Graemezee, just to verify:

1. The 10.6.3 combo update you are using is 754 MB in size?
2. You are using a 4890 card?

If yes to both then re-run the combo update, once completed reboot. Download and install the proper QE_CI patch. Everything should be back to normal after another reboot.

Hi Treksdot yes to all your questions, but got your later post and applied the fix for a fix and everything perfect again Thanks for your efforts.

Second card dont't work after patch

Running MacPro3,1 with Saphire New edition HD4890 and HD2600 with Cinema 30" and Cinema 20". After update on 10.6.3. and installing proper QE_CI patch, display output on second graphic card (HD2600) not working any more, card is recognized in System profiler but not detecting the displays. On Saphire New edition HD4890 everything is working fine.

install fix for fix

ah ****, i know why, qe_ci_patch has 4800controller's Info.plist from 10.6.2, thats just a text file, but with wrong version

EDIT: finaly fixed, get new qe_ci pkg or fix for fix

Hello all, about a month ago I purchased a 4870 XFX ZWFL & ZWFC and thanks to this topic and your guides I managed to get it working perfectly, until today.
Installed the update and followed the instruction for the various patches, yet I'm getting terrible fps (15-30) on WoW, down from the solid 60 I had before the update.
Am I missing something?
(No dual monitor here, so no real problem for that)

netkas third and now fully working (?) QECI patch is now in zeus. if you have problems, redo the Driver procedure = reinstall driver patch for 10.6.3

10.6.3 Video Corruption on 4890 ZDFC

4890 ZDFC was running well in 10.6.2, updated to 10.6.3 and installed new QE_CI driver but video is corrupted, gets lines, sparkles, all kinds of stuff. Rebooting into my 10.6.2 backup hard drive and video still works fine. Is it possible 10.6.3 will require reflashing the card ROM? I hope not cause I don't think I still have a copy of the original ROM anymore.

Same problem with my Saphire New edition HD4890:

did update to 10.6.3 and had no graphic problems.
Installed QECI via Zeus and after reboot every move of a window shows lines, sparkles and so on.
Installed 10.6.3 again and everything is fine again without qe.

sikzorro, you might be getting one of the pulled QE/CI patches through Zeus. Both you and dbculp should only need the patch linked here if starting from a fresh 10.6.3 install. This one's been triple checked and if you've already applied one of the old patches then there is a fix available here.

Fixed!

"A fix for a fix" fixed what I thought I had fixed, but when I fixed my 4890 it threw a fit! I don't like my 7300GT, not one little bit! It's the 4890 for me, so many thanks Treksdot for "A fix for a fix" and I hope it stays fixed!

with apologies to Theodor Geisel

confusing patch mayhem. up to patch no. 4 now, I checked them with MD5.

again, latest working (?) patch should be Downloaded by Zeus now.

I only pointed you in the right direction dbculp, it's netkas making all this.

Cindori: I can confirm that the QE/CI patch currently linked on netkas' blog, the one with the 13:50 GMT timestamp, is in fact the working patch.

For those with ATI issues...

I had initially ran the Combo update and the third updated patch via Zeus, then rebooted. I was left with one working monitor and a white screen with random black squares appeared just before the login prompt.

Downloaded and installed the fourth (and current) update from Zeus...rebooted...same issue. Reinstalled Combo update, then fourth updated patch, then rebooted. Same result.

Went to Netkas website, grabbed the QE patch as well as the small fix pkg he has on the first post. Installed the small fix patch first then the QE patch. After a reboot of the computer, all is working fine.

Mac Pro, ATI 4890

So can anyone give a simple step-by-step to update to 10.6.3, reading the past two pages and am a bit confused as to what files, fixes and fixes for fixes I need and in what order.

Here is what I have:
Mac Pro 1,1
Sapphire 4890 New Edition

supposedly:

if you have zeus, remove it as the update function was broken in first release.
download again.

open Driver click Update

Now 10.6.3 is in driver list. install.

if you get glitchyness after install, use netkas Fix for Fix www.netkas.org

Just installed the Combo update OS X 10.6.3 and installed the latest QE_CI patch.

I have three monitors: Apple 20" connected to my flashed HIS 4890, a Wacom Cintiq 12 inch connected to the HIS 4890, and an Apple 30" connected to a Mac 4870.

Upon initial boot up the second dvi on the HIS 4890 was not working. This is after the latest QE_CI patch was installed.

After browsing this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/885379/ I saw Cindori's dual-dvi patch. I downloaded it from his link http://groths.org/dualdvi.zip.

The problem has now been fixed. Both my 20" and 12" are working flawlessly off the HIS 4890. There are no more artifacts during boot up either.

One thing I noticed in addition to the artifacts before I installed the dual-dvi patch was that my fans were running full blast - i.e., I installed the combo 10.6.3 update, installed the QE_CI (latest version from Zeus), rebooted, and the fans were a-blazin'. The dual-dvi patch seems to have fixed this problem as well.

Will be making a donation to Cindori for all his work. This is good stuff guys.

EDIT: Donated.

Redneck1089, at what time did you perform the update using Zeus and get the screen artifacts? I suspect that a lot of people used an old version of Zeus to apply a flawed version of the 10.6.3 QE/CI patch. After a fresh install or upgrade to 10.6.3 all one should need is the current QE/CI patch available from netkas' blog. All the dual-dvi patch does is install the ATI framebuffer from 10.6.2 along with the proper device IDs in the 4800 controller kext.(The device ID is the key.) Things might be working for you now but what you've got is a mixing of OS drivers. I highly recommend applying the 10.6.3 combo update and then the 10.6.3 QE/CI patch I've linked previously. The only thing we Mac Pro/4890 users need is the edited Info.plist in the 4800 controller and the modified X2000 kext so that OS X will recognize our cards as legit, nothing else.

The QE_CI I used is with the latest version of Zeus downloaded directly from Cindori's website.

I can try updating yet again, however, and see if it makes a difference.

So you're saying I should update using the Combo 10.6.3 software yet again?

If so I will go back and look for your links and then go from there.

I reran the Combo update and installed the QE_CI patch from Nekas (the 13:50 one) and I'm getting the same results: artifacts on start up and fan spinning excessively.

Just ran Fix for a Fix and it's cleared up the problem nicely. No artifacts on start up or fans spinning.

Zeus always hotlinks to same spot and that spot was updated with netkas latest patch yesterday. Just compare md5.

ill make a qeci patch that includes fixforfix.

Redneck wanna test ? I combined fixforfix and qeci patch to make working patch. works fine for me but If you could be arsed to reinstall combo update and then this and see how things act out. it would help a lotta ppl.
thanks for donation :)

My pleasure. Thanks for all the hard work.

I'll give it a shot, sure. I'm not going to be home until later this evening though. I'll post back with results as soon as I can.

Welp, I had typed up an extensive reply but an errant mis-click took care of that. Instead would you mind doing something for me? With your current working configuration open up the System/Library/Extensions folder and tell me the size in bytes for the following 4 files:

ATI4800Controller.kext - 1,898,242 bytes
ATIFramebuffer.kext - 338,147 bytes
ATIRadeonX2000.kext - 4,880,214 bytes
ATISupport.kext - 734,948 bytes

If any of those differ then that we'll at least have a clue. If you wouldn't mind could you reinstall the 754.2 MB 10.6.3 combo update again followed by the 13:50 QE/CI patch and then tell me the size in bytes for the files in question? I'd like to know why it is we're getting different results from the same upgrade. Thank you in advance.

Just reinstalling the Combo update now. Should be able to give you guys updates within the next 15 minutes.

Here's the size of the kext files. They are slightly different from the sizes you posted.

ATI4800Controller.kext 1,898,165 bytes
ATIFramebuffer.kext 338,147 bytes
ATIRadeonX2000.kext 4,880,078 bytes
ATISupport.kext 734,948 bytes

Going to reinstall the Combo update yet again and try Cindori's patch now.
