Upgrading from a regular 7. I went 8 Plus 256gb on the Upgrade Program. Not sure about the Plus size so will try it and if it's too unwieldy then I'll return it within 14 Days.

I do feel the 8 Plus is a bit of a compromise compared to the X due to the screen and cameras, but also better in some ways by Touch ID, and the UI, etc all being figured out. Thoughts?

if you are ok with the larger size/weight, then its a good phone. Larger screen size for 16:9 video (5.5" vs effective 5.15" on the X), wider in portrait mode for reading websites, touchID maybe preferred as its a known quantity (i.e pretty much perfect for the two years I've had a 6s or 6s+) vs possible collywobbles over FaceID (but I'm sure its fine)

Personally I'd go for an X over a large capacity 8+ but thats mainly because I had a 6s+ for almost a year and decided the size/weight wasn't for me. Was too bulky to carry around in my pockets - particularly noticable when I started a new job and was walking a lot. But YMMV of course.

....so now that we have time slots for collection of our phones - does this mean we don;t have to get there early and queue up?!
Last time I did this there were two queues, one for people with reservations and one for people without. I arrived about 10 mins before my slot and joined the queue, think it took about 35 mins total including queuing.

Last year you couldn't reserve to pick up in store with no upfront payment until they were actually released. Could't do it on pre-order.
+1

come next friday, or saturday I think there will be a reserve and collect option come up.. but given there seems to be plenty of stock, it might be easy to just walk in and buy!

Is anyone upgrading from the 7 plus to 8 plus? Just curious if anyone thinks it's worth it?

I've done that. A couple of reasons:

  • Wanted the matte black finish a year ago, but wasn't available for day 1, so ended up with silver
  • New warranty
  • Incremental camera upgrades
  • Don't like the X design
  • Depreciation of my 7 Plus will have worsened in a year, and new hardware will inevitably go up in price again

I can't find a link anywhere to 'Reserve' the phone for in store pick up unless you select the iUP.

Yup. Seems as though it’s not possible to reserve without paying unless you’re an iUP customer, this year.

Ah. I’m now remembering that this wasn’t possible until after release last year.

Bank blocked my transaction . Spoken to them and have authorised it, but am not sure what I need to do with Apple. Really don't want to have my shipment date slip...

it won't. Apple will try again and then only take full payment the they dispatch the phone, so if you are getting yours for next friday, then mid next week the full charge will be made.

Still plenty of stock at my local. I’m utterly shocked. Either they’ve made far more units, or their sales are down massively.

Yup, because

Concerns about X designs
8 Plus has all the good bits from the X minus the bits I find questionable
If I did nothing, my 7 Plus would be worth significantly less next year
If I get the 8 Plus, it's a "free" upgrade and next year I have more options to recoup costs with a newer device.
I just like the Plus form factor, including the more sensible screen aspect ratio.

Bank blocked my payment too, instead of contacting my bank I placed another order using PayPal and changed to in-store collection instead. Decided I'd rather go there than wait around at home all day

...that's not true.

Many on here, including myself, have reserved 'without paying'. I am NOT currently on IUP and yet I have indeed reserved without paying, for collection in-store.....

I imagine it's most likely the latter. Whilst I'm sure they will have sold a fair chunk of 8/8+ phones I imagine the majority of people will buy the X and ignore the price. I personally would've bought it had it been £100 cheaper but my personal stance is I'm not paying more than my MacBook for an iPhone. At least not yet anyway! I have no doubt the X will be an amazing device but the price and the way they've implemented the camera bar/notch with the screen doesn't sit right with me. That being said I'll still be reading and looking at posts and pictures when people receive them!

Contract prices for the X on EE are as I expected a little bit on the expensive side and Vodafone just say starting price at £68 so looks like I will be going the apple finance route + sim only route
