if qe patch fails ---> reinstall update and then try patch again

Things seem better after putting the 4890 card on 2nd line from bottom of pci-e and after resetting smc. I still get some trouble while awake from sleeping mode (1-3 times, but usually it's ok) and that message at start up of power cable not correctly plugged...

Thanks for great job Cindori !

Sorry so late to the game! lol

Hi Cindori, great work on this thread! You have helped a ton of people.

I purchased a used Sapphire 1gb HD4870 PN 11133-04

And just wanted to make sure the bios in your download for the sapphire 1gb is correct, the image you have with the file is with the newer heat sink and fan.

Thanks for you help!

you can save a backup and then try whatever rom youd like, if it doesnt work then upload and ill modify your backup

Fabulous thread, thanks Cindori et al. I've got a new version Saphire on the way, I went for this as there seems to be a high success rate with this card and none of the multiple versions of the XFX, I was getting confused with the ZSFL etc. etc. Will feed back once I've got in my machine.

One question I did have, and haven't seen confirmed (there's a discussion with no resolution on page 52), is has anyone attempted to run a 24" LED Cinema off the DisplayPort with a MiniDP to DP adapter (no DVI convertor)? I'm going to try and find someone with one so I can test but I'm not sure I'll be able to source one?

Thanks again guys.

Update: found this post (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=106665) seems to suggest it will work but one post on the whole net doesn't make a compelling case.

Hello all. Can someone post an ioreg (saved with ioregistry explorer) from macPro4.1 with native apple HD4870 card ? :)
Thanks
:)

Hi everybody,

As many of you, I have a Sapphire HD 4890 that I want to flash in order to make it work on my MacPro Rev 1,1.

Here are the informations about it :

P/N : 288-1E115-020SA
SKU : 11150-05 (nothing more after)

So, Cindori, I will be your "obligé" if you can help me with the original ROM of my card which is attached in this reply.

I believe, I have to flash it from a boot_cd. Is that true ?

Thank you in advance,

PS : Sorry for my poor english, I'm french.

Duke

HD-489X-ZSFC Rev 1.6

Hi

I have a XFX 4890 HD-489X-ZSFC Rev 1.6 that I just bought, because my 8800GT just died (does not boot into OSX anymore - kernel panic) but into Windows 7 but only on small resolutions.

The thing is, that my HD-489X-ZSFC does not look like the card from the picture. I just tried to flash it with ATIflash tool with screensharing, but it did not seem to work, or its not the right rom.
My card looks like this: http://gigglehd.com/zbxe/files/attach/images/236/843/229/003/XFX_Radeon_HD489XZSFC_02.jpg

I attached the original Rom File from the card. Would be awesome if someone could patch it. The card now only works when I boot into Windows7. But no grey screen before that. When I boot into OSX before flashing it, I managed to boot it, and then access it with screensharing. Now after flashing only windows7 works, OSX seems to crash on boot up, since it never shows up on my other computer to do screensharing.

Thanks for the help!

oh sorry, yeah just found the file that should work EFIROMFX.rom should be it.
But would it be possible to use Winatiflash or is that tool to buggy. Since I am not able to boot into OSX anymore.

Yes, it's what I made in the first place, but with no success.

Like you said in a previous post, the subprocess "flasher" icon appeared for 2 seconds and vanished. Then, after 15 seconds, ATI flashing tool shows a dialog that says "flash completed". Unfortunately, the card appears to be untouched.

I just try again. Flashed card. Halted the Mac. Plug the display on the ATI Card. Started the Mac again. But failed...

When I reboot, nothing happens. The Mac boots fine but the display is staying black.

I forgot to tell you, that my card is the Vapor-X HDMI edition.

Any idea ?

thank you for the time you spent.

hi

i succesfully flashed my xfx 4890 with the bootcd method. it works pretty good, but I have anoying sound from the fan. its like a mooing. it goes on and off, and then most of the time keeps on a pretty loud level. louder than my 8800gt. Should I try to flash it with a different rom?

its a XFX 4890 HD-489X-ZSFC Rev 1.6 flashed with cindori's rom file EFIROMFX.rom

The constant on and off from the fan is realy anoying, any success in fixing that?

I found this post from you earlier:
im having it too with my zsfc cards. prob driver issue.
you can plug the fan into a set volt by molex, making it run constantly same speed.

how do I do that, on what speed is it running then? is it safe for gaming, or will it overheat? how is the sound of the card on constant speed?

Hi all,

So I flashed with the bootcd method.

Everything goes fine, except like others in this thread, horizontal lines are appearing when moving mouse and OpenGL Apps like 'Motion 4' failed to launch.

To anyone who is considering a 4890 these days...I would like to offer my 2 cents.

The work done on 4890 is impressive. Netkas did the original ROM and patches and since then Cindori has spent countless hours writing software, testing, and posting helpful words. I have written a few ROMs when others could not. But as time goes on, the board designs are getting further and further from the original Mac 4870 which the EFI ROM and drivers are from.

As this happens, we have had more and more niggling issues show up.

If you want a TROUBLE FREE and easy to flash card, buying one of the earlier 4870s used on Ebay and using Cindori's app to flash it are your best bet. Find a card in the threads that has a working ROM and buy it. Most are like $100-135 on Ebay.

You need to ask yourself if the "disconnected power message", zooming fan, need for QE/CI updates with every OS update, screen tearing and inability to flash in OSX are REALLY worth a 10% larger electronic penis. 99% of you will never notice the extra 10% speed bump of a 4890. You WILL notice at least one if not many or all of the issues I noted above.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for your 2 cents, I know it can be anoying to get the same questions again and again, but its difficult to find answers, even with a searchfunction in a 50 page thread. I would like to contribute in developing the rom further but I am not really a programmer. My question:

Should it be possible to change the fan speed in the rom? If I open the custom rom from cindori in the Radeon BIOS Editor or is the EFI part not accessible/editable with that software?

I love the work that you put into those rom files, and would like to help enhance them further, so that other people can also by this version of the 4890 without problems.

Your "2 cents" are justified. I can understand that it's annoying to read same questions which are coming back again and again...

So, I agree with all what you said.

Unfortunately, in my case, 10% more of horse power or, if you want, of penis size, is needed. But I bought this card knowing what it can happen.

But what you explain can't be contradicted. You're right, boards will change more and more.

***** Keep in mind that I am (we are) very grateful for all the work you did. ******

it's just that it is very annoying to be so close of the goal... :)

Thank you again.

Should it be possible to change the fan speed in the rom? If I open the custom rom from cindori in the Radeon BIOS Editor or is the EFI part not accessible/editable with that software?

The EFI part does little more than set card up initially. We have no real insight into modding it and in fact we do little more than change device id. As has been posted many times, the fan behavior is controlled from PC BIOS. If one MUST have a 4890, again it would be advisable to find one that most closely resembles the original 4870...ie, large Red fan exhausting outside case with 4 wires running fan. The Mac drivers are looking for fan cues that are set up by PC BIOS. If the fan controller is now run from a different chip, or is using different values it will be very difficult to re-write the 4890 PC BIOS to conform to what OSX is expecting to get.

If you look at the MONGO 4870 thread that started all this, there are fan speed mod instructions linked from very first post.

Will this work?

There is only one way to find out.

Please post your results.
