It is crazy that this thing make so much difference aka trouble.
I’ll try to find something too. Good luck mate!

Thanks to Treksdot I've successful got the HIS 4890 working. I'm having a few problems in OS X though!

I keep getting tearing across the screen!!! Also, I tried to watch an episode of Mad Men that I purchased from iTunes and because of the damn DRM is keeps telling me that the screens aren't authorized to play the tv shows!!!!

It's only tearing on my 30 inch monitor, not my 20 inch. The fan is constantly going harder than it should too - although not full blast. When I unplug my 20 inch monitor the tearing stops. The fan is still loud, though.

Can't seem to fix the DRM problem with Mad Men no matter what I do.

Not having the iTunes DRM problem you're having. The only thing I can suggest is to boot off of the UBCD and relfash to stock ROM. From there make another UBCD using a copy of the ROM from the Normal package or beg Rominator to make you a custom ROM. (I can verify that begging does work on him.) Quick question, after flashing the card you did uninstall the Natit package right?

I hate DRM. That's a pain in the ass to do that all again and I probably don't even remember the correct steps. I sent a PM to Rominator. I'll see what he thinks/says about the tearing issue, which is my main concern.

Calming

Drexus if you check the 4890 compatibility thread in this forum you'll see which card to get and where to get the necessary cables. They both plug into the logic board and you need do nothing with the optical bays. You need a second working card to boot off of and run the display so you can flash the 4890. If you have a secondary ATI card then this complicates the process to a small extent and is covered in Cindori's instructions. The instructions found in the first post are still current and in fact do not conflict with itself, if it does it's because you're reading the red text. Cindori went through the trouble of making the process as automated as possible and if you would check your attitude you'll find out how easy it really is. Later today Cindori will be releasing his new and improved flashing utility which should make the whole thing even simpler. Hope that helped.

Treksdot: I have to apologize for coming across a bit frayed. As indicated, I've been through a rough course with the stock X1900. The timing of my card failing is poor to say the least. Normally I would have considered forking out the big cash for an Apple store purchase, but I've committed a sizeable portion of funds to something else this year, and that coupled with the unfortunate failure of my GPU has put me into a spot. So I took a chance and brought home the Sapphire HD 4890. Once I opened the box I was committed to making it work. Projects lined up, clients calling, work piling up... and then, the new card cannot run = one frustrated guy. So again, sorry for sounding impatient, but it was starting to sound like a pipe-dream after 10 hours of reading threads.

The conflict I found with the original post was the fact that it did not say to have a second card [from nvidia] running the main screen. It just assumed it was there, and that everything was ready.

Cindori: Your patience and understanding is admirable. Thank you. I'm myself now... all chilled and collected. Congrats on the achievement! I understand there isn't a ROM for my card at this time. If there is anything I can do to help this process, please let me know.

My only question at this time is: Can I flash the card with the new awesome ATI flash tool (once a ROM is available) by using the Netkas method to boot with the 4890, and flash it with the new ATI tool? I just want to avoid having to find a second card just to get this one working.

Rominator: Thank you for the extensive report on the current status of things. Your time in offering this is much appreciated.

mfka: The image of the card you show in #1008 is the one I'm holding. I've downloaded all the material you posted in #1013 (I just had to get past the porn redirect for the QC link). I'm off to get another power cable from the new Apple store here. I don't want to kill my power supply by jumping off the optical bay. (good thing too, I have it all wired to go, but didn't go beyond that).

Again, thank you all. I'll be back later with the card in place.

Yes. Where do I look to see if it has Hynix on it?

You have to remove plastic shield together with cooler.
Card looks like this when naked. Memory chips are around
main processor.

I ordered the very same Sapphire as Cindori has and soon as i pulled
new edition card out of the box (box is the same as for old one btw)
i knew that there will be more people with this “problem”.
Thats the reason i collected all Peloche’s knowledge and stuff
he made in one place exclusively for Sapphire New Edition cards
with Quimoda chipsets.

You can get that stuff here -> https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/800949/

On my issue of screen tearing with dual monitors with the HIS 4890 - I've just noticed something.

When I am using the computer while playing a game or using a Flash application, the tearing stops completely!!!!

In System Profiler I noticed I'm listing two PCI cards. The top one says there's no driver installed. The bottom one says there's a driver installed.

Is this normal?

probably because the game uses a Hz or Resolution that works ok.

use switchresx - experiment with Hz and resolution.

also something you can try is to use RBE in windows (google it) to edit rom, set all clocks at same lvl

Apple

Turns out I can't get a cable from the Apple store here in Ottawa. Apple does not sell anything scary like that to consumers. If there is an issue with the cable that came with my Hex-1900, then they can "service" it with a new cable. Bottom line, I'm SOL going to Apple.

I downloaded switchrezx - don't really know what to change the Hz to. I changed the resolution a few times but the tearing still occurs.

If I use RBE in windows will I have to reflash or will there be any other complications? Could you maybe give me a suggested clock speed to try for all the settings?

Under windows I have no tearing issues with the monitors.

Thanks.

I will. Just as soon as I can get my hands on a second PCIE power cable. Does anyone know if one of the power sockets on the card draws less then the other? Would I risk running the second socket to the optical bay if the other was connected to the logic board?

When all steps are completed, rebooted, and everything run normaly, you can check if QE_CI is activated by downloading this demo for example:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/demos_updates/fordracing2.html

If this game works you are ok with QE_CI

mfka: could you please add this point to the step by step list.

I have QE check in ATI Flashing tool :) its under "Test" button

You have run it this way? No troubles?

yep. no troubles. I even ran a 2.5 inch hard drive also on same molex. But got me another motherboard cable eventually, feels safer when running that extra drive
