yes try to redownload update from apple. then after install, apply patch BEFORE reboot.

this has worked before when ppl had issues after patching.

Hi Just Upgraded Having the same issue reported, Banding and juddering screen. Have installed the package from zuse QECI_1063.pkg and the the package from the package from netkas.org QE CI Exotic cards 10.6.3.pkg issue is the same with both packages.

Graeme

Running a 4890 in my MacPro 1,1 and having the same issues as others with screen artifacting after applying the 10.6.3 update and netkas' QE_CI patch. Are we sure that the 4890s require the older framebuffer?

Attempted to fix our issue via Cindori's advice:

1. Ran 10.6.3 combo update, again.
2. Left combo update open, did not immediately restart.
3. Ran netkas' 10.6.3 qu_ci patcher
4. Restarted mac pro.

Outcome:
Exactly as before. Heavily artifacted screen after boot up. Then regular screen and the flashing, banding, and jittering. All just like the first time I updated everything to 10.6.3.

Perhaps we Mac Pro owners do not need this older framebuffer like it is suggested?

Followed same procedure outcome exactly the same.

looks like we got it, it seems to be a problem with incompatibility of olf FB and new X2000.kext

the problem with dual-dvi was different, it was related to missing devid in ATI4800Controller.kext

fix - use new FB and add devid to 4800Controller.kext

Cindori, can u make such a fix in ur app ?

can u guys come to IRC to discus it ? (irc.osx86.hu #radeonhd)

cuz we pkg on hackintosh with 4890 and all is working fine there.

Unfortunately I cannot. I am going to work soon.

I think there may be something in the difference between the current patch being installed on a hackintosh versus being installed on an actual Mac Pro.

I would try the whole process again, not installing the old framebuffer, however I do not know if that would seriously mess things up altogether.

If someone can convince me that I would not royally screw up my mac by not opting to install the framebuffer thru netkas' patcher then I will try it, otherwise someone else can risk it I guess. I'm petered out with all this. I'm glad I can use my Mac Pro but the flashing and jittering is truly annoying and renders video playback almost unusable.

After a quick chat with netkas on IRC a new QE_CI patch should be available soon for those of us not using a hackintosh. Just be patient a little longer and he'll have it out asap.

Have installed the new package twice each time reinstalling osx10.6.3 upgrade first its not resolving the problem the screen juddering has become more pronounced if anything.

Attempted to fix using netkas' NEW (non-framebuffer) patch to fix issues:

1. Ran 10.6.3 combo update, again.
2. Left combo update open, did not immediately restart.
3. Ran netkas' NEW 10.6.3 qu_ci patcher
4. Restarted mac pro.

Outcome:
Exactly as before. Heavily artifacted screen after boot up. Then regular screen and the flashing, banding, and jittering.

Am I doing it wrong now?

Should I run the 10.6.3 update, restart, then do the new patch?

cuz you need a fix, which is now available at my blog.

As brent1a I have

Installed the original relaeses from both netkas' and Cindori as previously posted.

I have also twice installed the netkas' NEW (non-framebuffer) patch to fix
and once the new version from Cindori

This was the procedure I have followed same as brent1a

1. Ran 10.6.3 combo update, again.
2. Left combo update open, did not immediately restart.
3. Ran netkas' NEW 10.6.3 qu_ci patcher
4. Restarted mac pro.

Outcome:

Something is not working.

Graemezee, just to verify:

1. The 10.6.3 combo update you are using is 754 MB in size?
2. You are using a 4890 card?

If yes to both then re-run the combo update, once completed reboot. Download and install the proper QE_CI patch. Everything should be back to normal after another reboot.

Fails most miserably on my Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X OC, 3.1 Mac Pro, which has, up till now, worked flawlessly in this machine. Whether installing the combo update then immediately installing QECI_1063.pkg followed by a reboot or installing the combo update, rebooting, installing QECI_1063.pkg, rebooting, graphic corruption is the result.

Back to 10.6.2.

BB

Edit: Tried the two above install procedures with another .pkg entitled "QE CI Exotic cards 10.6.3.pkg". Failure.

Edit 2: Needed this file

Upon further inspection it seems even the fixed QE_CI patch still links to the old framebuffer. If you're still having issues after upgrading to 10.6.3 and applying the latest QE_CI patch then this suggestion might help.

What you need to do:

1. Download the 10.6.3 combo updater if you don't already have it.
2. Install the 10.6.3 update to return you to a clean state and reboot.
3. Download the QE_CI patch I linked in my previous post.
4. During the install process click on Customize, uncheck the ATI4800Controller option and install.
5. Once that is completed open /System/Library/Extensions/ATI4800Controller.kext/Contents/Info.plist in your editor of choice.(I used BBedit)
6. Find and replace the line "0x94401002 0x944a1002" with "0x94401002 0x944a1002 0x94601002 0x94411002 0x94431002 0x944E1002 0x944C1002 0x944A1002 0x94421002"
7. Save changes and reboot.

When trying to find a fix for the problem myself I had actually modified the Info.plist by hand to add the device IDs and simply installed the ATIRadeonX2000 component from the initial QE_CI patch. Until recently I had thought that the fixed QE_CI patch would take care of everyone so I recommended that without knowing the included ATI4800Controller still contained assumed pointers to 10.6.2s framebuffer. Netkas has released a separate fix for those that have already applied the QE_CI patch. If you don't want to edit things by hand then install the QE_CI patch followed by the individual fix and that should have you running smoothly.

Mac OS 10.6.3 update

I have install QE_CI patch coorelating to Mac OS 10.6.3 update. Video is a little choppy time to time. Definityly don't try to run anything that requires hardcore rendering.

Question concerning:

netkas:

the problem with dual-dvi was different, it was related to missing devid in ATI4800Controller.kext

Cindori, can u make such a fix in ur app ?

Does this mean the bug only affects dual DVI Cards and will work fine for an HDMI output card

Reinstalling MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.3.dmg

This might be a dumb question and sorry if it is but,,,,,

If Software Updater already downloaded and installed MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.3.dmg once today, is there a copy of it somewhere on my HD that I can access? Or, do have to re-download the 750 MB file again?

"Thinking Out Loud",

Isn't there a way to revert back to the previous version of Snow Leopard where everything was smooth sailing until all the kinks are worked out?

Im speaking for myself that is. Just floating by. You guys are the ones hammering out the wrinkles with due diligence.

and I thank y'all for that.

Steve

Installed 10.6.3. As expected my second display stayed dark.

Applied the updated QE_CI - System came back up with heavy artifacting and judder.

Re-applied QE_CI to ensure I had the latest version. No change.

Applied "A Fix for a fix." Everything is fixed! Works great!

Thanks to Netkas and Cindori for all of their hard work.
