macbook air early 2014 sabrent 2tb nvme. I have hibernation disabled but still several times a day the screen remains black and does not respond. keyboard lighting is on but apple is not. How can I check why it restarts?
The screen stays black when you open the lid to wake it back up?

The screen suddenly goes blank when using it and you have to hold the power button down to get it to boot back up?

This is not necessarily an indication of liquid damage. If it was a backlight problem, it's unlikely it would come and go randomly.

Post your sleep settings.

You've quite well described what happens to me.

How can I check my sleep settings to publish them?

I've seen all sorts of backlight issues and when the LCD cable is partially burnt it will do weird things like that. The one I mentioned above with the bad cable is a good example of that. It will start out with a higher voltage and then flicker until it goes out. I have also seen "stage lights" from backlight issues and flickering and of course completely blacked out. I wouldn't rule it out.

I understand what you are saying and it is possible.

When a MacBook Air is exposed to liquid, the liquid needs to short two or more pins on the logic board's LVD connection. Once shorted, I have never seen one work intermittently. I have had 2 where this happened and the backlight never worked after being shorted.

The problem being described is indicative of hibernation issues with nvme drives inside non-2015 Airs and Pros. I experienced the same thing with a mid-2014 13" Pro.

Since my J6100 Adapter was broken, I didn't want to spend another 50 Euros for a new one. I just bought a SOIC-Test-Clip for 5 Euros and successfully patched my 159.0.0.0.0, which was upgraded with 10.15.4 update even without original SSD.
I think there is no need buying the expensive cable, unless you are professional and patch BootROMs regularly.

I have a Mid 2014 15 inch MBP.

Does anybody know how I can avoid BootROM-Upgrades in the future without missing macOS Upgrades? Or do I have to re-patch every time a macOS Update comes.

If it’s not too much to ask, would you mind sharing your dump with me? I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro too and I can’t update the efi to use my nvme drive. You can 0 out the serial if you’re worried about that...

Yes, of course I can share my dump with you. Which dump do you mean? The patched one, or the clean (original) one? In the patched Version the NVME driver is taken from the 2015 version. That brings better compatibility for NVME drives but error messages can randomly but rarely occur. You can ignore those messages.
And if I remove the serial, I could directly put in your serial, if you want me to. It’s the same work erasing then replacing. You can choose.

I suppose the clean one? I don’t mind having to disable hibernation. And you don’t have to put mine in thank you!!

run "sudo pmset -g" without quotes from terminal.

Does the black screen happen when on battery, charger, or both? There are separate sleep settings when running on battery and running on a charger.

I'm not a sleep expert at all. Good information here too: https://www.dssw.co.uk/reference/pmset.html

Maybe someone else can offer a solution too.

MacBook Air (6,2) 13" mid 2013 (daily driver since 2014)
OS: macOS Catalina 10.15.4
Boot-ROM: 120.0.0.0.0
CPU: 1,4 GHz Core i5
RAM: 8 GB
Charge cycles: 1198
New SSD: 480 GB Corsair MP510 (CSSD-F480GBMP510B)

Installed the SSD yesterday, deactivated hibernation and activated TRIM. Closed the lid with a battery charge of 59% and woke up to 54%, which seems to be good. But yesterday I noticed the rapid discharge while using the device, that didn't seem to be normal to me. Maybe macOS was doing some stuff in the background, because I had to reinstall lots of apps. I think I'll transfer my important stuff from my external HDD back to the device and let the system do it's thing for a day and then test the battery life afterwards, should get more reliable results.

Since my battery has exceeded the limit of 1000 cycles, I was planning to get it swapped by Apple for 139€ but I also took into consideration to do it myself with an iFixit battery (90€). Can anyone recommend the iFixit batteries for the MacBook Air 6,2?

It looks like my MBA has an issue with regulating the auto-brightness of the keyboard and the screen for reasons I don't know. I always have to manually adjust the brightness, although it was working seamlessly before I changed the SSD.

Hey guys !

So I have a 2015 MacBook Pro with the dual graphics 15 inch, a kick ass machine and quick ! I want to upgrade the SSD in there, and wanted to know if OWC’s aura X2 has been corrected where it won’t cause sleep issues.

With the samsung SSD do I really need an adapter with this ? If so, what Samsung SSD will work in this machine and not give issues with regards to sleep ? I meant to say I am running Mojave and Catalina.

Thanks

The 2015 MacBook should not have a problem with sleep.

Hi Guys,

Yesterday i bought a samsung evo 970 plus for my macbook air 2017, and also I bought the long adapter. I've installed the samsung on the adapter and then on the macbook air, then I put a stick with Catalina and run the disk utility to format the ssd, but when i hit the delete to change de format of the ssd, it take some seconds and start to format it, and then it gets kernel panic, i've tried several times. What would be the error? PLEASE HELP :'(

Is the 970 Plus running the latest firmware? Are you choosing the option to view all devices in disk utility? You are clicking on the "erase" option?

I've click on the "erase" option and selected de AFPS format.
Its the latest firmware? I think no? I didnt do anything. Can it be the problem? firmware update?

The Samsung 970 Evo Plus is know to cause problems if the it is not running the latest firmware. The Air needs to be running at least a High Sierra bootrom.

The MacBook's bootrom gets updated when installing macOS. What OS was the MacBook running before installing the Samsung?
