Can't you just install 10.6.0, download 10.6.3 install it and then install QECI?

I've had no issues doing the above, the computer works without QECI, just a lot of things don't. You should still be able to install the combo update, though.
That's what I was getting ready to do, but I had read of some folks getting a black screen and I didn't want to screw myself and have no MP.

That's why I was asking for a procedure on how to get from Leo to SL--including if you have a problem.

I'm guessing it goes like this:
1. install SL, reboot
1a. after reboot, if you have a black screen or other problem, boot to safe mode and run Zeus/QECI.
1b. if that fixes the problem, go to #2...if not, go to 1c.
1c. ????, then scream, then faint
2. install the combo update for 10.6.3, reboot
2a. same as 1a.
2b. same as 1b.
3. hopefully you're running 10.6.3 with no problems

Am I right?

if you have a display with single link (24" or smaller) then having no QECI will not result in black screen, only slow graphics.

Ah...didn't know that--good to know! I've got a Sammy 24" SyncMaster 2494, so I guess I'm good to attempt it. Thanks again! :)

Cindori, or anyone else that would know...

I'm running 10.6.4 with the 10.6.3 kexts manually installed. Things work but I'm having some slight artifacts and the computer crashes when I try and play games.

Does this mean my ROM is messed up? Is my card possibly messed up?

I've made my ROM from the original so if it is the ROM, I'm not sure what else I can do.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

So I would appreciate it if anyone could confirm this for me, as it seems I'm at the end of my line with this card.

I'm in 10.6.0 with QECI installed and I'm getting artifacts and sluggishness.

Is this due to my ROM being bad or is my card borked? I'm out of RMA from newegg so it looks like I have no option as XFX certainly wont RMA this after I messed around with it so much.

For reference,
Original rom:

Modified rom:

you cant just open a rom file and go "aha, this is an artifact-causing-rom"

have you checked in zeus that qeci is applied...for instance

Yeah, QECI is applied.

I didn't expect you to look at the ROM and instantly know, rather, I was hoping, given your expertise, that you have seen situations like this before and would maybe know what caused them.

Unfortunately, I had to contact XFX to ensure I had the correct ROM so they are familiar with my... exploits. I don't believe they will still RMA the device, and I've exceeded my 30 days with newegg unfortunately.

ok well so I made a rom from your original and it's identical to your modified. so it's something wrong with card or drivers. test in windows to rule out card.

Hi Guys,

Some help/advice required from your experience with this card.

I bought a pre flashed card from ebay here in Australia. It replaced my ATI 1900XT in my then first gen mac pro. I noticed an improvement straight away in Aperture and iPhoto. I then sold my 1st gen mac pro and bought a mac pro 3.1, this came with a 8800GT card installed.

I pulled the 8800GT and installed the ATI 4890, to my surprise the previews in Aperture and iPhoto were slower than the 8800GT!

I have since ran OpenGL Extensions Viewer and this also indicates that the 8800GT is faster than the 4890. I have attached two benchmarks of each card. The test was carried out on a 2.8 Mac Pro running 10.6.3 and a 30" Cinema display @ 2560 x 1600.

Any help/advice as to why the 8800GT is showing greater results would be much appreciated.

put a load on it

move AA to 8, Multi to 4, check them both, and hit the "Benchmark" button.

Did your Ebay seller provide files to make it run in 10.6.4? Tricky thing for 4890.

Nice. Works like a charme. Now all Drivers are actual 1.6.16. BIG THANKS! ..... can you explain to me how you got the ATIx2000.kext work with the other original 10.6.4 Extensions? Do you only edit the Info.plist? Tried that before myself and got a crash.

I see that the Binary-File inside the extension is 88 bytes smaller than the original 10.6.4.

Tell me the Trick. :D

the trick is very complicated, if you dont know what is case and how it looks in asm - dont even mind.

Upgrade with care and have a backup because it is still not working here--see post on netkas.org. Causes KP related to ATIRadeonX2000.kext according to backtrace.

Netkas and Cindori,

This HD4890 problem with 10.6.4 gets weirder.

This morning I updated a working 10.6.3 installation with Netkas QE_CI10.6.3 package, then installed 10.6.4 and lost the resolution settings. I applied the new Netkas QE_CI10.6.4 package released yesterday and got an immediate kernel panic. I went back to a clean 10.6.3 install with the QE_CI10.6.3 package and then ran the 10.6.4 combo update to get to the same lost resolution stage. Then I applied the 10.6.4 package you link to at groth's org, fixed permissions with Apple's Disk Utility and rebooted. The resolutions were there but no QE/CI. I then expanded the same package using Pacifist and opened kexthelper b7 to install the files in the package again. After I rebooted, QE and CI were back and working with 10.6.4! I then ran Apple Disk Utility to fix the permissions and it found hundreds of wrong permissions resulting from using kext helper. After another reboot, 10.6.4 is still running fine with QE/CI, although the versions of the ATI kexts are 1.6.10 in most cases.

What conclusion to draw?

First, Netkas' new installer doesn't work for me for some reason.

Second, there must be something that Kext Helper b7 does that somehow enables your packages to work after it runs!

I have no idea what because usually I stay away from kext helper due to the damage it does to permissions!

I don't know if this helps at all but it seems that least part of the problem is to do with permissions.

It would be nice if Netkas could fix his latest 10.6.4 package for those of us getting kernel panics because it would be better (but perhaps slower) to be using the 1.6.16 versions of the kexts.

Thanks for all your effort with this.

there is no "cindori 10.6.4", I just distribute it through zeus (seeing as it's a vital part to get flashed cards working), netkas makes the pkg

its not unusual to have to reinstall patch or maybe reinstall update and then patch

The difference between the package for 10.6.4 you link to and the new Netkas package released yesterday is that the former uses part of the 1.6.10 kexts and works with a bit of finessing while the latter uses all 1.6.16 kexts and seems to work for some people but not others.
is there a possibiity that running Kext Helper on the latest package from Netkas would work? I am too tired to try it again tonight but might look at it tomorrow.
What is odd is that Kext Helper achieves something that Disk Utility does not (in addition to badly messing up permissions).
Weird.

i am not currently linking to any QECI pkg. you mean the one I tried to make like 2 weeks ago? obviously the newly netkas release is the one you should use and the one the button in zeus points to.

The latest Netkas package fixed it for it for my HD4890 with 64-bit kernel. Thanks Netkas for sticking with it and getting the fix for us.
Now 5870 looks tempting! Can the Rominator and Cindori come up with a new ROM patch? Watch this space.

Will this patch get my 4890 working with my 4870? I'm going to see in the morning. A little late for me to try it now.

Gosh it would be sweet if a ROM were created for a 5970 or something. Only thing keeping me from getting that card is that fact that it won't run in SL.
