If there is limited stock it makes me think carriers will be left behind and the Apple online orders will come first.

Buying online: If you can order online as soon as it goes live, it should come on release day. I did that with my iPhone 6 Plus and 5S - the key is to make sure you're prepped to be in and out with your purchase (smash and grab :p). A few days before, make sure you have express checkout enabled and ensure your card details are properly set-up before it goes live. It's also best to inform your credit card provider, if you're using one, that you intend to make a purchase from Apple so they don't block any purchases at that crucial moment. Also do your research first and make your mind up as to what colour and size iPhone you want - no time to flick through deciding on a colour!

Finally, don't use the Apple website and only keep it as a backup in the background - use the Apple Store iOS app instead - much faster, easier and quicker to make a purchase. As soon as pre-orders goes live, click on iPhone > pick colour and size > click "Buy Now" (assuming you have Express checkout enabled) > review and confirm. The quicker you are, the more likely you'd get it on release day - it can be a matter of seconds which determines what day you'll get it. Hope that helps.

You forget to mention using Apple Pay on the Apple Store IOS app, isn't that quicker than using express checkout?

I went to one of the London stores yesterday and was speaking to a staff member about the upgrade programme. He says the only way to use the upgrade programme when ordering online is if the store has stock of that iPhone - there is now way to preorder using it. If you want to guarantee an early ship date you will have to buy the phone outright then take it in to the store and put it on the upgrade programme. Seems completely counter intuitive to me that there is no way of placing a preorder via the upgrade programme. As we all know from previous years the stores hardly ever get stock for the 1st few months and you have to constantly check, Feel a but mugged off by the whole system if thats the case. Hoping it was an ill informed staff member and the reality is you can preorder, I know in the US you can do it online from this year so here's hoping!

The whole point of being on the program is so we don't have to buy it outright though.... Apple do know how to make it hard for people to buy their products don't they...?

I guess we'll truly know what the score is after Tuesday. If the option is there to reserve a phone to a store come pre-order day, I'll do that and then upgrade at that point.

I think its almost a certain that it will be released no later than october it will be the supply of the iphone 8 that will be the stumbling block for many of us but i think we all expect that now from previous launches.

is it part of apples agenda to spread these stock shortages rumours ahead of the launch so we all pre order or are these shortages now just part and parcel of a new iphone launch.

Given last years jet black 7+ started pushing out from release day, to 3-7 days to weeks all within a matter of minutes from pre orders starting I can see if being far worse this time. If there is any launch day stock it will go within minutes and dates will push out in no time. I’ll be happy to get my order in within the first 10 minutes or as soon as the damn app or site lets me in! Then I’ll kick back and watch in envy at the lucky ones who may get theirs day 1

Yeah there are "supply shortage" rumours every year, and I've managed to get my pre-order in for launch day every year no problem. Personally I think the 8 will launch at the same time as the 7S, just probably in limited supply (as usual). We've also seen many part leaks for the 8 right? A 3 month delay would be very strange.

It won't be called the 8? I'm hoping it will be called the Edition, I like that name.

No, of course it won't be. That was always the least likely name.

The rumoured price of OLED iPhone, £949/969/999 can be said is "nearly" £1000.

Possibly £999, £1299, £1499 I wouldn't be surprised. Apple will ensure they well and truly rip consumers off with this device, and nobody should expect anything less from Apple.

I find it interesting that some of those who comment negatively on the likely cost of the iPhone Edition would happily pay several thousand pounds more than I would on a new car. I go for a car in the £10K sector, yet they find it odd I might be willing to pay just a few hundred pounds more than they would on a new phone which I use multiple times a day.

Ripping people off? How is it doing that if people know the price and are willing to pay it?

Because you’re being ripped off because the device is massively over priced? That’s the definition of being ripped off...

In your opinion it may be over priced but that is far from fact. Being ripped off often involves not knowing about about it, after Tuesday's keynote people will have a choice, buy a new iPhone or don't, no one is being forced to buy one!

Just because someone willingly buys something, does not mean they're not being ripped off. I see that silly argument around too often these days. You can willingly overpay for something, but you're still being ripped off.

Without evidence that doesn't stand up, your trying to tell people that we are being ripped off for something that hasn't even been announced, not only that but if people are happy to pay it then they aren't being ripped off because they are willingly paying the price and therefore think it's worth it. Maybe you think the technology isn't worth the price? I fail to see how you can know that people are being ripped off by Apple charging a higher price for the next iPhone?

I don't remember saying that! We can't know what's value for money until Apple announce and even then it's down to the individual to determine what they think is value for money!

Editi: I see what you did there ;)

Have to admit, this is the first time that I am having genuine reservations about upgrading.

I appreciate that it's all down to individual opinions/thoughts on the true worth of a device. Personally, I always buy outright from Apple, and it's not that I can't afford to upgrade if the device is ~£1k, but for the first time ever I'm genuinely sat thinking, for me anyway, that the price has potentially reached the point of being beyond its true worth.

I fully expect comments of "Fine, jog on, all the more for us then!" :)

If the rumoured pricing turns out to be as expected, I can't help but wonder if Apple are trying to re-introduce an element of exclusivity to the iPhone i.e. by pushing higher price and lower volume of sales? I mean, at one time, not many folk had iPhones, but these days everybody and their dog has one.
