There's lots of confusion on here.....

The way I read things, is thus:

  • Pre-Orders (non IUp or IP) are made on the website/app. These are NOT collectible in store - they are shipped to your address. You are charged once the phone is shipped.
  • Pre-Order (IUP and IP) are made on the website/app. These ARE collectible in store - they are are NOT shipped and you are NOT charged beforehand for the phone. When you go to collect, you THEN decide if you want IUP or IP and pay accordingly (£69 up front + monthly cost every month.
It makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever, why Apple would charge you beforehand, the full price for the handset if you opt for IUP or IP. These programs are for spreading out the cost of the phone - why would they charge you full price before you go and collect???

..outright iPhones from Apple are unlocked.

There is a lot of confusion but I don't think that you are helping by stating your opinions / hopes as fact when they do not seem to be so given other people's experiences.

Pre-Orders (non IUp or IP) are made on the website/app. - These ARE collectable in store if you select the collect in store option. You will 'probably' be charged automatically the full amount before you pick the item up on launch day or when they are despatched for delivery.

Pre-Order (IUP and IP) are made on the website/app. - You will definitely not be charged beforehand for the phone but you MAY NOT be able to change your order from IUP to IP when you arrive at the store.

...I was getting a similar error trying to do something else in the app this morning - try force closing and re-opening it again.

Already tried that, still getting the same error...
“Normal” reservation for in store pick up is working fine, but from what I’m reading in here I can’t do that, and when picking the phone up join the Upgrade Program?

Definitely. This is a quote from an article in Tech Crunch:

"Like the iPad Pro before it, the new iPhones actually support faster charging rates than their provided charging dongles can provide; using Apple’s 29-watt USB-C charger (the one which ships with the MacBook) and a USB-C to Lighting cable will help you top up your device much faster. You can also use a 61 or 87-watt charger, if you happen to have one of those from the purchase of a new 13 or 15-inch MacBook Pro."

Can you do something similar with a MacBook Air magsafe charger? Is there an adapter that goes from magsafe to lightning?

If you new customer on the program, small
Print suggests it's just the day you pick. That's why I can't do it as can't get to store on the Friday.

If you existing customer you can choose a day. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes!!! Thank you - just checked with the iPhone 8 and I could choose a slot from Friday to the following Wednesday. Excellent. That'll be a taxi to the Trafford Centre from the airport then

there is no official way on apples site or app to reserve a phone for the iPhone payments plan. currently you can

* buy outright and collect from a store or get delivered
* use PayPal credit online and pay 15%APR and the still get it delivered or collect in store.
* sign up to IUP - comments here suggest that people have done this last year and apple changed their tune to stop these IUP reservations being changed to the payments plan or people buying outright. there's nothing official to confirm one way or there other what apple would do this year

on launch day on the 22nd and after, you will have the option to reserve a phone and pick up and pay in store. at this point you could pay outright, IUP or payments plan

There appears to be a level of conjecture here. Other people have stated that they have 'heard' that you can't in fact change your mind and pay for the phone outright once you get to the store and others have stated that you can't change from iUP to IP once you have reserved through iUP. I guess we will find out on launch day!

It would make things a lot easier if Apple were actually clear about all of these different payment options. I even went to my local store a couple of weeks ago to try and preempt all of this and gain a clear picture of how to get the phone on launch day using IP but no one in the store could tell me. Great.

I changed from IUP to IP instore last year. It is just a reservation - if you really wanted you could pay outright on arrival which I saw someone do who didn't pass or have the right ID for the credit checks.

____

I am waiting for X but I notice that even now I can still reserve what would have been my preferred model (256bg 8+) for pick up on the 22nd in the Edinburgh store! And in fact most other models too. This worries me that lots of people are therefore waiting for the X.

In other news amongst mild panic and haste this morning I managed to order 5 (YES 5) Apple Watches!! Was just meant to be ordering 1x38mm and 1 x 42mm. Long story which I shan't bore you all with (involved ordering on app and browser at same time) but all surplus orders now cancelled and just the correct 2 on order now though the delivery had slipped on the 42mm by the time I got that order placed!

As it happens it works out okay. I get the 38mm next week (22nd) and then the 42mm between the 9 and 16 October. If I am happy with the 38mm I can just cancel the 42mm without any hassle of return. Also getting delivered to my work which much as I like a store pick up will be much more convenient next week.

Roll on the 22nd when we can all start playing with our new toys :)

I’m ordering the X, ideally through the Upgrade Program, but had a try now with the 8 to see how it worked, but couldn’t actually do it...

Is this happening to anyone else?

No - worked fine for me, all the way to being able to choose a slot for collection.

Would only show the 22nd for me, how do you change the actual day?

So showing from the poll most of us aren’t as “poor” as we make out to be hey ;)

most people on here are all sucked into the apple eco system and typically early adopters.. its just the outrage at the price (more the starting at 64GB as the £999 price was well rumoured).

80% of apple's typical customer base probably don't even know a new iPhone is out today until they watch the news later

You could get a phone from apple, a cheap sim only contract, wipe you a*se with a £5 note once week, and still be saving money vs EE.

The network deals are all stupidly overpriced for the 8+ 256GB even with their cheapest plans

Three 24 months, 500Mb Data 300 minutes, unlimited texts, no applecare+: £1467
EE 24 months 5GB Data unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, no applecare+: £1621
Vodaphone 24 months 1Gb Data unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, no applecare+: £1494
O2 24 months 1Gb Data unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, no applecare+: £1461

Apple IUP with 24 months of a £5 a month sim only contract (and applecare+) £1218
Apple 1P with 24 months of a £5 a month sim only contract no applecare+ £1000

It wasn't my intention of stating my opinion as 'fact' and discounting everybody else's, so apologies if that's how I came across. What I posted was how I understood things so if this is wholly incorrect, I'm happy to be corrected....

It is possible to buy magsafe to lightning adapters but I doubt that would achieve fast charging. Isn't it the power brick that is the important part of the equation here?

I'm taking a stab in the dark here but maybe you could fast charge by connecting a USB to Lightning cable to your MacBook Air's power brick which I think is rated at 45w. I'm no expert but I can't see why that wouldn't work if the more powerful MacBook Pro bricks and the less powerful MacBook bricks work.

Edit: Sorry, thinking that through I don't think that is possible after all because of the physical output lead from the MacBook Air power brick. Sorry again.

The MBA power brick does not have a USB connection on it, the cable is hard wired in.

The way it reads, 7.5w is the fast wireless charging
current Qi standard fast charge supports 15w but I'm sure I read that the 8/X won't support the latest standard. Apple's site for the Belkin adapter states:

Fast Wireless Charging*
Experience wireless charging using the Qi wireless standard, which delivers up to 7.5W to your iPhone.
* Fast wireless charging is enabled with a free software update coming later this year.

so even after this software update, the 'fast' charger is still half the power of the current Qi 15w standard.

The fast charge stated by apple, 50% in 30 minutes is caveated by

* Testing conducted by Apple in August 2017 using preproduction iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus units and software and accessory Apple USB-C Power Adapters (29W Model A1540, 61W Model A1718, 87W Model A1719). Fast-charge testing conducted with drained iPhone units. Charge time varies with environmental factors; actual results will vary.

so to get the fastest charge you need the 29w and above adapters and appropriate lighting cable!

the wireless charging speed will be marginally faster than the block you get with the phone when the do the 'software update' to 7.5w

No - worked fine for me, all the way to being able to choose a slot for collection.

Still not working for me... will try on the laptop when back home later on.
So we’re still unsure if it is possible to make a “normal” reservation for in store pickup, and then choose to join the Upgrade Program at the time?
