look weird.

Has anyone else issues with using Apple Pay after the declined transactions for iPhone order?

I updated through the phone the payment details, so order is fine, but all transactions from Apple Pay (iPhone and watch) are getting declined. Card is working fine though.

Yes. My payment cleared without a problem but since then by card’s been declined everytime. Will call them today probably.

So by the fact that mine hasn’t dispatched yet and it’s supposedly arriving on Friday I guess it’s already in the UK.

Which means it’s probably one of the first ones off the production line and will have all kinds of defects!
I think the Apple 3rd Nov deliveries have shipped from China but have not been trackable. I as understand it, Preparing for shipment is flagged when your address label is printed i.e. you can't edit a printed label. This happened on Friday, with the labels being stuck on boxed iPhones in China and were then shipped in bulk. We will see dispatched when they are scanned in Hinckley, likely tomorrow. We can check the production dates using the serial number checker, but I suspect ours were manufactured after the ones available for pick up in stores.

Anyone know when apple onine orderes for the 3rd will be despatched? Today or tomorrow?
Tomorrow.

Based on past years, you'll get a dispatch notification tomorrow morning if it's gunna be shipped by UKMail, afternoon if it's gunna be DPD, or evening if it's UPS.

I think I’ve managed to prove that the CPW support don’t have a clue when theirs will be delivered

For those who have ordered(not reserved) for collection from store - do you expect to have a long wait time? I had issues with the app recognising my address so decided on collection from Regent street store. Really hope i won't have to wait around too much given I have already paid for the device.

When I got my six, I was in and out in 5 minutes - they asked if I wanted help setting it up, but didn't want that!

I can understand the frustration people have with ordering from a carrier though. They don't want to be honest and say it's likely you won't get one, as people will just go elsewhere, and they don't want to upset Apple by telling it like it is as they fear not being part of the next launch. Also, generally comms around orders are poor from most carriers.

The current bank apps I use ask if you have more than one person enrolled on the device to use Touch ID before it enables it, I'm sure they could also ask if you have an identical twin for face ID. If you lie for either then liability is moved to you. (If you have someone else with their fingers enrolled and you tell the app you do it won't enable Touch ID)

That thread is going to get more testy come Friday lol

Just hope I get my dispatched soon otherwise I will worry lol

Mine still says 3rd for delivery, but we will see. That thread will get really lively if we all start getting dispatch notifications and others dont. What is your name on the forum?

Having worked in security with many of my customers being banks, I can assure you that with the latest penalties and negative press that would follow, and with the current regulations getting stricter and stricter all the time, with many more regulations like GDPR coming into effect, if the bank's risk assessments or maturity models are negatively affected by something like FaceID, it won't matter that 99.7% of the population will be inconvenienced, they will remove it. It's up to the banks to do this assessment and see where it puts them. Certainly in the short term I can see some banks removing it first and then adding it back in later if necessary
