mac pro with flash xfx 4890 1gb crashing on cs:s/portal

thanks for all the great information and development that has gone into this thread. i am sure it has helped a lot of people and save them some coin.

i am having a problem with my macpro 3,1...i i have a xfx ati 4890 card zsfc ver. 2.0. i have flashed it bootcd style with the 4890 rom floating in this thread. i am running 10.6.4, ran the update driver in zeus and also have updated it with the new netkas update for 10.6.4 (did a fresh 10.6.4. combo updater first).

running cs:s or portal in mac os x seems to have issues, it will run fine for 10-15 minutes, then all of a sudden it crashes, i get some striated grey screen. i always thought it was due to the card over-heating, but i doubt it, i installed an artic vga cooler (twin turbo pro), cards seems to be within normal temperature variations. the funny thing is, that with bootcamp win7, the games run super smooth and fine, no problems what so ever, i can game for hours.

i am not sure what the problem could be, i have ran some fury or furball program on win7 for hours under heavy load and the temp never gets past 60C. could it possibly be a KP on the macosx side?

any help would be appreciated, or even suggestions.....man, i really want to get cs:s locked and loaded....however, i am just locked up on the mac side right now.

thanks in advance.

Yes! Success w/ 10.6.4 and HIS H489FT1GP Radeon 4890.

great news for future 4870/4890 (and 5870?) flashers http://groths.org the end of uploading and searching for roms. the end of having to get help to make a efi rom.

That will be sweet! Thanks so much for your hard work, both you guys. I would encourage everyone who has been helped by them to contribute at http://groths.org/zeus/donate.html because Zeus rules.

Cindori and netkas, I am not sure where you are located, but I will be in Uppsala from 24 Sep through 02 Oct 2010 (I think... it's late September for sure) and I would love to buy you a pint. Or 3. Of course, I love vodka too:D :p

Problems with a Sapphire 4890

Thanks Cindori and netkas for your hard work. I really appreciate all you've put into this to help fellow Mac users!

That being said, this is the first time I've run into troubles. I bought and flashed a Sapphire 4890 and it worked fine in 10.6.3, QECI and everything. Then I upgraded to 10.6.4, then installed the QECI_1064 package from Zeus.

After the upgrade, it loads the ATI4800Controller and ATIRadeonX2000 extensions but does not have the Quartz driver installed. System Profiler lists those extensions as being loaded but Zeus's check says that the Quartz driver did not load. Also, I'm unable to load Aperture or take screen shots.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

It's a long shot but download the latest package direct from netkas.org and try running the installer again.
If that does not do it, open the netkas package using Pacifist so you can see the kexts, extract them to a folder on the desktop and then use Kext Helper b7 to install the kexts. After running Kext Helper use Disk Utility to fix permissions.

Clarification

great news for future 4870/4890 (and 5870?) flashers

http://groths.org

the end of uploading and searching for roms. the end of having to get help to make a efi rom.

This seems like excellent news for a muppet like myself. I've been following this thread for a while and have found it difficult to make the purchase here in the UK as finding the exact cards and revisions is nigh on impossible and newegg won't ship to the UK.

My original X1900 card is buggered (never really worked that well in the first place) and I'm loathe to give Apple £290 for a 4870, or any money for something that should have worked in the first place! I'd just about given up trying to find the right card and was just about to order one from apple when I though I'd check here one more time.

Do I understand correctly? Can I purchase any 4890 card such as this one here,

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-RA...6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1278409563&sr=8-2

and expect the rom to be updated and work or will it only work with only known compatible cards and roms?

This may seem like a basic question but clarification would be appreciated and if it works I would be more than happy to donate so that you can carry on your good work.

Cheers

this will work with all 4870 and 4890 cards except the ones with changed pcb! that is, it will not work with cards that have custom boards. asus has one of these, they moved the memory chips to the underside. this is the only card with custom PCB that I know of. pic of it:

as far as I know, it should work on any 4890 besides that. but don't push it. if you see a model with a crazy hitech fan, it's a good sign that pcb might be changed.

the model you linked will work with this.

next update of Zeus is gonna be BIG one...

Thanks

I'll order the card, do I need to wait for this next update?

And thanks again.

Hmm, that didn't work. The package from netkas.org doesn't contain the full kext, just the patched files. After running Kext helper it overwrote the full kext in /System/Library/Extensions with just the files that were changed in the patch. Looks like I'll be restoring from 10.6.3...

Has anyone else run into this issue, where the kext loads but QE/CI is still not available?

Thanks!

Hey Keylimepi
I'm in the same boat but glad at least I'm not alone. Macpro 3.1, Saphire NE 4890, extensions all show as 1.6.16 but no QE/CI. I've run through multiple reinstalls with no luck. I did 10.6.4 on a fresh HD before committing my 10.6.3. I've had zero issues with the 4890 up to this point. At this point I'm open too suggestions.

Sorry to hear you're in the same situation, but at least it makes it less likely that either one of us is just doing something stupid. :) I wound up going back to 10.6.3 and things work fine now. Boy I love Time Machine. Would have been hosed without it.

Perhaps there is an issue with Sapphire 4890s?

I'm willing to provide debugging data to anyone who can make sense of it.

Sapphire 4890 w/10.6.4

With all the turmoil regarding the 4890 I am surprised to be reporting good news.

A member here sent me a Sapphire 4890 1 Gig.

The Part # is 288-1e115-500SA

It looks like the attached image but the PCB is blue with red fan.

One of the power connectors is an 8 Pin, but I just hooked a regular 6 pin and it seems to be fine.

I can't recall exactly why the owner sent it to me, I think he had some issue.

Anyhow, I flashed it using the ORIGINAL 4890 ROM that Netkas wrote for me...a long time ago. It was an MSI card but had ref board, like this.

Card booted into 10.6.4 with no QE/CI.

I installed NEtkas little package for 10.6.4 and rebooted.

QE/CI back on and card running like a champ.

In fact, I am rather surprised how well it is doing with 30" display.

Last time I played with 4890, it had regular screen tearing on 30" while running 24 as well on 2nd DVI.

This one is working Okey Dokey. The only time I have seen anything resembling screen tearing is when I use scroll wheel, and it is hardly noticeable at all. It is MUCH reduced from last time I had 4890 here.

I fired up Bioshock and it played smooth as silk.

I am very impressed with how well it ran. I am usually anti-4890 due to their increased maintenance demands, but this one is very nice.

Note the combo of extensions. I think some might be the NEW ones we are using with 5870. In any case, this Sapphire 4890 is running like a dream.

I will return it to sender soon. Hopefully there is return postage $ in box somewhere. Don't mind helping out, but not if it costs me.

This experience proves my point again about reference boards. If you are looking for a 4890 and don't mind being beholden to Netkas & Cindori for OS update patches, get one like this that CLOSELY matches original 4870 with large, enclosed fan. The more wacky these cards got, the harder to keep them working.

I don't believe that I have the Dual DVI fix in since I have re-installed 10.6.4 update about 5 times.

No QE_CI

I haven't been able to get QE_CI support with the latest patch from netkas. I have the Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X. I am going back to 10.6.3 for the time being. Does anyone have an idea why some cards aren't working? I had things working fine in 10.6.3.

Hey, before you do that....

Look in System Profiler in the Extensions window.

See which ATI extensions are loaded.

10.6.4 sluggish expose?

Hi All,

I have a Sapphire NE 1G 4890 (Hynix chipset) (I use to have the other memory model, but the card went bad). I did the 10.6.4 update this past weekend, and did the Netkas update. Everything working, but I notice that when I do all windows, or spaces, the transition seems sluggish and choppy. Anybody else see this?

fire up Zeus and hit the driver test tab

you may not have qe/ci running anymore.

other hint would be only single display running

Well, you are right. Geez, I didn't even think of looking at zues. It shows Quartz as NO. I only have 1 monitor attached to the 4890, and have another monitor attached to my 8800. (the monitor attached to the 8800 doesn't seem to work with ATI cards via DVI. common issue with the vx2025vm viewsonic monitor)

I reinstalled Netkas package this morning, but still no go. It shows the extensions all at 1.6.16.

no it's netkas x32 version of the patch, just to rule out that he didnt bork anything when he made a x32+x64 version
