Heard from the US people that it would be possible to buy the phone full price online (better chance of launch day stock) then go to an Apple Store and ask them to refund it, then put you on iUP with the phone they just refunded.

I have a feeling the staff at UK Apple Stores would refuse to do this, what you reckon guys?

What’s the advantage of doing iUp if you’ve got the funds to buy outright?

So, come next year when there's a new phone out, I won't have to go about selling the phone on eBay or getting low value for it at CEX or Envirophone. I'll just hand it back to Apple and get a new iUP phone. And I'll have spent circa 650 on the X rather than 999.

I could buy the iPhone 8 right now. It’s still in stock, mocking my inability to pull the trigger. But I need to somehow find the strength to wait and see what the Pixel 2 is gonna be like. 17 more days of torture. Argh! Can I resist the temptation for that long? I don’t know. I need more reliable Pixel 2 leaks to decide. Hope there’s some next week.

This is what I did last year for the 7

Did you get asked to set up an appointment & come back another time or did they just do the whole shebang right there for you, including credit check etc?

When I did it last year, they did it on the spot.

Careful though, if you fail the credit check, you've just returned your iPhone to them and you can't (shouldn't be able to) buy it back.

Does Apple care matter to you? If not the iPhone payments plan would save you the £200 for the Apple care.

My current 7+ Envirofone offer me 55% of the price I paid 12 months ago. If I take that figure ( and would get more if sold via eBay/privately) the TCO of a £999 X could be £450 for the year.

The two issues I have with IUP is having to take Apple care and the fact that the X doesn’t ship until Nov. So realistically say you get the X at the end of November, you couldn’t upgrade to the following nov.

Apple should have sorted out the production of the screens and other components by then so likely that a 2018 iPhone would be available in sept. You’d have to wait in envy for two months whilst everyone else gets their shiny new toy

With the iPhone payments plan, you can sell the phone when you like, settle the finance and start again with the pre orders

Why wouldn’t you be able to buy it back? Assuming the phone you ‘returned’ would be the one you get when you sign up to IUP

From what I've read, it minimises the term of the loan, rather than the monthly amount.

I did this last September and it didn't minimise either the amount or the term - they credited the full amount of the trade-in to my credit card. I suppose things might have changed since then, though...

Thought this was a deal that was good enough to share here.. for existing customers only (unfortunately)!

Just today I upgraded my current SIM only deal to the EE 4G Max 30GB Data, Unlimited Calls & Texts Tariff.

I was mid-contract (month 7 of 12) and managed to start the new 12 month contract with minimal haggling or penalties via the web chat route.

EE are the best network by far in the UK in terms of speeds and coverage!

Hope this helps.. perhaps to complement a shiny new iPhone 8/8+/X!?

With the credit check on the iUP is it a proper credit check or more of an adverse credit check if you get my drift.
I've not had a credit check for some time.

It's a full credit check.

Check your score with Experian, Noddle and Equifax (...) to ensure that it all looks healthy.
My suggestion is no more than 2 missed payments in the past 12 months, and not a high debt (revolving card credit) utilisation.

Cool thanks! Well i've never missed a payment in my life so if I have to go down that route I should be fine.

You can buy it back if you fail the credit check, friend had to do this last year.

I would be looking to get the AppleCare yeah. The 11 payments are an issue yeah... but I might pay them off in advance if a new phone comes out in September. So I wouldn't have to wait. Costly, sure...

I also like the idea of not having to worry about scratches or dings, which severely reduce the value of the phone sold privately.

Thanks for these responses guys. I'll have a look see. Mind you, I don't really have a credit history.

Edit: Apparently I have an excellent credit score. Funny, don't have any credit cards, don't even really pay any bills.

Ah, makes sense. My phones always get passed down to my wife, who passes hers down to our son. I’ve never had the opportunity to sell any of them, going right back to the original iPhone!

Just to add to what some other people have said. The finance deal is with Barclays who are quite "picky", from experience when buying a MacBook Air back in 2014 on interest free.

Could always check with https://letmechoose.barclaycard.co.uk/
