If you have the latest CCC, you can do a fresh install and then, restore only the Data volume snapshot with your data.
Maybe that helps.
Thats good to know! I do have the latest CCC. will try to go that route.

would this be the correct procedure:
- clone/backup with CCC (does my external drive need to be formatted to APFS for proper backup/clone?)
- create bootable usb osx catalina install
- fresh install to SN750
- install CCC
- run CCC to restore Data volume

did a fresh install. didnt restore from back up yet. just testing to see if it will crash typically from opening lid. this time the crash is from leaving the lid open and drive went idle/sleep. when waking from pressing space bar key, it crashed. error was displaying "nvme: fatal error occured..." from the crash log.

Thanks for the update.

Is the WD running the latest firmware? Maybe it needs an update?

Do you have another nvme drive to try?

not sure if WD rolls out firmware updates for the SN750. I cant find it anywhere.
edit: there is a firmware updater from WD

Maybe it needs an update like the Samsung Evo Plus.
the updater doesnt work. at least i dont think it is for this drive. it asked to be plugged in, im assuming its for external drives.

had the nvme in the laptop and scanned with firmware updater app, no result.
put the nvme in enclosure and plug into usb, ran a scan with firmware updater app, no result.

Maybe the drive isn't compatible? Everything seems in order.

Hey,

I used the MP510 too, but the 512GB version instead of 1TB. I installed it on my mid-2013 MacBook Air.

I deactivated hibernation after I installed the drive. There's still a higher power draw than there was with the original Apple SSD. It looks like I get a battery life of about 6-7h, which is still ok for a 6 year old battery I guess.

The main problem I have since I switched the SSDs is with auto-regulation of display and keyboard backlight. It rarely adjusts the display and keyboard backlight to the surrounding light conditions, have to do it manually. Have you faced similar issues?

Edit:

Also started to use "Macs Fan Control" to monitor the temps. Since I mostly use my MBA attached to an external display, I noticed the temps are reaching 80-90°C when I do normal browsing (with Firefox) with a few tabs and have a few documents opened at the same time (MacBook clamshell is opened during use). So I started manually adjusting the fan speed, has helped a lot with the temps so far. Without an external monitor attached, temps are around 50°C during normal office/web usage.
Shine the flashlight from your cellphone into the webcam and see if the brightness of your display changes. Cover the sensor as well and see if that works. If those don't work you can download ASD 156 to test it in the interactive tests. You can also open your machine and make sure the 12-pin connector is firmly attached near the fan under the LIO cable. If it still doesn't work then either you have some corrosion damage in the circuit on the logic board or you need a new screen. You can use a cheap 11 or 13" cracked screen off of eBay to test your light sensor circuit on your logic board. But before I would do all of that why not try a PRAM/NVRAM reset and perhaps even reset the SMC?

Hey everyone! Thanks for compiling all this info, it's been incredibly helpful. I upgraded my 2013 MacBook Air with a 1TB Crucial P1 SSD, and got a matt card from Chipmunk with firmware I patched to support hibernation. I'm using Mojave, 10.14.6. Everything has been working fine 99% of the time, but I hit the following panic this morning. Has anyone seen this crash before, or does anyone have suggestions on how to prevent this from happening?

At first I reset the SMC, it only fixed the auto-brightness of the display, but not the auto-regulation of the keyboard backlight. Then I did the reset of the PRAM/NVRAM and it magically fixed the auto-regulation of the keyboard backlight too. Thanks a lot!

I have put together a write-up as RTFD in TextEdit to summarize the state of upgrading 2013-2014 MacBooks with NVMe drives thus far. The pictures are from an upgrade of the girlfriend's MacBook Air last week.

Hi Cmd+Q, everything is fine but it failed on booting my macbook:
  • Dowload the dmg->extract driver(MBP114.fd)->flash it back https://updates.cdn-apple.com/2019/...4e-4a0a-8f82-7cc90315dbcc/macOSUpd10.14.5.dmg
  • but I can not turn on my macbook after flashing the new modified rom(only the fan is on, screen is black)
  • then I flash the original one, I can still trun on my macbook
  • Anyone has the same weird case with mine ? Thanks
  • Finally, I use another macbook , extract driver and flash it again , it works like a charm, Thanks and please close this issue(in my case I have to extract driver from this one "macOSUpd10.14.5.dmg" with another macbook 13" 2017 to workaround it, Thanks for this great discussion thread )

Hey everyone,
I have a MBP 13" 2014 and I want to upgrade the SSD, that's the case.
At the very beginning I started with YouTube videos and it seemed pretty easy with adapters, but when I did some research I found this thread which is AMAZING. Made me curious about this topic.
I've been reading all over the Wiki post, also read back and forth everything from page 88 (because a lot happened till then on the software and even the hardware side) till the last page and I have mixed feelings.
I did a small list of the SSDs you guys mentioned with positive and negative experiences, I constantly filled the list with the mentioned pros and cons and even the - possibly - best picks did crashes, panics, freezes as long as I read.
I mean Corsair MP510, ADATA SX8200 Pro and the Sabrent one (although it's not available in the EU) seemed the best choice so far, they still have crashes, extra power consumption and things like these.
For me, reliability and long battery life matters. Even if it costs 2.5-3x more... :(
In this case should I go for a used Apple SSD rather than 3rd party solutions? I don't want to lose battery life and even my trust in my equipment since I never had any crash or kernel panic although I use my MBP since 2015 and I had my first iMac in 2010 and upgraded last year with a new one. I have zero issues so far.
So just in case if I lost something...are there any solutions which are pretty close to Apple SSD in terms of power consumption and reliability?
Thank you and keep the thread running like this, it's more than useful. :)

I successfully used a Transcend PCIe SSD 220S 1TB (TS1TMTE220S) with Sintech Adapter in a MacBook Pro Retina 13" (Mid 2014, MacBookPro11,1).

I updated the firmware before I started, booting from an external SSD with a plain High Sierra system on it. Although Security Update 2019-002 was installed on that external SSD before, App Store proposed it again (presumably because of the firmware not being up-to-date).

I bought both the long and the short black Sintech adapters and tried them both. Both came with black tape already protecting the backside of the connector and just worked, but I noticed some minor differences:
  • The long version has a connector, that will allow you to easily insert the m.2 SSD in a 45° angle, producing more pressure on the pins when you bring it down and fix it in the final position. (Post #3950 has a nice picture of that.)
The short version has a slide-in connector, similar to the one on the motherboard.
  • Because of the different type of connector, the short version is also slightly thinner. In the A1502 housing that made the difference between the bottom case closing easily or not.
The performance (4x PCIe lanes with both adapters) was quite good for a Mid 2014 MacBook. Blackmagic reported 1360/1520 MB/s, and ADM 59 MB/s random 4k read!
View attachment 831826

The Transcend 220S SSDs have a nominal speed of 3500/2800 MB/s, DRAM and SLC cache, and TLCs. At currently 150€ / 180$ it's a good deal I think. Would be curious to see some tests by @gilles_polysoft and inclusion in the table. If there are more positive reports, we might add it to the whitelist of compatible SSDs.

Hi , I need assist from this, I also bought a Transcend 220S SSDs nmve 1tb , however during reinstalling ok via USB drive, while remain 4 minutes my mac keep restart , and back to recovery menu, I had try many time its still same
do you think is adaptor issue or compatible issue
my mac is MacBook pro 2015 early

I hope any one here can help

Hi guys - I really need som help here (please) !!

Just installed a fresh new Sintech Adapter and WD SN750 1TB SSD bought from Amazon in my iMac 27” Late 2015 (running Catalina 10.15.4, SilentKnight reports EFI firmware 176.0.0.0.0 is up to date) both parts should be compatible following various articles that i found.

But my Mac can't find the disk in Disk Utility (with expanded the view) ,-(((
I boot into recovery mode from a USB-boot (also Catalina 10.15.4) and have also tried via a USB-Ubuntu with the disk utility with no luck .....

If there are more positive reports, we might add it to the whitelist of compatible SSDs.

how to update the firmware ?

You are using a Catalina or Mojave USB installer?

Tried re-installing the drive and adapter?

Are you able to test the drive in another Mac or MacBook?

I have done clean installs and restores from Time Machine. Both worked fine on early 2015 13" Airs.

Im having wake issue:

  • early 2015 13" MBPr
  • WD Black SN750 2tb
  • used CCC to clone the drive
  • Sintech adapter (i actually bought 2)

Using both adapter exhibits the same behavior with sleep/hibernate - opening the lid will either restarted the laptop, black screen to restart, or crashed message.

When I was on Mojave 10.14.6 with apple drive, bootrom was at 186.
I cloned to SN750 and replaced the apple drive, everything worked fine, as long as it stays on. When put to sleep (close lid), almost everytime i open the lid, it will either be restarted, black street to restart, or crashed message.
I updated to Catalina with the SN750, bootrom remained the same at 186. Still getting wake issue.
Popped the apple drive back in, updated to Catalina, bootrom updated to 190. Swapped the drive again.
SN750 with Catalina, bootrom at 190, still experiencing wake issue.

Ive read a lot of success story with the early 2015 13" and no issues with sleep/hibernate. Just want to know what else am I missing.

I have disabled hibernate before and it didnt do anything to resolve the issue.
Comments in amazon are saying that it works ok, did you try the short Sintech adapter ? Getting this ssd next week so I will see if it is your issue or the ssd does not work fine on the Mac

if you can wait i did order the 2 adapters on amazon to check which works

So I just realized I don't have an original Apple SSD. I bought this machine refurbed from Mac of All Trades and have been assuming it was an original Apple SSD. After upgrading to Catalina the BootROM still didn't update. I was really confused and went back into the System Profiler and looked closely to discover the SSD is actually an Aura Pro X2 from OWC. 🤦‍♂️

While this was an interesting tangent I'm still not sure why my ADATA NVMe used to work and now doesn't. . .
I'm going to order a short form of the adapter and see if that makes a difference.

A quick Status update on my 2014 MacBook Pro that no longer boots off an ADATA NVMe:

I installed a genuine Apple SSD for the MacBook and installed 10.15.2.02. That upgraded my BootROM to 157.0.0.0.0
I upgraded that install to 10.15.4 and that bumped the BootROM to 159.0.0.0.0
That did not allow me to boot from the ADATA SSD.

I received a new snitch adapter. It also didn't solve my problem. The computer is still not recognizing the ADATA SSD in the internal slot. It also doesn't see one of two Aura Pro Drives by OWC. (They use the native connection for the MacBook SSD's) I ran Apple Diagnostics and it returned a message saying "there may be an issue with the storage device." It also returned reference code VDH002. A quick search returns that some people have identified a corrupt EFI causes this code and behavior on 2015 MacBook Pros. Any chance it's the reason for my problems?

Press and hold "option" to start. Because the boot disk guid in NVRAM has changed.

Holding option will allow you to select a boot drive. If there is no boot drive selected in the macOS preferences, the MacBook should automatically boot from the Adata if that is the only drive connected with a working OS.

(from amazon, try this)
Additional steps:

4a) for me the Disk Utility would not show the Drive, so what I had to do was shut down the MacBook.

4b) When the device has fully shut down press the Power button again, when you press the power button hold down the following Keys: 'Command/cmd' and 'Option (sometimes this is shared with the alt key as it is with mine)' and 'P' and 'R'

4c) Hold the 4 keys, you will here the MacBook chime, keep it held until it Chimes again and then release

4d) After then wait for the MacBook to boot up into the Recovery Partition and look in Disk Utility, you should see the drive in Disk Utility now. The laptop will reboot a few times before booting into the Recovery environment
