So just a quick update from my Sintech short black NVME / Samsung 970EVO 2TB upgrade a while ago. Initially everything went fine, but after the last Firmware Update to 194.000.000 of my MacBook Pro 11,4 I got kernel panics after rebooting the trusty Mac. Turns out I inserted the SSD and adapter too deep or slightly maladjusted in the slot. After numerous retries everything is back to normal now... Hope this info might be of help to some of you. cheers.

Upgraded my lad's 13" MacBook Pro early 2015 yesterday with 1Tb Sabrent Rocket and short genuine Sintech adaptor (3 days China to UK!).

Embarrassingly easy to do and most complicated bit was creating the USB boot drive as Mac downloaded 22Mb file rather than the full thing but a quick Google had dosdude to the rescue. Updated to Mojave before doing it so bootrom went to 186 and restored perfectly from Time Machine onto new drive.

Thanks to all involved in making this possible.

Upgraded my (Early 2015) MBP with Intel SSD 660p 1TB and long Sintech adapter.

Every time I'd leave my laptop after certain time of inactivity it will freeze and the fan would spin at almost max speed.
Definitely some sleep related issue.
Not sure where to start.

I replaced the stock AHCI SSD in my MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2015 with Sabrent 256GB NVMe. I used a $1 adapter that I bought off eBay.

Boot ROM Version: 194.0.0.0.0 (Mojave)

So far no sleep issues and/or kernel panics. battery life does not seem to be affected (but it's still early to say for sure).

Here are my results:

An update: Macbook runs a little bit hotter, and in a 8 hours sleep the Macbook Pro lost around 10% of battery charge.
Is there any workaround to at least get rid of sleep battery issues? all of my settings are default

Option 1:
Set your standbydelayhigh and standbydelaylow values in pmset to something like 600 seconds = 10 minutes and change hibernate to mode 25. This will allow 10 minutes of sleep after you close the lid before the computer turns off everything and hibernates.

Option 2:
Set your hibernate mode to 25 and standby to 0, this will hibernate your Mac immediately after closing the lid.

Whatever you do don't use hibernate mode 3 or 0, these keep giving power to the RAM and SSD respectively and thus consume more battery power when your mac is sleeping.

*Edit
Made a slight mistake, you can use mode 3 since it does power off the SSD and not the ram hence you will have good battery life, just remember to set the standby delay low and high values to something small so when you close the lid it enters hibernate mode after a smaller delay of time and the NVME drive won't consume as much power. The default values are relatively high ~ 24 hours which is why you're observing the drain.

On August 1st, 2019 Apple release a software update named "macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update" and the information listed in the update is the following:
The macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental Update fixes an issue that may prevent certain Macs from waking from sleep properly.

I assume this would come with a bootrom update. Has anyone with a 2013/2014 model replaced the original SSD and applied to update and then replaced their 3rd party NVME and verified if hibernate mode is now supported?

I have test the new "macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update" with the 3rd party NVME with my mid2014 macbook pro model. Everything is still the same, the hibernate issue is still happened.

Was there a bootrom update that came with the supplemental update? I assume you also replaced the original SSD to update the bootrom before replacing and updating the NVME drive?

Yes, I used my original ssd with the supplemental update. Then I replaced and updated the NVME drive. My current bootrom version is 156.0.0.0.0. Does anyone get the new bootrom?

Please, please, forgive me if this has been addressed but this is a VERY long thread to read through!

I have a late-2013 15" MBP. I upgraded to a 1TB Intel 660P using the Sintech sled adapter, and set it up with two partitions with clean installs of Mojave on each one. It seemed to work fine but I had weird booting issues (startup disk setting not sticking) and discovered that I had used an Apple Partition Map and HFS+ to set up my two partitions. I was told in another forum that I shouldn't even be able to boot my computer, but I could. That remains a mystery.

Today I fixed things (or so I thought!): cloned everything off the drive, wiped it & started fresh with a GUID partition map and two APFS partitions. Then cloned back. Now everything works except my speeds (according to Blackmagic Speed Test) are half what they were! Before my "fix", with the "wrong" partition map & format, I was getting around 1500MB/sec read & write, now the speeds are in the 700s. What did I do here? Any way I can get the speeds I was definitely seeing a short while ago? TIA for any help!!

Hi,

If you don't have expected read/write speeds, first you may verify if your Intel 660p still present a 4x link width (you can check in the "NVMExpress" section of "System information").
If it presents a 2x link width you may reseat your Sintech adapter and / or clean the contacts and check the proper state of the insulation tape.

Otherwise, if you have a 4x link you may just... wait : the 660p is a QLC drive...
As such, and especially because you seem to have cloned everything, wiped and restore back your data, you may need that your 660p drive take the time to move data from the SLC cache to QLC data.
QLC drives (as the Crucial P1 and the Intel 660p) are quite fast when the SLC cache is empty buyt may slow down to ~80 MBytes/s while their SLC cache has been filled.
TLC drives have the same behaviour (in a less extent way). MLC drives don't have this behaviour.

You may also wait for Spotlight (mdworker process) to finish its indexing process, which may last for hours and hours...

End of the problem: the Dutch vendor can't give a new Adata SX8200 Pro and today I installed a Samsung 970 EVO Plus, after I updated the firmware, then Mojave from an USB installer and my files and configuration from a Time Machine backup. And it is working!!! I have a MBA early 2015...

Thanks for your report !
Which is the firmware version of your 970 EVO Plus ? I'll test it again and add it back in the compatibility table of post #1

Upgraded my 2013 MBP before I found this thread.

I used used a RIVO NVME Adaptor from Amazon paired with a Crucial P1 500Gb. I also bought an ORICO NVME to USB adaptor to format the drive before install.

So far everything is working with hibernation turned off. Haven't bothered to flash the EFI yet.

No noticeable change in battery life, but notice a bit of heat from the drive.

UPDATE: Everything worked really well with the Crucial drive but decided to swap it out for a Lexar 480G drive for more storage. The Lexar drive has 50% faster write speeds vs the Crucial P1. Read speeds are about the same.

I looked and yes I have a 2x link! I will try your suggestion to re-seat the adapter. I hope that's all it is. Thank you very much for pointing this out.

Unfortunately, cleaning the contacts and reseating the adapter did not fix things - it still shows up as x2 width! I have no insulation tape though, I thought that was not needed with the sled adapter? Should I have tape on there? Thanks again for your help!

I heard people in this thread have resolved this problem by installing a fresh copy of macOS instead of restoring from a TimeMachine backup. Then copy your apps and files manually from the backups that were taken.

I did do fresh installs of macOS (10.14.4), then used Migration Assistant to copy my user account & data from a clone. So I'm not sure if it's worth trying your suggestion – unless Migration Assistant somehow copied over a bad/incorrect extension that causes my MBP to read the drive as 2 lanes rather than 4. That would not be part of a user account's data though, would it?

When I first installed the drive I mistakenly set it up with an Apple Partition Map (not GUID) and two partitions as HFS+. That's when I saw 4x PCIe lanes! I may just go back to that scheme, even though I've been told that the computer can't boot from an APM drive – which is not correct since my computer did boot!

The firmware is "2B2QEXM7" in a 28 MB file and you can download here

Stupid question: I upgraded my original Apple SSD in my late-2013 MacBook Pro (MacBookPro11,2) directly from El Capitan to Mojave, thinking this would add NVMe support. Was this wrong? Does it have to be High Sierra?

You're fine, most of this was written before Mojave was a thing.

Thanks, that's what I thought! I'm still troubleshooting why my new Intel 660P shows up with 2x PCIe lanes instead of 4x. So far, it's been a major fishing expedition as you can tell from the question you just answered!

While I'm here, https://eclecticlight.co/2018/10/31/which-efi-firmware-should-your-mac-be-using-version-3/ says I should have efi/boot rom 156.0.0.0.0, yet my System Information is showing 153.0.0.0.0. Could this be why my drive is at 2x? My Mac is a late-2013 (MacBookPro11,2). Thanks to anyone who can shed light on this for me!

I have put together a write-up as RTFD in TextEdit to summarize the state of upgrading 2013-2014 MacBooks with NVMe drives thus far. The pictures are from an upgrade of the girlfriend's MacBook Air last week.

Have a look in case you are new to this thread - or a regular. :)

Happy to make changes in case there is something incorrect or misrepresented.

Thanks for your contribution!

I've followed all of those and just about to modify system rom.
Mine is mbpr late 2013 15"(MacBookPro11,2). So, in this case, is it okay to extract nvme driver from MacBookPro11,4?

Hey everyone,

After quite a long reading of different forums and the tutorial from @Cmd+Q, I choose to try it myself on my MBP 15" Late 2013. So here what I have currently.

Macbook Pro 11,2 default setup (256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM, i7 @ 2Ghz)
Sintech ST-NGFF2013-C Adapter (the long one)
Sabrent Rocket 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD
MacBook EFI Cable
CH341A Programer
Other things (Screwdrivers, Katpon Tape)

Well, from what I read, I have everything that I'll need. The only thing I don't find is how to get Macbook Pro 2015 11,4 firmware ? I didn't find it at all, and I know sharing it is forbidden. My only question is : how to get it except having a friend with a 2015 MBP ?

Thanks a lot in advance ^^

Does anyone have any experience with the corsair MP510 960gb version in a 2014 MBP? Is it double sided or will it fit using the long sintech adapter? How about any observations on battery life?
