they plug right into the motherboard

Hello Cindori,

Will look next week in Singapore for the cables you mentioned.
OS X 1.6.2 clearly recognizes the HIS 4890 since I get the cable warning at startup.
Cross my fingers that I can find them since shipping to Vietnam is to easy.

Cheers,

Mac PCIe 6-pin cables (GPU to motherboard) in Singapore

Hello MacRumor community,
Does anybody know if and where in Singapore I could buy Mac PCIe 6-pin cables to connect the HIS HD 4890 directly to the power supply connectors on the motherboard. :)
Thank you,
YelloBello

It's 10.6.2. There is no Mac OS X 1.6.2

Club HD4890

Hi Cindori,

Yeeepeeee!!! finally I got it to work with your "new" Rom!

Thank you very much!!!!!

But I still have one issue:

I have both cards the old Mac HD 3870 in Slot 2 and the new
flashed HD 4890 in slot 1 in my Mac.
With "alt"-key hold I get the grey screen to select my system and with Win 7
everything is working perfectly.
Only when I try to boot OSX I get a window which tells me to
shut down and rebbot again (But after reboot still the same)
I then booted from OSX SnowLeopard CD and istalled OSX SL new from CD.
But then after reboot again that Window with the reboot request pops up.

It is not so tragic, because I mostly work with Win 7
but if now what I could do to boot OSX too would be nice.

Anyway thanks a lot
mike

me again,

everything was fine with Win 7.
2 Monitors on the new flashed HD4890 and my Sony Full HD TV on the
old Mac HD3870.

Unfortunately after approx an hour the old card (Mac HD3870)
in Slot 2 has refused to work.

Because the HD4890 needs 2 powercables (all with apple cables connected to the board) the Card in Slot 2 was powerd with an y-split power cable from the 2nd CD drive. Worked good until now.

When I now put my previous GT8800 in Slot2 (which doesn't need any
power cable) this Card seams to get no power. The vent stands still.
No Signal. Also the GT8800 NVidia-Card is not recogniced in the device manager.

Does this mean, that I crashed my 2nd PCIe-Slot ?

thanks
mike

sorry for the confusion!

Also the GT8800 needs a power cable. And now works!

But whatever, is there a reason, that the 2nd Card in Slot 2 refuses
to work after 1 or 2 hours?

thanks
mike

o.k. last post for today!

now, with my old GT8800 working (with power cable)
I suddenly can now boot to OSX. But only one Monitor at the HD4890
is working.

(Still 2 Monitors on HD4890 and Sony TV on GT8800 connected)

The funny thing is:
in system OSX info under PCI there are 3 entries.
1. ATI Radeon HD 4890 Typ: ATY,MotmotParent driver: no Slot1
2. ATI Radeon HD 4890 Typ: display driver: yes Slot1
3. NVidia GeForce 8800 GT Typ: display driver: yes Slot2

So there is a driver installed only to half of the Card?
Don't understand but this should be the reason, that this Monitor is not working.

Any idears?

thank
mike

Will this work?

I have an XFX HD-489A-ZDFL ver 5.2 I'd like to use in my Mac Pro early 2008 2,1.

I've tried the XFX rom from the 1st post and it didn't work in either Windows or Mac, so I've flashed it back to the stock firmware. I can upload the original firmware if that helps.

Any idea how/if I can get this card working?

Xfx Hd-489a-zdfl

Thanks Cindori

Success

it works!!! Thanks a lot Cindori.

Couple of minor issues.

No QE, but the patch in the ATI Flashing tool sorted that.

I get a power cable warning message. The card is connected to the power connectors on the motherboard with a couple of cables I got from eBay. Should I try the molex route or will this always come up?

Finally and most annoying is the noise. I think the card was designed to run upside down where it's pretty quiet. The right way up, the fan drops and rattles. I might have to get hold of a different cooler for it unless anyone knows a fix.

Once again thanks a lot guys, brilliant work.

I attempted to flash a Diamond A4890PE51G and received the errors some others have. It appears that they changed the design at some point in manufactoring. The one that I had was made August of 2009. When the make tries to restart it just does the chime over and over again.

ZSFR v3.1

I have looked and didn't see anything concrete regarding this card working or not. It is the XFX Model: HD-489X-ZS Part: HD-489X-ZSFR Ver. 3.1 I want to make sure that it will work before I do a ton with it.

Everyone should do some of THEIR OWN research rather than simply posting and expecting help.

Anyone else who wants to know if their card will work can search this thread:

1) Go to Google.

2) Copy and paste this into the search field:

Code:
site:forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=9234167

3) After this, add your brand and any extra details (let's use Ikyo's card as an example):

Code:
site:forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=9234167 [B]XFX ZSFR 3.1[/B]

End result is the link above.

This should give you an idea of the level of user experience for your specific card. Don't forget there are other threads on MR, but this one is quite well-populated with successes and failures.

Try the ATI Radeon 4890 Compatibility List thread too.

There have been ROM's posted for it, but no one has responded back of them working or not. I could put up the links to all of the ROM's that have been put up for it, but not sure if they are good or bad. iDigital was the only one that posted back, but he tried another card. Some of the people that had failures never posted their ROM to be edited or tried any of those from what I saw.

Looks like you might have to bite the bullet and try it yourself. Otherwise, search for your card on other Mac forums or seek another card that has been confirmed.

However, it would be great to have your ZSFR experience to add to what we currently have.

Success with a MacPro 1,1. XFX 4890 ZSFR 3.1 purchased from Best Buy in mid-January. Just need to flash card from a Boot disk as mentioned in this thread. I do have some fan speed issues. The fan is not very loud, but changes speed way too often and is a little annoying. Will add to post when I get home to do more tests on the system. I used Rom #13 and had to pull out my boot hard drive since no combination of keys caused the MP to boot to the CD unless no other boot source was present. Meanwhile, I'm going to donate to Cindori after this post. He deserves it!!!

My XT1900 (and the Applecare replacement) was a pain in the a??. Constant video artifacts and blanking screens. Geniuses tested it twice and said it was fine. Initial tests with the 4890 show no video artifacts on the same videos that the XT1900 was choking on. Haven't really put it through the paces yet, but so far no video issues.

Thanks for all your hard work Cindori!!!!!

I just got the card put in the machine and burning the image now. I put the #13 image on it along with another that was posted in the forums to be safe. I am going to make a small 1gig partition on a hard drive to save stuff to just in case.

It booted up just fine so far. I also used Rom #13. I did notice what you said about the fan when it was booting. I used the boot CD method that everyone described. It passed all of the tests so far. I will give an update in a couple of days about it.

I forgot to put this earlier.

Model No: HD-489X-ZS
Part No: HD-489X-ZSFR Ver 3.1
Rom: 13.rom

Issues: So far none that I have seen. Currently have both the GT120 and the 4890 installed. In Win7, I am using the 4890 for the main card and the GT 120 as a Physics card with modified drivers. The main display is a 24" Gateway and a 12" Cintiq tablet.

Purchased from Best Buy on 2/7/10. They are listed as a close out item.

can't boot with ati card in computer?

mac pro 1,1 with nVidia 7300 GT
OS X 10.6.2
installing sapphire 4870 1GB
(this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...2849&cm_re=radeon_4870-_-14-102-849-_-Product)

More or less, I tried to replicate exactly what the OP did on his personal computer. For power, I ran it from the extra connector in the DVD drive bay. The only difference was that I generated the needed molex cable using some wire cutters on an old PC I have. I ended up with these two pieces of cable:

wire ends (red, black, black, yellow) -> female molex
wire ends -> male molex -> male molex

Then I spliced together the two cables above using some wire twist cap thingies....ending up with female -> splice -> male -> male. Then I added the two cables that came in the sapphire box to get me all the way to the graphics card.

When I place the card in the mac pro...it does not boot. I get the "you need to restart your computer. press and hold the power button...blah, blah" screen when booting. If I disconnect the molex power...it sounds like the fan cranks up to a very high rate of speed, but other than that nothing happens (I can boot). Not that this does me any good.

I tried the radeon card in slot 1 and nvidia in slot 2. I think I also tried nvidia in slot 1 and radeon in slot 2. Same results.

Should I:
- buy the ATI cables to go from the motherboard and bail on the molex idea?
- bum some time on a friend's PC to see if the sapphire card works in the PC?
- other ideas?

Appreciate the help in advance -

I picked up one XFX card (Part no: HD-489X-ZSQC) and just can't get it to work.

My setup is Mac Pro 1.1 (2x2.66GHz). I have the original NVIDIA 7300 card

I;m about to buy HD-489X-ZSQC v3.1 if anyone has information on whether this card will work on a mac pro 1.1 or if anyone has successfully flashed this card let me know please thank you. :)

Update on my card, I can hear the fan rev up a little then back down. I didn't notice it before because it is very quiet. I don't see it being that big of an issue. I just wanted to let people know. I have only noticed this in OSX too.

Hi all,

I am at the end of my knowledge and really frustrated:

I bought a Sapphire Vapor-X HD4890 1G GDDR5 PCI-E HDMI/DP/DVI/VGA card.
The SKU is 11150-05-20R

Zvoni

modified your rom

http://groths.se/Saph_w_hdmi.zip

when you flash with AFT, check the dock. during the flashing process, an icon appears. if it only stays for 1 or 2 seconds, it means it cant find card, so you'll have to flash with Bootcd.

With same card references (PN 288-1E115-020SA), I succeded in flashing it with aft and the "special" rom from Cindori but tried to get QE with package for exotic cards but I don't get it...

Thanks for help !
