Hi guys!
sorry if i ask a dumb question, but i've read some pages here and there without finding the answer of my question.

If i flash a vga this way will i get a full-working card like the applestore's one, or i'll have to install additional kext etc. to make it working?
Would be full-functional even with future os upgrades?

if yes, is the sapphire 4890 OC edition ok for this purpose?

Thanks a million!

new problem,

I 've flashed the rom u gave me, It did work! so excited, I owe u, Cindori
but the cheer didnt last long. Here comes the questions:

A. when comes to the SL desktop ,It pops up a warning that I haven't pluged the powercable into the logic board and the display card. but I did plug the molex cable from the superdriver
B. information in SL show that QE and CI was not supported and I found the mouse became dragging ,slow. but I did install theQE_CI 10.6.2 patch.

Since I've done ths so far, I need help more!

power cable warning is normal on new cards, sorry

as for QE CI, try reinstall 10.6.2 then reinstall QECI

I did as u said, not work as well. it is the rom downdloaded from the first page of this thread (XFX 487A-ZWFL&ZWFC) and it comes to this end. So I tried the rom u offered me above named "zwf5". It just starts up black. I think there is something wrong in this rom, maybe u missed sth. Would u kindly check the rom again? btw. I flashed the bios in DOS with a bootable cd because I can't get into SL with both 7300GT and XFX HD8470 plugged into logic board.

I found the rom size is different between the downdloaded one and yours,128KB and 131KB. The origianl unmodified rom is 131KB. Weird! the 128KB works but no QE_CI and the system go slow while the 131KB just goes to black screen.
I 've worked for daysand nights, getting mad! somebody help me please!

you said "I 've flashed the rom u gave me, It did work! so excited, I owe u, Cindori" so obviously it works. I can not fix power cable message.

i've found the answer, written by Cindori some pages ago...
...seems that only a 4870 512mb would work straight w/o patches.
inside the roms package i've found only the sapphire's one for the 512mb model.
So i should buy the sapphire's vga? anything working with the apple's original rom? (both dvi etc...)

thanks again.

Why not consolidate that information in the first post so people don't have to read through 9000 pages to get to their answer.

no,no, theres is something confused and complicated. I first flashed the downloaded one in DOS and plug the DVI cable onto 4870, it did bring me to the SL desktop. Then I received your ROM, so I flashed yours in SL by atiflashtool to make sure it is the right rom you wrote for the specific card. I thought i succeeded with your rom. but later i found the dragging problem!

then i went back to dos ,flash job again with your rom. and the card just went black. i have to reflash it in dos with the downloaded one ,but the same dragging problem.

open ati flashing tool, go QE CI, then Test, see if Qartz Extreme support is YES. if NO, install QECI.

you mean such as the answer to what card to get, like luigichelli asked?
i have a picture on 1st page for that...
there is also a dedicated thread...
so...

i can answer peoples questions as long as they show the amount of respect that they at least spent 10 seconds with search function first

I was YES. but the mac hardware information shows there no qe or ci
the big question is still that sl system become slow, hard to bear!

i really feel so bothering u, but the card costs me alot. so please check the rom again ,why cant be flashed in DOS?

Mac Hardware Information does not show QE support in Snow Leopard. so I have no idea what you're doing. sounds to me like you're using Leopard.

maybe you should have read up some before you purchased a card, and not rely your success on me.

Don't get me wrong Cindori, i relly appreciate the job you are doing, and the time you are spending helping everyone.
I only want to share the troubles i found approaching the VGA flashing process.
The image you added to the first post wasn't so helpful since it lacks comments.
What about adding something like:
Model X -> Pro: 10%faster, quiet fan / Con: needs a patch for 3d acceleration
Model Y -> Pro: works straight w/o patches for all OS / Con: half gig of ram, noisy.

Just sharing some thoughts after spending half a day reading here and there through this 89-paged thread and the related one with other 14 pages. For sure i wasn't lucky or smart enough to find the clear answer i want.

Regards.

every 4890 needs a patch for 3d accel. thats it. also, individual card comments are inside the ROMS.ZIP that you can find in the ATI Flashing Tool thread.

Excellent job Cindori. I'll make sure I donate once my card arrives.

I notice your card table has been updated with XFX 4870 cards. I note the ZWFC specifically, as this is the card I'd like to pick up. Anything I should watch out for? Memory limited to 512MB or so? Is the full 1GB seen?

Sorry to bother you, I can see you questions quite often.

all memory seen ofc...

when asking for compability there is a simple answer:

a) the card works
b) the card works but gives popup about Power Cable missing at boot

as you can see in either cases the card works, so stop being so cautious about what card you get. so far we have not seen a card that won't flash. if you wanna avoid b) then look for a card that Physically looks alot like Apple's card. if you also want to avoid bothering me or someone else with the job of modifying your ROM ;), look for a card that has had a modded rom posted, aka read 10 or 20 pages back from the thread. simple as that.

also,

DONT FLASH UNTIL NEW TOOL IS RELEASED

please help!

i flash my 4870 using ATI FLASHING TOOL
but now it doesnt work.

Mac > chime, chime, chime loop fast

how can i fix this ?

please help me

Mac Pro 1.1 / OS10.5.8 / sapphire HD 4870 512MB
bootcamp (winXP SP2)

Please to tell you the tool is finished. Releasing in a few days, need some more testing.

4890 with 30" & 24" question

Hey all, sorry I have been absent. Much afoot recently in Tinseltown. Right now I am getting buzzed violently by a swarm of Helicopters at Oscars which is like 3 blocks from me.

Anyhow, I was reading the EBay 4890 ad that Netkas noticed and I read something I could test. It stated that ALL 4890s have an issue running a 30" Display while running a 24" display. It also stated that if only the 4890 was connected, the problem would go away.

I went ahead and tried this with the MSI 4890 I have here. Sure enough, horizontal tearing on 30" while 24" was connected, went away if I removed DVI plug from 24" Dell.

Can anyone else with a 4890, 30" and another display on 2nd DVI confirm or deny this? I tried with my trusty old XFX4870 and there was no tearing.

Curious if there is a 4890 that is exempt from this behavior, as the XFX 4870s were exempt from 2nd display issues in Leopard.
