Hi everybody ,

Finally I could find someone who wanted to flash my card and I got it back today and it's working. So I'm super happy ,it was worth waiting .
I want to thanks everybody who helped me .
Peloche ,when I'm coming to visit the new Apple store in Paris ,I'll
pay you a drink.
Still a question (in fact 2) : -how comes the "Link Speed " of hd 2600 it's 2x greater then of hd 4890 ?(see attachments )
-wat is "MotmotParent"?
Just curious .
Again ,thanks a lot .

Hi semaca,

It was fast and thanks for the drink, i've already started to celebrate your success, just in case the day you visit le Louvre Apple Store they 'll be on strike :D .

As Yorb wrote, your ATI 4890 was located in the wrong slot, thanks to his acuteness ;).

Good luck and enjoy your Sapphire 4890 New Edition.

BTW thanks a lot for your report.

Motmot is the name of the framebuffer, IMHO it's a name of bird choosen by software programmers (i can be wrong).

Just some more successes after flashing my 4890 and I wanted to update, it may be a bit off topic here but I wanted to report:

I installed Windows 7 x64 via bootcamp last night on my 2006 MacPro 1,1 and am very pleased with the results:
-I have had no bluetooth keyboard pairing issues which seemed to happen in XP.
-I installed no specific bootcamp drivers, just the default Windows 7 x64 drivers that came pre-installed.
-I did install the latest ATI x64 drivers/software for the 4890.
-Modern Warfare 2 plays great with the 4890 at 1920x1200

Possible problems that I need more time to test and I am sure have nothing to do with the flashed 4890 card installed, rather I am sure it is more driver related (or lack thereof):
-computer seems to be very sluggish upon waking from sleep in windows 7
-I have not installed keyboard drivers so no volume or eject right now.

My Specs:
2006 Mac Pro 1,1
2x2.33Ghz Quad Core Xeons (personally upgraded)
Sapphire NE 4890 w/ Hynix memory
4x2GB memory
single 750GB drive dual booted with XP and Windows 7 x64

THANK YOU! :) Now my card works to boot windows AND OS X. I still get subpar benchmark results in OpenGL Extensions Viewer, but it's only 2/3 what I should be getting now instead of 1/2. And now the oGL 3.0 test shows up (though it fails). My results look virtually exactly like AnimeFunTV's:

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/8810100/

But if Cindori is right, that program is not to be trusted.

You're welcome, congrats.

Yorb are you going to use it only for benchmarking ?

Could you try Cod4 or something else like mfka did, he is very happy with it :D

Both slots are x16 ,so why one would be slower then the other one?
You really think I should put the 4890 in slot 1?
I'm celebrating to with a nice ,cold ,belgian beer .
Santè!

I don' know about your Mac Pro rev but mine is 2006 1,1 and it has only one slot capable of x16, it's PCIe slot 1

Yeap "Santé"

I'm not good in French accents :)

I have a MacPro 2008 with 2x2,8 quad core and it' got 2xPcie16 and 2xPcie4.
I can always try to change slots to see if I get some better results .
What program is there in the attachment ?

So you can forget what i've said about slots, sorry.

No pb for the accent semaca, "à votre santé"

Your cards are in the wrong slots. Your main graphics card (now your 4890) should be in Slot 1; that slot has twice the speed dedicated to it that the other slots have if I remember correctly.

EDIT: nevermind...mine shows up at 2.5 GT/s as well, and it's the only card in there. anybody know what this is about?

You mean like this?

Wait a minute! Why is there two cards showing in the list... no driver on the first one? Is that because my monitor is plugged into one of the ports and not the other?

Hi cryptoseven,

At the time being you can buy almost any 4890, we'll make a customized EFIROM for you, but don't forget to backup the original rom before any modification.

Good luck

Thanks Peloche! I just got the card and luckily already had 2 molex cables of the type I seem to need.
It's a HIS 4890 H489FT1GP. The "T" is for Turbo.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewProduct.aspx?Item=N82E16814161278.
But I did notice that the board is a bluish-green, not red, as in the Newegg picture. The sticker on the underside notes it is an "H489FT1G"... we'll see how this goes.

Forgive me if this has its own thread or a post, but I could not find it: How do you backup the original ROM? I am assuming that would be in Windoze XP since I can't do much with it yet in OS X at this point (I have a boot camp drive dedicated to 1 NTFS volume...)

Is GPU-Z the preferred tool for backing up the ROM?

Thanks to anyone who can confirm that...

All I know is that is normal... Drexus, do you know: To back up a ROM, does everyone use GPU-Z or is there another preferred tool?

Hi All,

So I flashed my Sapphire New Edition (using the flashing tool), and I don't think ti really worked out well. The flash said it was successfull, but when I went to reboot the system froze. I owered off, and back on, (leaving my 8800GT plugged in) and it booted up fine. I could see my 4890 adapter in the Mac fine, but I did get the "one of your adapters is not properly plugged in error). I shutdown and removed my 8800Gt. When I powered back on, the gray screen came up, but then the graphics would do strange things, like lines, and just not behaving properly. When OSX fully loaded, the desktop would jump around a bunch whenever I moved the mouse over icons. I decided to shutdown again, and put my 8800gt back in and boot back up into OSX. I went ahead an flashed back the original ROM and reboot OSX. At this point, the system would kernel panic, and I assume this might be due to the QE patch? ***NOTE: once I removed the 4890 from the system the kernel panic stopped****

I booted back into Windows, with the 8800GT unplugged, and the 4890 seems to work fine, and GPU-Z appears to be reporting it fine.

Any ideas? Can I flash the EFI ROM in Windows?

Attached is the original rom from GPU-Z, just in case it is different than the other New Edidtion.

NOTE: my card has the Qimonda RAM, and I used the correct ROM from Peloche.

Additional Info

Hi,

Just some additional info. I put the 4890 into another machine and booted up into DOS to use the ATIFLASH tool. The current ROM on my 4890 is the original that came with the card (I did a verify of the ROM to the backup I made, as well as to the original ROM posted by Peloche. (0x20000/0x20000 bytes verified). When I try to compare the 4890 to the E115QA1G.ROM file I get the following: 0x1D5/0x20000 bytes verified and then I get the following on the next line: Error 0FL04 : press '1' to continue. I have not tried to flash this ROM yet. (I redownloaded the EFI ROM a couple of times with the same result, just to be sure it wasn't corrupted).

Any thoughts? Do I need a custom ROM created, or could my initial problems be due a failed flash of the EFIROM?

Update #2

Hi,

So I flashed again on my other PC in DOS, and I got no errors. I moved the 4890 over to my Mac Pro and powered it up. The grey screen appeared, but as before I got some strange lines on the screen, and when it got into OSX I got the jumpy screen when I move the mouse around, especially over the task bar, and when I click on icons. Booting into bootcamp is OK, and GPU-Z shows the normal info.

Very strange. I can only assume that the ROM for the Sapphire New Edition wont' work on my Sapphire New Edition even though the info is exactly the same part number wise.

Any thoughts / help? Can somebody maybe create me a new ROM using the cards original ROM I posted?

Thanks

Hi kbonnel,

Hold on a bit, i wasn't connected and i'm back now, answer very soon.

Update:
I've checked your stock rom, it's same as mine (Qimonda), i've made a new EFIROM with it to be sure and i've got the same as the Qimonda one available in my signature link, so at first it's not a matter of EFIROM.
Could you please try under DOS on a PC (really dos booting on floppy or cd) :

atiflash -i

in case result is 0

atiflash -f - newbios -p 0 the_name_of_your_EFIROM

and verify under Windows on the PC, if it's ok reinstall it onto MacPro and report please.
I've got also the message about power cables, IMHO it's a false alarm, click OK and that's it.

Good luck,

New update,

techPowerUp is giving a way to flash under Windows:

ATI Winflash

http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/152

I never used it so i can't comment.

Have you installed QE_Ci package from Netkas ?

Hi,

One quick question, does it matter that I have a MacPro 2008 model?

K

no

did you install qe ci from ati flashing tool? its broken

I did install from the flashing tool. Where would be the correct working one? This could be my problem. FYI, I did, before I stopped for the night, reisntalled the 10.6.2 combo update, so would that have undid the qe_ci patch?

Update

Hi All,

Just wanted to give an update. I did the reflash booted into Windows (on my Mac Pro, since I don't actually have any other windows machines), and it works fine in bootcamp. I Then restarted into OSX, and at first I got the strange black lines right before the Apple logo appeared, and then it booted into OSX fine. I still had the strange graphics tear when I moved the mouse around. I installed the correct QE_CI patch (Thanks Cindori), and rebooted. Again I got these strange black lines right before the Apple Logo showed up, and then it booted into OSX. This time I had NO strange graphics tearing.

Question 1: Did anybody else have this graphics tearing occur when they flashed their 4890 but didn't have the QECI package installed?

Question 2: Anybody else have these strange black lines that appear when starting up your Mac Pro right before the Apple Logo?

So far so good, but for some reason my Viewsonic 20" does not seem to want to work with this graphics card (either through the DVI or through the DP to DVI converter). I have had this happen before on my X1900 with my old Mac Pro, so I dont' think it is a graphics card problem. (My Westinghouse works fine) Of course that just means monitor upgrade time :)

K

some black lines on top of screen will flash when apple boot screen is loading, it's normal for these flashed cards
