Hello All,

Would someone experienced on here be kind enough to give me a quick idea of whether upgrading my MacBook Pro will be problematic or not, please?

I've read the first post and some of the later pages, but still a little uncertain whether my machine would need an EFI boot mod or anything else to work correctly with sleep, etc., or if I'd be good to go with just a replacement and reinstall? It's my main work computer, so that's the reason for checking.

Not sure which specs are most relevant, main ones below, but happy to provide other info if it helps!

MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013
2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
16GB 1600MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2 GB
Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Mac OS Big Sur 11.2.3 (20D91)

I would be intending to install:
Sintech adapter (latest version)
Crucial P2 2TB

Unless there are better options for less glitches/reliability/battery, etc.?
If you are running Big Sur with the original Apple's SSD, you should already have the latest BootRom version and therefore, you will not have any issues with a P2 + short Sintech adapter, IMO.

I'm trying to install a Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 - 2Tb, used two different Sintech adapters as I thought the first one wasn't good (and the Amazon "original" one wasn't available). Waited for the good one and still can't see that with the Disk Utility in Recovery Boot.

Am I missing some step? Something obvious?

MBP 15" Mid2014 with 10.14.6 and 430.0.0.0.0 BootROM here.

I'm thinking of buying an external box to check if at least the Sabrent is alive on its own (suspect DOA?) but I wanted to be sure I'm not missing something here. I thoroughly read this wiki article and I'm out of ideas.

Thanks in advance

I have an MBP 15" mid2014 and 430.0.0.0.0 BootRom running on a Silicon Power 1Tb (ECFM22.6) + short Sintech adapter without any issues.

Initially, I had the same issue. I had Catalina at the time with BootRom 159.0.0.0.0 if I am not mistaken, and the Recovery Mode could not identify the SSD + Sintech. Then, I booted from an external CCC USB clone and then was able to format the NVME installed in the MBP. Once formated, the MPB was able to identify the NVME.

I described that in post #6467

I hope that helps.

Thank you, that's really helpful. I really need the extra disk space and my MacBook is otherwise still a really good machine for my needs - it would be great to give it a new lease of life!

Thanks for your all effort to contribute this topic. I installed a wd sn550 1TB with cheap aliexpress adapter in my early 2015 MBP 2 months ago. In this 2 months I get 2 kernel panic. I installed ssdpmenabler.kext. DO you think this kext is usual suspect for the panics?

if you are already on Big Sur and install a new ssd, you always have your old ssd that you could revert to...so no risk. Just make sure you disconnect the battery from the board when you swap and buy the short Sintech adapter.

Thanks!

Well, no risk apart from £200 on the P2 and adapter ;)

Sorry, but can I ask again - what do you guys mean by the 'short' Sintech adapter? Is this a particular model number, or revision I should be looking for? E.g. I was going to go with this one -

Thanks could very well be- i noticed the drive was a little skewed (by <1mm, hardly noticable, see pic) so after cleaning I reseated it as centered on the screw as i could.

picture of skewing:

Let's see how long it lasts this time.

Just an update, I found that I've had no crashes after nearly 12 days uptime. My issue now points to the contacts on the ssd not being clean or the SSD being unseated (see the above post for a pic). I am not ruling out sleep bugs or heat issues as I now have SSDPMenabler and NVMEFix running and sleep was disabled for most of the 12 days.

My Setup:
Mojave 10.14.6 (18G7016)
MacBookAir7,2
Intel Core i5 1.6 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 426.0.0.0.0 (Big Sur)
Sabrent Rocket 1TB + Sintec short adapter

iStat indicated the following for idle power draw.
No kexts - 0.17 A
NVMeFix - 0.16 A
SsdPmEnabler - 0.02 A

N.b. I kept my macbook plugged in and awake by having VLC paused on a video. This prevented sleep and prolonged the kernel wake time. In hindsight the lack of sleep events could have prevented kernel panics.

Next I will remove SSDPMEnabler and NVMEFix and not keep the laptop awake and see if the machine remains stable in normal/heavy work use.

Maybe heat dissipation plays a part. The 2015 Air has very little air flow. These SSDs are designed for use in desktop cases with good airflow. I may try to install some copper shims and heat conducting thermal pads so that the outer case can dissipate heat away from the SSD, if I experience any issues.

Code:
$ uptime
11:17 up 11 days, 20:43, 3 users, load averages: 2.26 2.64 2.51

edit: typos, clarification

Is the 'short' one just the latest one available, or do I have to look out for a particular model number/revision?
I bought mine in April and May 2020. Don't know about the model/revision #s.
I upgraded two macs, though: a MPB 15" mid2014 and a MBAir 13" early 2015 with one month between the upgrades.
For the MPB, I bought the Sintech adapter from the Sintech website. It took around 15 to 20 days to arrive. After that, I bought a 500 Gb Silicon Power from Amazon.ca along with the Sintech adapter from Amazon.ca. Both disk and adapter arrived in the same pack shipped from Silicon Power in the USA.

Anyone noticed bootrom update with macOS Big Sur 11.2.3 release? Thanks.

check this page for the latest boot roms for recent Macs:

If your BootRom is new enough you should now get bootrom updates as a normal OS update. The update will require a reboot. I got the latest Big Sur bootrom update in Mojave without replacing my SSD or installing Big Sur.

Thanks!

Hello, my laptop is Macbook 2015 early.
I replace my old ssd to WD SN550 500G . I first installed Catalina latest with SN550. the hibernate issue was there
So I installed bigsur with old ssd to upgrade boot rom, and replace SN550 back.
the boot rom version is 426.0.0.0.0 but issue still there.
Then I flash the ROM of SN550 like forum above. and installed Lilu and NVMeFix.
It still failed to wake up after long sleep. The screen showed kernel panic warning

PS. I am using default pmset options.
What should I do ? Thanks

For those using/installing WD SN550 SSD

Mind updating the firmware to the version 211210WD prior installation of the macOS

SN550 with earlier FW versions suffer from hibernation detection issues, especially on MacBook Pro 13 2015 (Even considering the fact that the NVME DXE driver is totally OK with hibernation on custom SSDs)

My theory is that the startup delay of the ssd aka slow transition through power states causes timeout on Mac EFI and the system considers it as a physical drive disconnect. Somehow this should be corrected with the last FW.

PS You need a Windows machine to either make a live USB flasher or a Windows install and WD SSD Dashboard
I am using SN550 and macbook 2015 early right now. I installed catalina . And then I upgraded SSD firmware. now the firmware version is 211210WD. But the hibernate issue still there. Should I try to reinstall Catalina?

Interesting.

Post your setup, like this:

My Setup:
Mojave 10.14.6 (18G7016)
MacBookAir7,2
Intel Core i5 1.6 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 426.0.0.0.0 (Big Sur)
Sabrent Rocket 1TB + Sintec short adapter

iStat indicated the following for idle power draw.
No kexts - 0.17 A
NVMeFix - 0.16 A
SsdPmEnabler - 0.02 A

add maybe screenshot the speeds (blackmagic speed test) and screenshot SSD tempratures (istat menu).

Also save and post here of the kernel panic logs. Copies of logs up to one month old should be in the /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports folder as .panic files. I recommend pastebin for sharing these. See this page if you want to know more: https://eclecticlight.co/2020/08/11/reading-a-panic-log-in-catalina/

Some more things to try:

Does it happen every time your laptop sleeps? (if so, it is good you can repeat the panic and find the cause)

Have you tried NVRAM and SMC resets?

Have you tried a fresh reinstall of Catalina, to see if the issue is still there? Was the issue still there in Big Sur?

Have you tried another drive/the original to see if the issue is drive specific?

Have you cleaned the contacts and ensured the SSD and sintech are properly seated? (I doubt is relevent but maybe helps)

My Setup:
Catalina 10.15.7 (19H524)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
Boot ROM Version: 426.0.0.0.0 (Big Sur)
WD SN550 500G + NVMe adapter from taobao.com ( exactly same as sintech)
Temperature: 44 Celsius

Panic log: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/NSPK8MSKmC/
Info: default pmset settings latest WD SN550 firmware (211210WD) with latest BootROM and latest NVMeFix.kext

Does it happen every time your laptop sleeps?
No. It happened when I closed the case and leave it alone for about a day.
Have you tried NVRAM and SMC resets?
Yes.
Have you tried a fresh reinstall of Catalina, to see if the issue is still there?
No. But I flash the SSD firmware and change it back to my macbook.
Have you tried another drive/the original to see if the issue is drive specific?
I installed latest Lilu and NVMeFix. They doesn't work
Have you cleaned the contacts and ensured the SSD and sintech are properly seated?
Yes. I have checked the adapter is clean and installed correctly.

Hello,

Will the hibernation issue occurs if uninstall/remove Lilu.kext and NVMeFix.kext?

So considering that the list of recommended drives has been updated, I wonder if it would be worthwhile to upgrade my Sabrent Rocket 2tb f(purchased last year) to the Crucial P2 2tb, purely based on power consumption? Does anyone have experience with the Crucial P2 2tb? How's the power consumption, is it reliable? As far as I'm concerned the Sabrent has been very reliable, and in a period of over a year I've only had 1 kernel panic (so no major issues)! But there's one exemption to my remarks, because the power consumption is very poor. When I'm running on battery power, the thing would only last me an hour or so. Would that actually improve with the P2 2tb? Anyone?

My Setup:
Catalina 10.15.7 (19H524)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
Boot ROM Version: 426.0.0.0.0 (Big Sur)
WD SN550 500G + NVMe adapter from taobao.com ( exactly same as sintech)
Temperature: 44 Celsius

Panic log: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/NSPK8MSKmC/
Info: default pmset settings latest WD SN550 firmware (211210WD) with latest BootROM and latest NVMeFix.kext

Does it happen every time your laptop sleeps?
No. It happened when I closed the case and leave it alone for about a day.
Have you tried NVRAM and SMC resets?
Yes.

What is the result of this command?
Code:
kextstat | grep -v com.apple

temp looks ok if a little high.

Be aware clones can have issues. You might try sintech if it's an option for you.

this is unreadable try https://pastebin.com/

still it is good that you can repeat it.

Yes.

I would suggest trying a separate fresh install on your new SSD to rule out any software issues.

To be clear not driver, but SSD drive. Try your old SSD, see if you can replicate the issue.

I'm going to try without NVMeFix nd SSDPMenabler- these should not be nessasery.
Have you cleaned the contacts and ensured the SSD and sintech are properly seated?
Yes. I have checked the adapter is clean and installed correctly.
How did you check know was clean? Mine visually looked clean but I cleaned with isopropyl anyway and had not issues since.

Please do take a photo of your SSD in situ, in case there is any issue you have not noticed.

The other thing to try is another SSD brand.

all the best!

Hello. The Lilu and NVMeFix can't be unload according to my test.
Actually, there is a way to unload/uninstall these kext. You can refer the same way as uninstalling SsdPmEnabler (https://github.com/kvic-z/SsdPmEnabler), but it must be done by running your MBP in safe mode (At least, that is the way I managed to unload/uninstall these kext before after seeing no changes in current level using these kext. Hopefully, there is much simpler way if anyone here can help). SsdPmEnabler works fine on its own, maybe because I used Crucial P2.

If you manage to unload/uninstall them, and the hibernation issue still occur, at least we may exclude the possibility of these kexts are the culprit.
