- When I try to play bought HD TV shows in iTunes over my 30inch cinema display I get a message that I am connected to a non HDCP compliant display and therefore can't playback HD material on that screen - and I see and hear nothing

Did this work with your previous card? Insofar as I'm aware, the 30" doesn't have HDCP.

Hi everybody,

i now fixed the fan problem by changing the fan settings in cindoris rom file
with the radeon bios editior.

here is the new rom file that keeps the fan down at around 30% (not really audible) as long as the temprature is not rising over 58°C. After that it gradually increases, without making anoying jumps in speed as before.

My graphics card is XFX HD4890 XFX 4890 HD-489X-ZSFC Rev 1.6 that looks like this: Click for Picture

I attached the new rom file I used. I flashed it using the boot cd.
Thanks for this man... Really appreciate it. Cheers!

That looks like a good card, but make sure to dump the ROM before you attempt to flash it so if it doen't work someone here can modify it for you.

Also, the power cord you listed will not work. You need two of these. :)

Official rom from HIS Customer Support for HIS HD 4890 Turbo+

Hello Cindori,

On a PC forum, I followed a thread from a Canadian who noticed that the HIS HD 4890 Turbo+ he bought in Canada was not up to the specifications but a standard HIS HD 4890 at normal clock speed etc.

He went out and bought 3 more of these HIS HD 4890 Turbo+ only to notice that 2 out of these additional 3 had the same issue. A scam???

Some posts later he informed that somebody from HIS Customer Support had contacted him personally to apologize.

UPDATE. From HIS:

Thanks for your prompt response and once again we apologize for the problems you have with our HD 4890 Turbo Edition card.

Please be assured the core and memory clock of the cards is the same as 4890 standard version (Core 850Mhz / Memory 975Mhz). It is still fully functional and capable to deliver the best and fastest DirectX 10.1 Gaming Experience. We highly recommend you to go through the following procedures to upgrade the BIOS.

*** Since we cannot send you the BIOS through email, please download it from this link:
http://download.hightech.com.hk/bios/4890flash.zip
***

Step 1: Check your system requirement: Windows XP or Windows Vista

Step 2: Upgrade the BIOS:

1) Unzip the 4890flash.zip to a folder.
2) Run HD4890.exe
3) If flashing is successful, you will see the info (winflash.jpg) as in the attached print screen.
4) Click OK and follow screen instructions to reboot system.
5) If system can be rebooted successfully, the programming is OK. You can see the new clock 900Mhz engine and 1000Mhz memory clock in the Hardware Section of the Catalyst Control Center.

We look forward to continuing the relationship that we have shared over the years. If there is any problem that you may find in the BIOS upgrade process, please don’t hesitate to contact our technical team.

I downloaded the zipped bios "flasher" ran it under BOOTCAMP but I got with each attempt (3x) the message that the card could not be found although I had a second monitor (Dell 24") connected to it (besides my ATI 2600XT at which my 24" Cinema Display was connected).

Since I do not have access to a PC with PCIe slots I wondered if you could do something with this ZIP archive to help me get a "Mac version" of that rom/bios with which I can then flash my HIS HD 4890 Turbo+ for using flawlessly in my Mac Pro 3.1

Kind Regards,
YelloBello

PS. I hope this post might be of help in general to understand for you experts how HIS writes their rom/bios code for these cards.

Thanks for the info.

I just want to make sure that I am aware of what to expect. Once I flash this card I will get normal extended desktop in Win 7, but likely only mirror mode on 2nd display when in OSX 10.6.

Primary display is a DVI connection, secondary is a VGA connection which is a DVI-VGA cable.

Are you asking about VGA or both DVI ports? If the former, everything works under Windows, if the latter, both work under OS X and Windows.

Just wanted to say a big Thank You to Cindori for his wonderful ATI Flash App. I have been using my XFX 4890 (HD-489X-ZSFC Rev 1.6) for a few days now and everything has been working great so far. :D

The card runs hot btw. I am guessing it should be quite normal for most power hungry cards. Had to modify the ROM to bump up the fan.

Just a quick question: During installation, QE/CI gave a kernel panic. Had to reboot. Checked the system profiler, it detected two ATI PCI card installed. Is that normal or should just ignore it?

Thanks!

on some cards the sound driver chip gets recognized too.

QECI can give KP and not work, if so, reinstall 10.6.2 from Apple website and then reinstall QECI.

Thanks Cindori. Flashed my HIS card
but I keep getting the power cable
warning and after logging in the screen
turns black.

I cannot get the "motherboard cables"
so I guess that was it.

Or do you know of any other solution?

Cheers,
yellobello

I Was Hoping I Wouldn't Have To Do This

Hi Cindori / All,

I was hoping I wasn't going to have to do this, but I need some assistance, hopefully not much ;o)

I've got a new sapphire in my Mac Pro 1,1, hynix chipset, sku 11150-11-20r. I've flashed it with the new sapphire hynix rom but all I'm getting is a black screen. This is going out to a 20" adc apple display and the power light isn't lighting up. No dice in Windows either. I'm guessing it's the rom?

I've included the info from sys profile and attached the original ROM. All help very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Graham

Update

Thought I'd post an update. As it is everything suddenly appears to be working perfectly. To be honest I'm not entirely sure what happened.

I reverted from the new sapphire bios to the stock bios with the intention of making sure I could get the card working in Windows. Initially I couldn't, I'm not sure whether it was possibly user error, a bad connection or bad setup, the Windows BIOS tool wasn't recognising the bios or letting me copy it off the card. Eventually I got an output (small square of extended desktop) after playing around, rebooted and got full screen but it was still extended desktop, bit more playing and I got the primary screen via the 4890.

I now suspected that trying the flash again might get me somewhere. So I did it, rebooted SL, and it got past the grey screen with the apple logo but then hung. Rebooted back in to Windows to check the new bios and it worked in Windows and was reporting correctly. I then rebooted back in to OS X but accidentally into Leopard, but it worked. Then booted in to SL and went through fine, installed the QE_CI update and low and behold it's swimmingly good.

And, I realise I may get scorned for this but I am running a MacPro 1,1 with a 7300, my primary reason for going through this process was to speed up Aperture 3 when processing 21mp pix without gifting Apple unwarranted cash, either through an unsupported, over priced 4870 upgrade or via a full hardware refresh. So far I'd say it's a success, Aperture 3 flies, bit more memory and I'd say I'm set fair for a few years with this beast yet. I do get the power warning but it's not a worry to be honest.

Cindori and the rest I salute you, I will be contributing some of my savings to your account, I won't tell you what to spend it on but spend some of it on a beer and I'll be very happy :D --- actually Cindori the donate link at the top of thread doesn't work, perhaps you could update or PM me, thanks mate.

Confirmation of specs: Mac Pro 1,1, Sapphire 4890 New Edition w/Hynix (11150-11-20R), flashed with bios from ROMs folder, 4890 in slot 1, 7300 in slot 4

Nobody'd scorn you, I also went from a 7300 GT to a 4890. And I paid $150 less than it would've cost me for Apple's card. :)

MSI Radeon 4870 1Gb

What do you think my chances of flashing this MSI card for use in my Mac Pro 3.1 would be? I have it in a PC I built, but would like to use it to replace an 8800GT that I flashed previously for my Mac Pro. I don't want to waste my time if it is not likely to work well. Also, is it better to flash it in the PC then transfer it to the Mac Pro? I did get the .bin file from my card using GPU-Z, but I can't find a utility that will .zip it to attach it here and it will not attach as it is (wrong format). Any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

OK, so today I took the dive and tried to install my XFX 4890 into my mac pro 1,1 which i just install 10.6 and updated. I installed the ATI flashing tool, installed Natit and shut down. Removed my old 1900, installed the 4890. Tried to boot but only get black screen on both ports. Tried to boot to windows with the card in and only get black screen on both ports. Bad card? I did purchase it as a refurbished from tiger direct. I am able to put the 1900 back in and get a display though.

On the back of the card : HD-489A-ZD HD-489A-ZDFC V5.3

Any help is appreciated.

For fifth time, natit is broken. Wait fr new tool (est release march 10) or go bootcd

I'm sorry, I must of missed this. What is the procedure for bootcd? There is alot of info in these 86 pages and it's easy to skim over it. Thanks for the help.... Shouldn't I have been able to asteast get a display in windows though?

EDIT: Found the guide here http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html - I assume its the same for 4890. But it still stands you would think I would still get a display in windows... no?
