I'm pretty sure I had the latest Mojave before upgrading to Catalina. I always upgrade the OS on release day.

Just an FYI the latest Mojave is 10.14.6 and was released towards the end of January (Edit another security update was released on March 24, 2020 as well and it could have been this version that updated the Boot ROM). When I went from 10.14.5 (or it may have been the Jan 2020 to Mar 2020 version, not exactly sure) to 10.14.6 I went from Boot ROM 158.0.0.0 to 159.0.0.0.

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro. I bought it back in August and installed a 1TB ADATA XPG SX6000 Pro 1TB NVMe paired with a Sintech Adapter. It had all been working well. A few days ago I go to use the computer and there is blinking folder with a question mark on my screen.

What I've done so far:

I reset the PRAM and SMC. No dice.
I've swapped out the Drive for the stock apple drive that came with the computer. It boots fine.

I put the XPG Drive in an external enclosure and can boot off of it No problems. I run Disk First Aid no Problems.

I tried to put it back in the internal slot and get the blinking question mark folder again.
I boot off the Apple drive in an external enclosure and look for the drive installed in the internal slot. It's not showing up.

Has anyone else had one of the Sintech adapters fail on them?
Any chance Apple released an update that "sabotaged" the adapter?

An ideas for other things to try?

Thanks!

Someone commented above about using Kapton tape or some other insulator to avoid having the pins short out on the metal housing. Try that first, I doubt the connector failed because they are nothing more than trace wires that map one interface to another. If you have a microscope you could look to see if any of the solder joints on the connector are broke or if it may be shorting out when you have it installed. I've had the same thing happen before. The flashing question mark folder just means it cannot find an operating system which means either you don't have one installed properly on the drive or the drive is malfunctioning (i.e., drive pins are shorting to ground as described above). Good luck and let us all know what fixes it.

For me, on a 15 inch 2015 MBP, Kapton tape was the answer. First at the end of the adapter, reducing the amount of metal exposed on the pins being inserted into the socket. That fixed most of my problems. Was still getting a few problems, so Kapton tape on the surface underneath the SSD. No idea if the latter did anything, of if just reseating it fixed it, but so far so good.

Can you clarify where you placed the tape?
In my picture below did you use it on red line or the green line?

Red line; however, it looks like you have the newer adapter whereby kapton tape isn't required.

Yes, it certainly looks like I was not running the latest Mojave before updating to Catalina.

Alright here's a weird twist: I'm running 10.14.6 on a MacBook Pro 11,3. My BootROM is 156.0.0.0. Eclectic Light and korypostma indicate I should have 159.0.0.0.

Can anybody explain that? Is it possible the old BootROM is giving me the problem with my third party SSD?

Hello,

I cannot wrap my head around the best possible power settings (without hacking bootrom) for the following scenario:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)
2,8 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
10.15.4 (19E287)
EFI Version: MBP111.88Z.F000.B00.2002052022 (Boot ROM Version: 159.0.0.0.0)
+ Sintech ST-NGFF2013 short
+ Sabrent SSD Interno 1TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2280

Heat and speed is ok, but sleeping settings are confusing / not working.
E.g. when battery drains out, computer needs to restart and I get error message (Sleep Wake failure in EFI ... 0x0000001f). [On long travels or overnight it can unfortunately happen computer drains out, annoying to restart, Error Message etc]

Question 1: Did anybody figure out the optimal settings (like standby, hibernation, autopoweroff, etc) ?

Question 2: How do you totally reset the settings I can see typing"pmset -g"
SMC doesn't seem to do that.

Thanks!

Did you upgrade to 10.14.6 using the original Apple SSD? If not, this would explain why the bootrom didn't update. Afaik, only 2015 MacBooks accept a bootrom update with a third party nvme drive.

Originally, no, I updated with the 3rd party SSD. But I just ran the update with an Apple SSD installed in the internal SSD Slot and it did not update the BootROM. I'm going to install Catalina on the Apple SSD and see if that updates the BootROM.

Does anyone know what the first BootROMs to support the 3rd party NVMe's were? I think it was High Sierra that allowed the use of the 3rd Party NVMe's. Would it have been the BootROM that allowed that?

Yes, High Sierra is what was needed.

It's odd that the bootrom did not update with an original Apple SSD.

I've seen this happen before and it is because the SSD may soon be failing. If that is the case then it will not update. In addition if it does not have two SSD sensors as shown in ASD 162 then it will not update the boot rom to 158.0.0.0. I have noticed that the update to 159.0.0.0 seems to work with various NVME drives. So it is a bit shocking that his doesn't seem to update. Some MBAs would not update unless I updated to HS or Mojave first and then to Catalina. Perhaps that could be part of the problem as well? Anyhow, let us know what fixes it for you so that we can update the first post with our accumulated knowledge.

So I just realized I don't have an original Apple SSD. I bought this machine refurbed from Mac of All Trades and have been assuming it was an original Apple SSD. After upgrading to Catalina the BootROM still didn't update. I was really confused and went back into the System Profiler and looked closely to discover the SSD is actually an Aura Pro X2 from OWC. 🤦‍♂️

While this was an interesting tangent I'm still not sure why my ADATA NVMe used to work and now doesn't. . .
I'm going to order a short form of the adapter and see if that makes a difference.

Try upgrading to 10.15.4 002 which came out just 3 weeks ago. Hopefully then it will update the Boot ROM and please report back whether or not it does. Perhaps it is only from 158 to 159 that doesn't do the SSD check.

The Catalina Upgrade installed 10.15.4 - I'm not sure how to confirm if that is equivalent to 10.15.4 002 though. Is there a build number I can check against? It did NOT update the BootROM though.

I had another realization though. Since I discovered that the "native" SSD that is working is not an Apple Genuine SSD that rules out a BootROM conflict. Correct? The problem has to be with the adapter I'm using.

I've never seen a post from a 2013 or 2014 owner say that their MacBook accepted a bootrom update with a nvme drive inside when upgrading tree OS.

I've had three early 2015 13" Airs accept a bootrom update with an HP ex900, Intel 600p, and a Lexar nm600.

Hi,
Just wanted to chime in on my experience.
Macbook Pro 13 Inch 11.1 mid 2014
10.15.4
Bootrom 157.0.0.0 (used the internet recovery both times + TM backup)

Edit: used this copy of the Sintech Green Short Adapter with success: Zer One adapter

Previously went for a 500GB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS that I used for a month, but the heat generated was quite a burden.

So I recently switched to a Corsair 1TB MP510. R/W speeds are the same since it's the PCIE 2.0 4x that limits the SSD anyway (I get 1400 / 1400 give or take).

I gained around 5 to 8 degrees in Idle / light usage (970 EVO drawing 0.75A vs 0.16A for the MP510).

Only downside is that the 970 had no sleep issues whatsoever - never had any hibernation problem nor any panic report during the course of the month. (with standard settings - sleep mode 3)

The MP510 does have those issues (got it 3 night in a row). But I can live with it, as it runs much cooler and draws less.

Tried the NVMeFix as well but doesn't seem to work on mid 2014 MBP.

Those are my 2cts

Hey,

I used the MP510 too, but the 512GB version instead of 1TB. I installed it on my mid-2013 MacBook Air.

I deactivated hibernation after I installed the drive. There's still a higher power draw than there was with the original Apple SSD. It looks like I get a battery life of about 6-7h, which is still ok for a 6 year old battery I guess.

The main problem I have since I switched the SSDs is with auto-regulation of display and keyboard backlight. It rarely adjusts the display and keyboard backlight to the surrounding light conditions, have to do it manually. Have you faced similar issues?

Edit:

Also started to use "Macs Fan Control" to monitor the temps. Since I mostly use my MBA attached to an external display, I noticed the temps are reaching 80-90°C when I do normal browsing (with Firefox) with a few tabs and have a few documents opened at the same time (MacBook clamshell is opened during use). So I started manually adjusting the fan speed, has helped a lot with the temps so far. Without an external monitor attached, temps are around 50°C during normal office/web usage.

Im having wake issue:

  • early 2015 13" MBPr
  • WD Black SN750 2tb
  • used CCC to clone the drive
  • Sintech adapter (i actually bought 2)

Using both adapter exhibits the same behavior with sleep/hibernate - opening the lid will either restarted the laptop, black screen to restart, or crashed message.

When I was on Mojave 10.14.6 with apple drive, bootrom was at 186.
I cloned to SN750 and replaced the apple drive, everything worked fine, as long as it stays on. When put to sleep (close lid), almost everytime i open the lid, it will either be restarted, black street to restart, or crashed message.
I updated to Catalina with the SN750, bootrom remained the same at 186. Still getting wake issue.
Popped the apple drive back in, updated to Catalina, bootrom updated to 190. Swapped the drive again.
SN750 with Catalina, bootrom at 190, still experiencing wake issue.

Ive read a lot of success story with the early 2015 13" and no issues with sleep/hibernate. Just want to know what else am I missing.

I have disabled hibernate before and it didnt do anything to resolve the issue.

Does this happen if you do a fresh installation rather than restoring a backup?
