Make sure your SN750 firmware also updated. WD has a tendency to be hit or miss in term of firmware version compatibility.
Gonna give it a try, as updating to Monterey/476.0.0.0.0 as DeltaMac suggested did not bring any significant changes, sadly.

Thank you all for your help, my new year's resolution is that I'll make it through this hellish ordeal!
What @otosan meant was to check if your SSD's firmware is up to date. You can check this by installing Windows on the SSD and running the WD proprietary software to check its firmware. If it is not up to date, the software will update it.

Hey everybody :)
For some reason, Crucial P3 is cheaper in my country and faster than P2, and P2 for some reason is QLC (new revisions?). Should I buy P3 instead, then? Also, in general, what really changed about the list of performance/price? Are there any new great options out there? Thanks

7 - Troubleshooting steps for kernel panics, crashes or instability
A small number of members have reported issues around stability and kernel panics after upgrading to an aftermarket SSD. These issues are quite rare, so don't panic! We have a 10 step plan.

If you are experiencing crashes or kernel panics especially around sleep/wake, try the following steps:
  1. Make sure the machine's boot ROM is the latest version. Check your version in "About This Mac" / "System Report" under Boot ROM Version.
    • The latest available boot ROM updates (in Big Sur) for various machines is here: https://eclecticlight.co/2020/11/16/which-firmware-should-your-mac-be-using-version-5/ .
    • On a very old boot ROM (<400.0.0.0) use an empty/formatted original Apple SSD get the lastest ROM. Do a temporary fresh install of MacOS from USB, the install should get you to the latest ROM.
    • After 400.0.0.0 systems with aftermarket SSDs can get boot ROM updates.
    • With the latest boot ROM, any previously installed or old version of MacOS should work (some prefer older OSes)
  2. Install the latest firmware for your SSD, if there is one. Some SSD update utils install firmware using Windows so use a PC or BootCamp. Some SSD updater utils blank the drive, so make a backup of the drive.
  3. Clean the contacts of the SSD, motherboard and the sintech adapter using isopropyl alcohol and a qtip/cotton bud.
  4. Ensure the sintech adapter and SSD are fully seated and centred. Even a slight skew or unseated drive can cause crashes and reboot issues. Touching the contacts during install can also lead to instability.
  5. Ensure there is no corrosion on the contacts of the SSD, sintech adaptor or motherboard. You may need to scrape this off if there is any.
  6. Track the temperature of your SSD using a utility like istat menu. Normal temps vary from drive to drive and work load but e.g. for the Rocket it should be 0c-35c. If temperature gets higher than say ~50c for a sustained time you may need to mitigate the heat by setting the fans to alway on in istat menu, or using a heatsink, copper shims or heat pads.
  7. Post your sleep settings "pmset -g" and most recent kernel .panic file from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. Use pastebin.com and share a link on this thread.
  8. Disable sleep and hibernate (see above for command). Reset sleep to default settings pmset restoredefaults
  9. Try the Kexts (Ssdpmenabler.kext and/or NVMEfix.kext - search the thread for info).
  10. Try a different aftermarket SSD and/or adapter.

Someone has already said somewhere else but I have spent hours reading and researching this thread and now I'm calling out for help. Truthfully, I have only made it as far as step one:
1. Looked up the ROM and it was 476.0.0.0.0

At first I thought the crashing was a rare occurence but now I am using the laptop a little more, the kernel panic / crashing is happening frequently and always around sleep/wake. This thread is absolutely huge, so I have spent most of my time reading it, finding this segment and verifying that this is indeed the problem. As its already happened 3x this evening whilst researching this thread and I have tested the scenario by opening and closing until it crashes, which it eventually does, I am confident this is what the problem and its just about exhausting the steps and finding out what will fix it at this point.

I'm really hoping it's an easy fix and not the SSD. I'm aware that the SSD is overkill but it was a good deal and when I done my initial research on the earlier models (of this SSD) for this upgrade, it seemed like it could only be beneficial. I think I recall reading somewhere that the speeds for my MBA model are prettymuch matching that of what I am getting from the speed tests and I'm not much concerned with blistering speeds as opposed to it being reliable. If it is a case of the SSD being inappropriate, I am able to wipe the SSD and return it by end of January for a more appropriate alternative although, I would like to avoid that hassle.

When I fitted the drive and booted everything up, everything went very well and there were no faults to report. Could that simply infer that I need to re install?

Also, thinking it could just simply be a bad adapter? I see that everyone else vouches for and uses Sintech? Would it be wise to simply just go straight to buying that adapter and swapping it out especially if the Voila.Reve is deemed no good?

If the adapter is deemed reliable, I'll look to clean it if the preceding steps do not work.

As it stands, I am going to move to step 2 and work through that steps; I'll tackle step 3 and 4 should 2 not work, think 5 will be ok since everythings fairly new but will check. Looked at 6 and have provided a screenshot of the SSD temp for the past hour as I write this post and it's sitting atapprox 50, that's without heavy use, so will jump ahead and assess the same with fans on.

This is all fairly new to me but I've made an effort to present the thread with a valid ticket for good root cause analysis as not to waste anyones time but in any case please kindly point anything obvious out me.

Hoping someone can help!

Update:

Completed Step 2 - update the firmware of the SSD under Windows via Boot Camp and when I installed the Crucial Update Software, it showed that everything was up to date.

After doing a little bit more research, I've established that the error code within the Panic File is "IONVMeController.cpp:6090" and that this points toward the SSD being incompatible.

I have also found some other articles, threads and posts which might infer that there is a general problem with using third party SSD's with Monterey as an OS?

What I think I am going to do, because at present I am able, is return the SSD and buy another [Intel SSD 660P 2.0TB M.2 80MM PCIe 3.0 - Figured it's an Intel-CPU based machine so hopeful of a result in that respect] along with the SinTech M.2 NVME adapter, as it's cited as being a SSD that is supposed to work.

Think it's the most pragmatic step and simply for the exclusive fact that I am within my timeframe for returns etc and can discount this as a problem at an early stage. This will also incorporate steps 3 & 4.

I am also conscience that the running temperature are quite high compared to some of the stats I've seen from other users.

After this I can check back on steps 1, 2, 4, 6 & 9.

Still open to any other assistance!

If i've to put my penny, i'll bet that it's the P5 itself is the problem here. The last reliable (yet slow and lack of durability) Crucial SSD for upgrading a mac is the old P1.

660P is not any better in term of speed and durability, but at least it's perfectly compatible.

No issue about 3rd party SSD with Monterey, unless the SSD itself proved to be problematic (some WD, Samsung and Crucial SSDs are the example)

My choice of SSD for price, performance and compatibility is still Kioxia (formerly known as Toshiba) Exceria (now avail in G2 version with higher speed) : https://europe.kioxia.com/en-europe/personal/ssd/exceria-g2.html

one of few SSD options that actualy have DRAM with a budget price range. And with 5 years warranty, you can't get much wrong.

Thanks so much for the reply.

As much as I am trying to work through the problem myself, it's nice to have someone else's view on it but yes, I agree.

In hindsight it was a gambit going for the P5 assuming it would work as flawlessly as the P1 but alas. It was working out as good a deal as any other unit only future proofed should I have decided to repurpose it. The good news is I have already ordered the 660P and will send the P5 back after I have backed everything up and moved it to the new storage unit therefore hopefully making this a straight swap.

Does the Kioxia come in 2TB?

Will report back with my findings anyway to add to this evergrowing thread.. lol

Right, I use Samsung 980s in my clients macs for almost 3 years, no issues.
P1 from crucial were good, p2 were a mix, sometimes working, sometimes not.
I got a p3 as a replacement for a dead p1 on warranty.
Does p3 work with macbooks pro/air 2015/2017?
or i just have to put it in a pc?

Thanks

TY, good to know.

Installed new Intel 660p whilst using the same adapter as before and have migrated everything over from time machine backup.

Tried multiple times to recreate the issue by opening and closing the lid, which set it off with the other storage unit, and so far so good - no issues.

Read/Write speeds are much less, but that doesn't bother me.
Resting temperature is a lot lower too, which can only be a good thing.

Amazing thread though, learnt a lot. Hopefully I never have to come back!

Good to hear.

660p, after all, is using the tried and tested SMI2263 controller which rebranded as intel own. (it use intel custom-developed firmware instead of SMI's generic one)

aside from the lower side of TBW and sustain speed, it should serve you just fine for years to come.

You need "keepsyms=1" set in nvram boot-args to use Lilu, and those value sometimes reset upon update.

Did this in Recovery, and still having the same issue. Ssdpmenabler installs, asks for permission, and reboots fine. Lilu causes kernal panic until I boot to recovery and erase it from terminal.

Long time lurker but I wanted to add one more data point to this ginormous thread.

I had a 2015 MBP that I had planned to upgrade but I ended up selling it instead. I acquired this early-2014 MBA a few months ago and decided it'll be my daily driver until the rumored 15" MBA comes out (fingers-crossed).

With the latest advancements, everything was as easy as can be and thank you all for testing and trying things out.

The deets:
  • 13" MacBookAir6,2 with 256GB SSD
    macOS Big Sur 11.7.2
    Firmware 474.0.0.0.0
  • SK Hynix P31 2TB SSD
  • Sintech adapter
    • From Amazon: Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade MacBook Air(2013-2016 Year) and MacBook PRO(Late 2013-2015 Year) (Black) $12.29
I knew I was likely overpaying for the adapter but I was looking for a trouble-free experience since I wanted to test out the P31 as soon as possible, plus, you know, life. I was slightly worried about the Kapton tape on the adapter since it only covered the connectors "towards the front" and wasn't sure if it should cover more areas or not.

I followed Cmd+Q's detailed RTF file but was able to skip the Boot ROM steps.

I placed the P31 into an external enclosure and formatted it (APFS, GUID Partition Map). Then I grabbed a USB thumb drive and created a Big Sur installer. I opened the MBA and swapped out the 256GB SSD for the P31 + adapter and waited nervously booting into the USB thumb drive. Install went fine and I booted into Big Sur. I tested out sleep and shutting down (is there a specific way to test hibernation?) and it all worked without a problem.

At first, I was a bit disappointed with the P31 speed, or rather lack of speed improvement over the original 256GB SSD. It was not an extensive test, I had just used boot time as my measuring stick and with the 256GB SSD, boot times took around 20 seconds (estimated). The P31 took about 16 seconds (estimated) so it was only slightly faster to me. So I did some research.

It seems the 256 GB SSD gets around 600-700MB/s max for reads and writes. I didn't test, but this is what people are saying.

With the P31, I was getting:
Screen Shot 2023-01-11 at 11.39.59 PM.png

Screen Shot 2023-01-11 at 11.40.15 PM.png

Hmph. Okay. It looks like this is actually awesome speeds when I compared to other benchmark results posted in the thread for 2014-era hardware. It seems that even though PCIe 2.0 x4 can be activated with a NVMe on this MBA model, you won't be able to see the higher 3000MB/s read-write writes. 1500MB/s seems to be the cap for 2014s, you'd have to get the 2015s when x4 was the default interface to see numbers in the 3000s.

Why did the boot time seem slow then? Well, there was a comment that I came across that said in the more recent macOS versions, boot times are much longer (due to APFS?). My boot time experience was when I had my 2015 MBP with pre-APFS macOS and I remember getting to the desktop in under 10 seconds (estimated). I miss that speed. Is there anything I can do to get that boot time again?

Edit: I also noticed SSD temps can start at 41c but spikes up to 53-55c sustained. Is this cause for concern? Should I install a SSD thermal pad?

How up-to-date is the wiki-post on the 1st page?

e.g. Should WD SN570 be still in the "known not to work" list? I can see that there are some satisfied users on this thread for this particular drive.

The Wiki-post could use some updates but it would require a more long-term member to make those edits. I suspect that as time goes on, less and less updates will occur as people get newer machines. The same thing is occurring with the adapters. People are suspecting the short adapters have matured over time and Sintech is no longer the only place with quality adapters.

That being said, I would consider the WD SN570 to be working considering how many reports in the thread saying so, especially since most of them are in 2022.

It's worth pointing out that SN570's write speed slows down to ~500-600 MB/sec (on sequential writes) [1]. But it's max temp is around 20 degrees cooler than the Exceria models [2, 3].

Considering that my almost full mid-2015 SSD can only write around 300 MB/sec I think I won't complain that much about the slow write speed of the WD product (if it's stable enough).

Hi all,

I purchased a Crucial P2 back in March 2021 and then life happened. I now really need to upgrade my SSD in my 2015 MBP but don't want to install it if it's not the TLC version.

I ran Phison nvme flash id2 and this is what it gave me below, but I'm still not sure if this drive is QLC or TLC. I do see QLC listed a few times more than TLC though! 😂

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Guys,

I was directed by a friend to upgrade my 13” MacBook Pro SSD with an OWC one, but searching information about compatibility issues, I found this forum.

First, thank you for your work and passion about the subject. This is an “encyclopedia”.

I’ve read many pages, but this is overwhelming and some information are history. Therefore, I’ve focused on first 10 pages on the subject and the last ones from the beginning of 2022 until now.

My MMP is:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2,6 GHz
Memory: 8 GB
System Firmware Version: 474.0.0.0.0
SMC Version (system): 2.16f68

With last version of BigSur OS

Apple SSD Controller:
Vendor: Apple
Product: SSD Controller
Physical Interconnect: PCI
Link Width: x2
Link Speed: 5.0 GT/s
Description: AHCI Version 1.00 Supported

APPLE SSD SD0128F:
Capacity: 121,33 GB (121.332.826.112 bytes)
Model: APPLE SSD SD0128F
Revision: A223321
Native Command Queuing: Yes
Queue Depth: 32
BSD Name: disk0
Medium Type: Solid State
TRIM Support: Yes
Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)
SMART status: Verified

Free space: 40GB

I understand that OWC and other brands manufacturing replacement NVME SSDs for Mac AHCI SSDs will work PCIe 2.0 x2 and other NVME with an 12+16 pin adapter will work PCIe 2.0 x4.

My actual speeds with the SanDisk AHCI SSD are ~200Mb/s for write and ~400Mb/s for read. A little bit slower than other similar AHCI SSD presented here. Maybe is because of SanDisk and not optimized processes on my MBP. I’ve done only upgrades and no fresh install of the OS.

Upgrading the SSD I hope to increase the speed and the available space of my Mac and prolonging its life. I’m aware that the speeds will be around 1500Mb/s.

Found that FW: 474.0.0.0.0 solved sleep and hibernation issues with the old models, but the issue of power drain during idle it is not solved.

Unfortunately, for my mid 2014 MBP it is not possible to use extension ROM (NVMeFix and ssdPMEnable) to increase the efficiency of the NVME SSD, and I am interested to buy one of the best power efficient and low temperature operating compatible SSD. I mainly work on battery, I use sleep and hibernation functions a lot.

Since, SK P31 - most power efficient SSD, is not available in Romania and in Europe is too expensive and some other brands like Crucial switched to QLC, I had a look to other competitors.

Some 1TB, with DRAM, are still available in Romania:
  • Corsair MP510, WD SN 550 and ADATA SX8200 Pro – seems to consume high power and to have high temps
  • Silicon Power P34A80 – seems to be a little bit efficient than the MP510, SN550 and SX8200
  • Kingston A2000 – read about some stability issues in the topic
  • Kioxia EXCERIA – seems to consume less power, but operates at high temperatures.
I tend to order a Kioxia EXCERIA, but I’m not sure which is more appropriate for my MBP in terms of power efficiency and temperatures Kioxia EXCERIA Plus G2, Kioxia EXCERIA G2 or Kioxia EXCERIA.

What do you recommend? Did I miss something important?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you for suggestion, but all Samsung SDDs demanding more power than other brands listed by me and they work hot. I've avoided last rows from the tables from the firs page.
