Flashing my new card =)

Hi all!

I tried to flas an XFX 489x before and things turned ugly. The card could actually have been faulty befor my try, i did not even try it out be fore flashing.

How ever, I learned my lesson this time. and since I got a brand new card now (Big porps and mucho cudos to XFX for supporting and ginving me a new car at a very fair price from their site.) - and does not want to mae the same misstake again. I thought I'd check here BEFORE i try to flash, this time. :)

The new card I got is a HD-489x-ZHFC, I made a backup of the original bios with ATItools under XP64. And think I'm ready to go.

Do I need to do enything else, or can I just run Zeus and let it do the magic? I read that Cindori managed to get it to automatically make a EFI-rom out of any original bios. Is that all I need to do really? + the drivers ofcourse... :)

I appologize in advance for any stupid question. I just want to be sure I do it right this time. :)

Cheers,
m0squito

Ah, cool! :D

Is there any other way to get it working before monday? ;)
I'm soooo exited about the new card. haha. =)

So I've been noticing weird artifacts in Starcraft II with my new XFX 4890.

Its been properly flashed and whatnot. When starcraft tries to draw some lights or other flashy little bits, sometimes it will be in weird patterns, or exceed the areas it should be in.

Is this related to my graphics card overheating (that was the problem back in the day with WoW and the x1900xt).

Is there a good piece of software to monitor the temperature on the GPU? Temperature monitor and iStat only list "expansion bay".

Do I need to modify the ROM to increase the fan speed on the card, it doesn't seem to loud, if its going at all.

I use SMC fan control to get some air flowing, but I feel like I might need to do that on the card itself?

Hi,

I had the same issue with my sapphire NE 4890, and sapphire replaced it. now my replacement is doing it, so i am thinking it may just be due to the flashing of the rom, or some other strange issue and not necessarily a bad gpu. I haven't even had a chance to play any games with the new 4890 yet. (way to much work to play unfortunately). (though, it could have just been a bad gpu to begin with, yet it seems to have gone away after a reboot.)

Been having the problem on my old (since March) HD4870, so flashed my back up 4870 (fresh out of the box) and the problem persists - flashing artifacts and distorted textures - I don't think it's bad GPU, maybe just particular models. Maybe Blizz can patch it, or hopefully driver updates will mend it.
It's weird because otherwise animation and frame rates are great - recommended settings are all High.

Would you mind sharing where you got this card from. I am having some troubles tracking one of these down. Thanks.

Whelp, I'm just an *******!

I couldn't let it rest and I tried to re-flash my card per peloche's guide, I thought I might have missed a step before. And apparently I didn't the first time, and I did something very wrong this time.

It had two mcucs but this time the ROM isn't working. My computer wont boot at all, with or without the card. I put it in a windows machine, and now that wont boot either!

It messed up the BIOS on the PC pretty bad. I only had a slot for one graphics card so I put it in by itself, hoping I could get into the BIOS to enable to on-board video and flash it. It wont recognize USB devices anymore, so I'm unable to change any BIOS settings. And it seems to be stuck attempting to boot from CD, however, I can't make it as I don't have a working keyboard!

I'm going to try to get a PS/2 keyboard to see if I can salvage the PC. As for the Mac Pro, I dunno.

It suffers from a similar problem, the light on the keyboard doesn't flash on start up.

I had no idea I could mess it up this much! I'm not sure what I did that was so wrong.

I actually got if from XFX directly. I messed up my old card and got intouch with XFX-support in the UK to see if there was any way I could get my old card running again. The support was exclent, but the card was dead never the less. Anyways, XFX was a good sport and let me buy one of those cards for a very reasonable price from them directly. XFX rule actually. =)

Thanks for the information. It seems though I have started looking to late and they are all out :(

Bummer. :( It works very well with windows and with injector under OSX btw. =) I'lll keep an eye out for you, in case I stuble up on one.

Now that the 5XXX series cards are coming out for the 2009 Mac Pro, is there any chance we will be able to get these cards working on our model of Mac Pro? That would be sweet!

thanks that's nice :) :apple:

EDIT: also tried the flashed card on a hackintosh it only shows the right amount of memory (1024mb) once the QE/CI exotic patch is installed. Without the patch the resolution is low, no monitor detection info and no QE/CI but the card info ati 4890 pcix16.. is there from the start (but showing wrong ram)

For anyone still looking for a 4890, there's stuff on eBay. Flashed for OSX already too. Just sayin' :)

Is ATY,motmotparent normal in a duplicated slot?

After I flashed my 4890 and played a few games, I noticed I had a second slot-1 under my PCI card info called ""ATY,motmotparent" Did I install something I didn't need to? The whole flash process worked and had great success playing games on the card. Just wondering why my machine has this under my PCI cards.

my mac is a 1,1

sorry if this was stated earlier. I've been searching for an answering all morning.

Thank you, I wouldn't have gotten this far with out your posts.
(my link speed at 2.5 is normal right? for my older 1,1 mac pro)

My benchmarks don't seem normal though

4890 XFX: Part NO. HD-489A-ZDF7

from the ROMS zip. tried both over clocked and normal, around same results.
Seems a lot slower than everyone elses.

MacPro 1,1

Thanks

price falls coming for 5xxx series?

Graphics card vendors are expected to start selling AMD's next-generation GPU (Southern Islands) in November with AMD to officially announce the series in October, according to sources from graphics card players.

To defend its market share, AMD plans to cut prices for its ATI Radeon HD 5000-series GPUs in the near future. The action also serves as preparation for the upcoming Southern Islands GPUs, the sources noted.

AMD originally planned to have its next-generation GPUs using 32nm process and codenamed the chips Northern Islands, but Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) skipped its 32nm R&D for GPUs and advanced directly to 28nm R&D. In response AMD adjusted its plans and decided to continue adopting a 40nm process, while changing the product's codename to Southern Islands, the sources explained.

AMD declined the opportunity to respond to this report saying it cannot comment on unannounced products.

Thanks

Don't forget though, you have the "Benchmark" checkbox turned on, and when I set mine up the way you do, I get nearly identical numbers, with a 4890 on my Mac Pro 1,1 2.66

Are these not good? (or not correct?) I have no idea what good or bad numbers are with this app. (did one version w/bmark, and one w/out.)

Good to know someone else is yielding same results. I feel its a bad rom for our card. Benchmark is supposed to be checked. If you read the first few pages until you find the posts with 4890's they have a lot higher numbers, all around.

Oh, yeah. You're right.

That's depressing that there are numbers with "lesser" cards that are 3x higher or more. :/

you should be getting round 700 on these settings + benchmark ticked.
not 200.

might be problem with rom but unlikely. im guessing 10.6.4 driver is it, or perhaps a new version of OpenGL viewer is behind these scores?
