Confirming that a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB works in the a 2013 Macbook Air with no Samsung firmware update needed.

Also rocking the Matt Card and have had no hibernation or sleep issues without the need to change any settings!

Thank to everyone that made this possible!

Thanks - this is very useful. So do you have or have you seen this configuration working in a mid 2014 rMBP with OCLP?
I have a mid-2014 rMBP with a WD SN570 running Monterey with OCLP and it runs great. Might be my best Mac experience from over the years. A few glitches here and there, but nothing that's a showstopper.

That's really good to know, thanks!

A-Data has a proprietary set of tools which you can use to check the health of your drive (you can also upgrade firmware and perform other essential functions not available under MacOS)

Other programs like CrystalDiskInfo, etc may also be of interest.

You can use a small program to check your hardware configuration, from here.

But if the drive is now completely unbootable I’d probably RMA it and look for something else..

Hi again!

OK, I finally found the time to install the Adata SSD into my windows desktop and examine the hardware.

My drive has the Silicon Motion SM2262EN controller and Micron 512Gb/die TLC NAND. This is the original configuration Adata used when they first released the drive.

Is this helpful in understanding if my drive has incompatibility with my rMBP 2014 and OCLP?

Should I just forget about it and try the WD SN570?

I do not know.....

either Google extensively to find information from someone who has tried this NVME before or better:

try if you are willing to install this NVME maybe twice or just put it into an external enclosure, measure the Energy Consumption while copying files on it and after having it unmounted to see if Power Save modes are used.

Then install MacOS on that in External ( or intern ) and after booting svereal times look @ Trim Times, but this takes some Time to make a difference with:

Bash:
log show --predicate "processID == 0" | grep spaceman
( takes a while to filter the log )

I was using Adata pro 256GB in my MacBook pro mid 2014 with no problems and with OCLP. It's now in my 2015 Air and working.

Well I've now tested two sintech adapters (long and short) and in both cases my machine is unusable. It's either the laptop or the disk... Of course mine is the 1TB model so maybe there a subtle difference there but its not looking good.

What does your EFI firmware report as? (it should be 478.0.0.0 if you did all of the Big Sur updates).

Otherwise you may want to try updating drive firmware, possibly verifying your MacOS system files to exclude any system software based issues.

Tried disabling TRIM within OC config? (SetApfsTrimTimeout = 0); might be a long shot but it could possibly be of some assistance.

Nice! I've been contemplating trying OCLP and do Sonoma, but I think I'm to nervous about doing it.. This 2015 Air works fine on Monterey and my ADATA been fine for over 3 years. If I had a test machine I would play with that, but this is my daily personal machine. I do wish I had some way of checking what controller and firmware the ADATA has.. I don't have a PC that can take it.

Hello, I have an 11,3 15 inch mid 2014 MBP. I would like to upgrade the SSD. In this very helpful post they say the computer is limited to 2 lanes of SSD. However, in this post - https://apple.stackexchange.com/que...e-ssd-drives-via-the-use-of-a-sintech-adapter they state the the mid 2014 15 inch MBPs can support four lanes. Elsewhere I have read you need to reset the PRAM and then NVMe 4 lanes works. Does anyone here have experience with the mid 2014 15 inch MBP ? have you got 4 lanes after an upgrade. I would like to go to 4TB if possible.

Hi mate, I have a 2014 Macbook Pro with Retina display model (same as you) and I'm looking for upgrading my storage as well. As I'm aware of that 2014 Model of Macbook Pro shows it's PCIe x2 but I found that OWC link you posted earlier states this MacBook Pro can achieve the 1400MB/s speed, so I got a bit confused: Does this model (A1502) support PCIe x4 or it's limited to x2 (as shown in System Information.app)?
Also since you are upgrading your 2014 MBP's SSD as well, could you tell me which brand's SSDs are supported for this Mac? I'm currently looking for the upgrade to 512GB.
Thanks in advance!
Hi, did you try this? Did you get 4 lanes?

Sonoma runs hell of A lot better then what Ventura did. OCLP now been updated 1.0.1 with more support and more. fixes

You can do what I do. I use Windows in Bootcamp for steam but also to check for updates for my NvMe drives

Are you referring to OCLP compatibility?

The issue with Sonoma is apple will be actively updating its structure and any update can potentially break something in OCLP, whereas ventura will only get security updates making it a theoretically safer choice,

Referring to macOS Sonoma running better then Ventura for me.

Mr. Macintosh here talks about how the OCLP updates will be working.
OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.0.0 & 1.0.1 UPDATE!

Thank you. Feel free to ad this provided data to the "confirmed working models".

I double checked and left iStat Menus open, closed everything possible else (incl wifi etc) and looked at it for a while (see screenshot). the 2TB P31 in my 11,1 MBP late 2013 sticks around 0.05 (but never 0.01 - as app Temp Monitor states.), so I guess that's what is the idle. That didn't even change particularly while keeping mail open and using chrome for a meet.
Note: I have not measured without ssdpmenabler I have to say, and since the system seems to be working ok I would not want to touch it.

But: Is there anything I can do to improve this still? (I have only ssdpmenabler installed, but haven't set Lilu or any other NVME KEXT).

(there's also some question regarding the optimal energy settings so the drive can perform exactly as apple's native drive, but I'll open another post)

Thanks fo the script @kvic !
Hey, did you have to update the firmware for the 2 tb version? My 11,3 macbook doesn't seem to recognise it. Hynix's website doesn't provide a firmware update, only for the 1tb and 500gb models, they say that the 2tb verson comes with the latest firmware out of the box. I'm not sure if my nvme adapter is faulty or the drive itself, or what's the problem.

Hello,

I'm not sure how to add this to the first post but for anyone who looks to update their setup in 2023 I confirm that Samsung 980 pro and Crucial P3 (non Plus, haven't tried that one) also work great.

The P3 is faster than the P2 for no noticeably higher power draw, while the 980 pro is fast but heats up quite a bit (the reason I haven't kept it long enough to assess the power consumtion). I'm using SsdPmEnabler with Monterey's Boot Rom on an early 2015 macbook pro.

Still looking for the best combination of speed, power comsumption and reliability so I might try the P3 Plus and P5 Plus at some point but the general rule is that PCIe 4.0 models will have a larger power draw for no extra speed benefit as the macbook's controller can't handle it.

Eh...I used to run VirtualBox and play with Linux a bit but really didn't want to get into Bootcamp/Windows on this machine. Didn't really want to mess with anything like that. Maybe one of these days I'll find one of the faster 2017 Airs and play around some more. Oh well.. it works just fine now. If it ain't broke don't fix it..lol

I only recently stared using bootcamp. As when I'm away we get internet outage and I got bored so bought the Arkham Asylum and city to play on steam lol.

Went from the original 512gb in a mid 2014 MacBook Pro several years ago with the sintech adapter that was recommended in the first post of this thread many years ago up to a 1tb sk Hynix gold p31 1tb which has been working solid from the start just updated to the SK Hynix 2tb now it’s probably the same price I payed for the 1tb flawless switch no issues at all even using OCLP and Sonoma unsupported , this MacBook Pro seems to have lots of life left in it and enough storage to keep up with the 10 years of stuff I’ve been putting on it and the sintech adapter has never had a issue . Thankyou to this thread for the original recommendations. Battery life and everything has been flawless on the SK Hynix still recommend this drive.

Do you have a PC or an external M.2 adapter to test the drive in? (that would determine if the drive itself is the issue, you can also inspect the firmware revision there)

Checked adapter seating, fit? (there are reports of some generic units not making proper contact which could cause the symptoms listed..)

Would you mind checking to see if you get 4 lanes or 2 lanes in About This Mac > System Report >r NVME? Thanks so much. I'm not sure if the mid-2014 mac does 4 lanes or if this is a 2015 mac thing only. Thankyou.

someone has already answered but yes 4 lanes made a big difference to the stock speeds when updating to the NVMe .
